Manicures and Pedicures- the dangers

Recently I saw a report on the dangers of those little nail salons. A doctor said that every week he sees several people who have developed bad infections that they have caught at salons when getting their fingers and toenails done. There really is an ugly side to beauty. Personally I would never go to any of those places. I think they're a waste of money and clearly unhygienic. Have you ever had any trouble with these places?

Precisely why I trim my own nails. I know of someone who had ugly infection on her toes because of pedicure. HIV could also be transmitted in manicures and pedicures.

hi there coffeeshot, im a person who had a manicure and pedicure every two weeks, but i dont have any trouble regarding infections through that procedure, i brought along with me my manicure and pedicure materials and i make sure that they are also clean, and ofcourse i got my own official person who will perform it in the salon, i wont have my manicure if that person is not around cause i trust her only. yeah your right proper hygiene should be practiced, imagine if you get wounded and infected you spend a lot of money for the medication than paying in the salon... its good to choose carefully the person you wanted to have manicure with and most of all the clean paraphernalia...

i would never go.a friend of mine ended up with gangrene of the toe from a pedicure and part of it had to be removed. some of those places, the sterilization is questionable.

My nails are a disgrace, unfortunately. I don´t use these places, but not because I have a problem with their hygiene and so on. It´s just that I don´t spend money on that sort of thing. If I want to do my nails, I´ll do them myself.

I have heard some reports about the nail salons too. I think it really depends on where you go. You have to be careful with the ones that you pick. A good salon with make sure they clean and disinfect their tools. A lot of salons have heating machines that look like little microwaves that heat the tools to kill the germs and clean them.

A girlfriend of mine just recently got a toenail infection after a pedicure, and I have been to one place I saw reusing towels. ICK! What a bummer...I usually do my own but I love to go to a salon as a treat and now I'm a little grossed out by it.

I remember a couple of years ago there was a lot of coverage about this happening to Paula Abdul. Which surprised me, because you think celebrities would go to the best of the best. And maybe she did, and it happened anyway. I have never had any trouble because I don't get manicures or pedicures. I can't afford it. I did have one manicure this past March. It was a present from my sister for my birthday. She took me to the place she usually goes (she CAN afford them), so I felt confident it would be okay since she had been a regular customer and knew the place and the people.

proud to say that my wife is the one who gives me a pedicure and manicure. she does not do this professionally but just a hobby. you know ladies they like to have colored and clean finger and toe nails. so since she is the one doing it for me (and does to her nails as well), i know that it is clean. she also buys nail polish at the mall for her own nails. she also spa my feet every once in a while. i have seen people who was infected with salon and i guess if they are really vain in this but dont know how to do it then might as well bring their own things, plus pick the best person who can do it. hepa B can be transferred and a lot more desease not just infection.

Hey coffeeshot! I'm with you! I have only had my nails done twice in my life and only because they were given to me as "gifts" and I was taken there to have them done! First of all, I hate anyone touching my nails, hands or feet! I have been doing my own nails since I was in high school! I feel alot more comfortable doing them myself and I know that all my equipment is clean and hasn't touched anyone but me!

if the hands are treated too frequently with some of those solutions and stuff they have there, there's a possibility for something untoward may happen..that's why they really need to follow the recommendations on the labels for some of those stuff.. also, hygiene plays a very big role in those type of salons. and the manicurist needs to be well trained, not one of those 'i've learnt the skills on my own' sort of individual. so far, i've never had any trouble yet with my occasional manicure & pedicure

I don't go to salons just to have pedicure or manicure. Because I think they are not sterilizing their equipments or instruments in doing that. I am afraid that my toe or finger nails will be murdered too and worst is to be infected. That's why I tried to learn to do it on my own so that aside from saving money I can be sure that I won't get hurt.

No, where I live most of the salons are really clean and nice, so I go to them. But I would not go to a very dirty or strange looking one, because you never know! But if I know the place is good, and have been there before, I really do not see a problem with it. I never had any problems with these things!
