Why police officers have other laws than ordinary people?

They think because they are the cops they can do any thing and get by with it as many people turn thier head!

There is, inevitably, corruption in any large organisation, including the police. It is very true that the police do often use their office to give themselves some advantage.

Herein the US our police are as a rule very courteous and very polite.If you do have problems with one who is rude or not behaving properly you get his badge number and phone the police department. they will discipline the officer as they want rapport with the public not hatred. I really think in all fifty states we have very few bad police officers, most are helpful and courteous.In the few instances I have needed their help I have always been treated very well indeed. I have had several police officers even show me how to find something when I was lost in a strange city. We , my sister and I were traveling and had to change bus lines in D encer to a Greyhound bus and could not find the station. it turned out it was a block from the other bus line but you had to walk around a aquare of blocks to 'get to it. So they are not all bad here in America.

i understand what you mean. some police officers thinks that they are the law, so they think that they can make their own law for they feel that they have power to do it. they do not understand that they are not the law, they are the enforcer. some people does not understand that they work for us to protect us and not to bully us. the problem always is how to fight this or how to solve this. you can not just solve this alone because the system itself is the one with problems. if you complain you put your own life in jeopardy for they will hunt you or bully you more. an actor here in our country even told that news once that he doesnt know who to trust already for the police is not doing anything when you ask fr help.

i have seen 90% police officials/staff are corrupt ,what you expect them from these officers ,they tend to leave terrorist,rapist,looters ,robbers ,smugglers after taking good amount of money ,many officers are invoved in these type of crime ,they get commision ,rules are not made for them ,a civilised person do not want to meet these officers,they do not know how to behave ,they only know how to earn money?

I believe this problem is everywhere. Police officer often break the law because they feel they have that type of power. I suppose rallies and congress can help make changes, however it is a tough battle as from I was told by a friend who was a police woman, they are not allowed to go against one another no matter what. My friend is Hispanic, and although she did not look Hispanic many of her fellow offers forgot about that. One day she got fed up with the brutality of her fellow offers mistreating civilians because they were Hispanics and she made a report to her Chief commander well, that got her fired and complete wiped out as she did not even get benefits thereafter. Even after serving 15 years with them. So to go against the police is a difficult but I suppose not impossible and I imagine it takes a very long time.

This is rampant where I live…in fact, the police breaking the law themselves is a common occurrence all over India. One reason for this I think is that people are generally scared of police harassment, secondly most people don’t know the laws properly so they are scared of confronting a police man. Thirdly, I think policemen always have ready excuses to offer… they are always on ‘duty’ so nobody questions them. Minor offences like illegal parking and so on are overlooked but serious offences like encounter killings, or third-degree torture behind bars…etc are picked up by the media and in many cases, the guilty policemen are punished or suspended.

unfortunately police officers tends to abuse their authority..that's why a lot of people don't trust the majority of them..i wasn't able to encounter a nice police officer myself..all that i was able to communicate with are arrogant and rude..they have a lot of "air" in their heads..but still i have hope that they will be controlled someday specially since we just got a new president and he seems to be doing his best to control abusive government people..

This problem is being fought in our country through the Press and the fact that most people have phone that take pictures, this limits how many of these things can take place in secret. Police have a terrible job, everyday their lives are on the line and so many times they watch someone they know is guilty walk away from court a free man because the evidence wasn't quite right or another small thing happened. After years of this police tend to push the lines on laws to arrest people they feel are guilty and they also begin to feel that they should punish the offenders because if they go to court it will just get thrown out. Frustration is the cause of much police abuse. But we need to keep the Press on top of these problems to control them.

I guess it is something that occurs in a lot of countries. Our police force here in Australia used have some corrupt officers from the seventies right up until the nineties but it has been apparently ‘cleaned up’ nowadays and the public is advised to report any police officer seen to be doing the inappropriate thing. I hope it is all up and above board now...

