What Was Your Favorite Childhood Book?

Hi, Was just wondering if other people like myself had a favorite book in childhood that was never to be forgotten as years, sometimes many years, passed. My favorite book of all times as a child was Stuart Little (it was a book long long before they ever made a movie about it). I remember being beyond fascinated with that tiny mouse who was so into adventure but so well loved by his family. When I was a small child I went to a rural school that had some older books in a room as a library, not a lot, but they had some good books. I read Stuart Little so many times that eventually the part-time librarian told me to quit checking it out. I guess so others could read it as well since it was a tiny library. Eventually, once I was grown and working, I bought my own copy and still have it today, and I still love that book even after all these years. How about you? Did you have a favorite book during your childhood. If so, what was the title?

I loved Heidi, a wonderful book that I read more than ten times. Other than that, it was the Hardy Boys series that interested me--no Nancy Drew for me, way too tame and not enough action! Heidi's story intrigued me, the way everything was out of her control and yet she made the best of it and turned everything to her advantage for a happy outcome.

Funny, I loved Hardy Boys series too as a girl. I never did read the Nancy Drew series, but I loved the Hardy Boys. And Heidi, just exactly for the reasons you stated. Also a great book.

yep.... mine is the little prince. i read it more than a decade ago. it was a borrowed book. i loved it so much. about 5 years later, when i saw the book in the local bookstore, i bought myself a copy of it. and read it again and again. it's not exactly a kid's book, because in a much more deeper sense, the lessons embedded in the story are for adults. but kids and adult alike can relate to it.

You know, that's a really good point. I think a lot of popular kids' books have a message in them for both adults and kids alike. Maybe that's why we can relate to a kids' book no matter how many years pass.

I actually never read Stuart Little, though I heard of it. My favorite was The Wizard of Oz. I eventually collected all the OZ books that L. Frank Baum wrote and many of the others written by other people.

Yea, I love the Wizard of Oz, although I'll have to admit I never read it as a child, but did read it as an adult. It's great and I love it, although I don't think I've read any of his other books. I just got through putting a long post on a new blog I've started about books about how the book The Wizard of Oz came to be (he originally self-published that with the illustrator and they shared the copyright at first, but it was published to critical acclaim and a lot of financial success since the author had already self-published 2 other kids' books before this one...but nothing to do with OZ). I also put at the bottom of that same post how you might recognize a first edition of this book (worth a whole lot of money, but really rare to find one). I'm not sure about mylot's rules, but since I rarely see people putting their web addresses or blog addresses in posts here I'm guessing that's probably against the rules and I've yet to figure out how to post the blog address on my profile page here (technology is not my strong point by any means). If you want to read that post about Wizard of Oz pm me and I'll give you the address. It's on my facebook page as well.

Oh, thanks so much. Sorry to be late in responding, just haven't been on site and haven't had time to work much on blog with several things that came up. Thanks for the info. That's a big help.

Hi, I'm with you. In school the teachers would always read us Bible stories, which were interesting. However, I always liked fairy tales better too. I used to read the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and it's only as an adult that I realized how really grim they were. They had a lot of gruesome details in them, but no matter I still loved them as a kid.

i rad a lot of disney books when i was little. when i was a kid, i even asked my mom why people always give me books instead of toys. back then, even if i did love books, i still would have loved to receive toys. my mom said maybe it's because she also loved to read. that's why my godmothers (who are her friends) would give me books, because they assume that i'll turn out like her.

Yea, books are great but when you're a little kid getting toys is also great sometimes too. Still, sounds like it instilled a love of reading for you.

I had forgotten about Shel Silversten but you're right, he's great. I remember reading his Where the Sidewalk Ends years ago to one of my nieces and he's one of her favorite authors as well. Thanks for your response.

When I was a kid I absolutely loved the whole Chronicles of Narnia series. That's one of those things that I never grew out of... I'm still as much of a Narnia freak today as I was back then! Another book that I read in my childhood and still love the story today is "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnette.

Me too. I'm a big time Narnia freak. I didn't even know about those when I was a child. I read them, though, a couple of years back as an adult, loved them, and I still absolutely love them today. I remember seeing the movie "The Secret Garden" but haven't yet read the book. Since books are almost always better then the movies, especially when it's classic like this title, I need to remember to put reading that particular book on my "to-do someday" list.

I think the best stories are the ones that can be enjoyed no matter how old or young you are. Narnia is one of those for me. I've seen two movie adaptations... neither of which I particularly liked. I think there's another one in black and white that I haven't seen. Anyway, it's a great book and I do recommend that you put it on your to-read list.

Funny, I was just thinking about those books this morning. They did have good stories and they got a lot of kids to start reading when those came out. Thanks for your response.

Yes. I started to love reading when I was a child. Even when I was young, I was already a bookworm. My favorite book when I was a child was Archie Comics and Sweet Valley. I have a collection of these books. I also read Nancy Drew a lot but I don't consider that a favorite.

Hi, I also loved the Archie comics. I've never read the Sweet Valley books but they're a big favorite with the younger people now in my family. Thanks for your response.

windchime, I grew up with comics. But if there is a book that I love the children to read, it is the Little Match Girl.

Yes, I loved the old comics as well. I remember reading the Little Match Girl once when I was younger I think. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was a really good book.

I read lots of Nancy Drew books, some Hardy boys books and most of the Little House on the Prairie books. I admit that I also read many of the VC Andrews books. I was addicted to them.

Hi, Yea, I read the first V.C. Andrews book and after that I read a couple more. I just ran out of time but I thought they were pretty good books actually. Thanks for your response.

Mine were Nancy Drew, Famous Five, Noddy and all fairy tales. I loved reading and all these were available in my school library. I still remember reading Noddy's adventures. Those are happy memories. And I still read them:) sometimes. And I am happy to find this trait in my kid too!

Yea, I still read them too even after all this time. I love kids' books. And, like you, I love to see kids today read.
