eating un-shelled Crabs with a fork & knife..

i loooove eating crabs. cracking it open with my fingers and licking it clean afterwards. especially if it's a nice sweat & sour type, or even a lightly spicy one.. yummy! but one of the places i went to this week (it was a new place) offered a fork and knife to me for eating the un-shelled crab. now how the heck am i supposed to use a fork & knife for this? i've always been 'hands-on' when eating crabs, especially the ones where i have to de-shell it myself. and i don't mind using my fingers at all when eating (provided that there's a sink to wash my hands in before i eat and afterwards when i'm done eating).. so i was just sitting there and stared at the waiter when he placed the utensils on the table.. 'what am i supposed to do with this?' i asked him. 'for you to use to eat sir' the fellow said. 'please have a seat and show me how i can do that with what i ordered' was my reply. he had a blank look, and it took 2 minutes for him to process it before it finally registered in him.. 'erm, you can just leave it there just in case you may need it sir'..he said before leaving hurriedly. oh well..back to my question. is there really a way to eat un-shelled crabs with a fork & knife? if there is, please do enlighten me. because i have never ever used utensils when eating crabs before..i let my fingers do the work, with a little mallet or nut cracker on standby for the hardy shells

Anything I eat Mario can't look like what it is therefore I eat crab, loveit but not when in shell, eat fish butnot if I can see the eyes, love prawns but not crevettes. There is no way though you could possibly eat crab like you have meantion with a knif eand fork, the same as a chicken leg, you have to pick yp and eat eh! Enjoy but leave utensils firmly on the table cloth and use handbowl after lol. Huggles. Ellie :D

Most restaurants here do in fact give a hanbowl or a hot wet cloth orhand wipes with foods like this or ribs or something

those little things are so handy... at the very least is that the restaurant has easy access to a sink or wash basin where we can wash our hands

hi Ellie hmmm...i understand that. one of my mum's friends also couldn't eat something if it looks like what it is before cooked.. so if it's going to be one of those dishes where she needs it carved or cut up for her, there's always someone to do it and that handbowl is a good idea too..restaurants doing up dishes that need to be eaten with our hands should prepare that in advance

I just can't think of how to eat crabs with a fork and a knife. The best place I know to eat crabs is at home because all my fingers would be doing the work. Nothing beats eating crabs using your fingers.

just make sure that you don't just use emoticons only when responding to discussions, because i think i saw somewhere that we can't earn that way.. unless earning was the least of your worries and you just wanted to poke fun at a friend here if that's the way, then emote away....

mario_stevens, Don't worry, this is not another dissection lesson where you need to spread out your subject (cooked) on the table for some cross examination. So, just use your hands here wherever necessary because you are not getting anywhere with merely the fork and knife only. The knife is just there to help with certain cutting and prying while the fork is supposed to help you scoop the meat and dip into your favorite dips - it is all about making you look as decent and proper - if you know what I mean. Some people are just into their own world of customs and cultures, if we are the host here - I can see that we will be getting a private room with plenty of paper napkins! P.S. Not forgetting that mallet ....to get "messy" and for good reasons too!!

hi skysuccess i so prefer to use my hands & fingers for those type of dishes...i just haven't discovered the fine art of eating crabs with utensils. i think that waiter understood what my stare meant, but couldn't say much about the situation hehe...and that mallet will always come in handy when we need to make a mess

I was once invited to my boss's house for lunch and the wife told me that they had crabs as the main dish. I got nervous as when I attack crabs my table manners fly out of the window and so I was worried how I would do that there. But I was so relieved when the bearer placed a huge plate full of the Russian Crab Salad!!

Thank God they were not British but Swiss as you know British are so particular about which fork should be used first, etc. Yes. I do remember enjoying that meal with relief!!

there's no way to eat that with fork and knife....are you sure that the waiter is awake when he told you what to do with the fork?

hehe...he may have been sleep walking or something but really...i tried to actually use the fork and knife and i ended up creating more of a mess than if i just used my hands

First you use your hands to break the shell then you use your fork and knife to scoop out the meat like a decent human you are'nt.... :D

well you can kindof just pop it out with your knife, but here's a better solution for you. When ordering from a Japanese restaurant, order the softshell crab, and you can eat the whole thing. and its really good too. Its kindof crunchy and they make sushi out of it usually, but if you don't like sushi you can just get the crab and not have to deal with the other stuff.

hiya alexorejana mmm....i like those softshell crab too.. but sometimes their a bit pricey, and some styles of cooking suits the hardshell ones a bit better..yum yum.. maybe i'd go for softshell crabs next weekend