Though it doesn't seem to be nearly the problem here as you've described it in your area, I do observe that there are police officers that do breech the law. Most of what I will see them doing that isn't right is that they will be speeding. This isn't just dangerous for the police officers, but it is also dangerous for the citizens because it only takes a moment's lapse in judgement to cause an accident that will possibly kill someone. That said, I think that the reason that police officers break the law is because they believe that they are above the law.

Police officers tend to be given a bit more authority well police the people so they do not get too unruly. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is that police officers are only human. They see the extended boundaries that they might be given to do their job and interpret them in a way that causes a great deal of them abusing said power. There is a reason that police are feared by many. They tend to take their jobs a bit too far at times. They think that they are the law and thus not subjected to it. I think that there are times where police officers are allowed a bit too much and can get away with things that the normal population would not be able to get away with, with no consequences. It is extremely unfair but that's one of those unfortunate things in life. That is why police corruption seems to be so prominent. Give someone an inch and they'll take a foot.

Hi ET!. Its seem we have problem here. Police institution has lost respect from its citizen because we believe they can not solve our problem. For example if we had buglar come to our house, we will report it to police station but they will not do anything like checking the house or looking for strange finger print. I thing the police today not really serving and protect us and they seem have they own agenda entering the force.

The feeling of being above to everyone is what they are enjoying. They felt they can do anything and do any loop hole reasons for them to get away with it. I guess having a community website for forums, picture and video posting supported by media and Non-Government Organizations will help. Then maybe link this website to government websites.

ET28LV, Like good people and bad people around and amongst us, it will be the same in the police force where there will be good cops and bad cops. And it is usually the latter that will spoil the show and eventually bring about controversial issues into a well established legal system and mechanism. There's always a saying that no one is above the law where you just have to believe it and that these errant cops will eventually meet their fate one day. However, I do not think it will be right for one to complain about how the police would go about his/her duties. I think there are legitimate reasons when police do not seem to follow protocols when they answer or handle emergencies. There are times in the course of carrying out their duties - they literally do not have time to consider if they had parked their vehicle illegally. On another note about not turning on the siren, some situations does warrant that especially when a crime is in progress, potential extreme violence cases, hostage situations or some other critical situations where sirens can trigger unnecessary and uncontrollable panics that will endanger everyone at the crime scene. I hope you will not be too critical with certain situational calls and that you would not be discouraged or loose faith of your local law enforcements when you see certain negative aspects. But, seek to understand and learn the necessary measures to take when you see an actual abuse or miscarriage of justice.

I think in every country you have the good and the bad in police. Here in Australia we have just had a show on our very own corrupt police in N.S.W. called Underbelly The Golden Mile which took place in Sydney's Kings cross area from 1988 -1999.It was amazing what went on with corruption here.I also now work with an under cover police man who left the force because of all the corruption in that time. So I guess that police do have laws for themselves.

I think that all places suffer to some extent the law enforcement taking unfair advantage of their positions. There are procedures put in place here in which a person can file a complaint and have an officer investigated. That is not to say anything will be done about it but sometimes there is.

That's awful. Maybe they're too tired of following the rules that's why they made their own. Here in my country, there are corrupt police officers as well but there are also those that you can trust.

Actually police officers are not a ordinary person. They got salary to help people what ordinary people don't get.But some police officers don't do there responsibility its there bad quality. answer of your question: 1. There is so many sectors for help people so when we don't get help from police then we should contact with different sector. 2.. Yes in my area also the same problem. 3. And some police officers violate guidelines as they are not good human being. Have a good time!

I have a comment on that number 3 questions, It seems like we all do share same problems with this one and I was thinking if we could use this against those police officer who tried to arrest civilians in violating a laws same as this police officer violated. In some case's I know that Police Officer as long as they are on duty they this exception to this rule, meaning their are not violating the rules but they are still doing their SOP as long as it involves a criminals or for Public safety and Public work Purposes. Example a police officer can park anywhere as long as he is a business to do with that certain place and it involves his job.
