Removing Scratches With Pencil Eraser / Rubber

My sister has a laptop with an almost 2 inch long scratch on the LCD screen. After reading several dozen websites on tips to remove scratches on screens, I came across the mention of a pencil eraser. I was asking myself how could this possible work but I gave it a try and it works! The laptop LCD screen looks like new, the scratch has completely vanished. Anyone know why this is? Why does this method work? What is going on? Thanks
