Music, philosophy, art, writing and drama - what would you choose?

Tonight I have been looking at different schools, and I found a website about a school where you could choose between 5 lines: Music, philosophy, art, writing and drama and it made me wonder what line I would choose if I went to that school. I love art, writing and music, and I would love to learn more about those things. On the other hand drama would be more of a challenge, because I am an absolute beginner, and I like to learn new things. I know a bit about philosophy, and I like that as well.
If you had to choose between music, philosophy, art, writing and drama what would prefer to study? Why? Which subject would you find the hardest?
Do you prefer to learn more about a subject that you love (and where you are already quite experienced)? Or do you prefer to learn new things and do things that you have never tried before?

for me as it would be almost impossible to choose as all these things would interest me., but would go with art as that would encompass more of what i am doing right now and learning more about a skill i am working on would make me better at it hope fully.
Philosophy, would be the close second and depending on what the art stream offered could take first place,
then writing as i already do, and same as the art always could to improve upon your skills
drama as never had that much interest in being on the stage, rather interested in making the stange scenery and costumes
then music not because i love it any less, but am able to listen to it and used to play the violin but would love to have a go with saxaphone, as for singing ., you really don't need to hear that kind of thing it could put some one off music for life..!!!
are you a usa resident or uk as this school sounds really interesting ?
best wishes

No, I am from Denmark, and it is a Danish school that I am writing about
You sound a lot like me. I am also interested in every subject, and it would be really hard for me to choose only one subject. I love art and writing. I paint, draw and write poems and short stories, and I would like to learn new things and improve my skills. What do you write and what kind of art do you do?
I love music as well. You used to play the violin that is interesting, I would like to learn that. I play the piano, and when I was younger I played keyboard in a band.

hi porcospino
i think you are much younger than I.. :)
but appreciate your interest..
I write rhyming poetry, about what i am inspired or feeling at the time., which i guess some of which could be used for song lyrics... and have written a few short stories too for children...
as a younger person many years ago in my country uk, it wasnt seen as a worthwhile thing to be involved in creative things, so i spent some time in the armed forces, and havehad three children and a lot of life.,
but am just begining on my own again as children grown up, and getting back to exploring the creative life in me, that has been put on hold for most ofmy life.. the reason i asked about the schools was because i think young children should be given the opportunity to be creative more in this country so as to be able to express themselves in positve and all kinds of ways.
I am working on starting a collection for my first exhibition, which is not organised yet as have to do the work first !!!
i paint in acrylics as find them very versatile, and can be made up to the consistency of oils or light as watercolours.. my main love is textiles... but all these things combine well... just happy to create....
recent events seem to be opening up more possiblities, and am not fully decided where or what i am going to focus on.. but for now am happy exploring and touching all that interests me to i get that.. oh yeah this makes me smile more than others. which i have to say is difficult, cos they all do.. what ever i am doing painting or sewing or writing.....
am just off to the library to pick up some books on philosophy i hope., so am still studying myself...
i am going to do a selection of pictures on some of the songs i like as when i listen to them get images... of how they would look on canvass... so lots to do and not much time to do it..
if i where in your position, of choosing for courses is look at what want o do in long term.. like if an artist then obviously choose that path, because that does not stop the writing or the music playing.. if proffessional musician does a qualification make a better payed and respected job and then follow that as the painting and the writing wont stop.. that kind of thing... perhaps you wish to teach then philosophy would be a good choice, as the study of that would bring greater understandings which would improve writing and expressing art and wouldnt stop the music....
i think the choices depend on what you want at the end of the study ...
glad to have chatted and glad you raised this discussion
good luck with your choices and with all your creative ideas
best wishes

Why can't you do it all?
I take great pleasure honing my skills and sharing them with others. Additionally, I become even more satisfied when I learn new/different techniques on specific subjects.
As far as being an absolute beginner on certain things, GO for it. You have a fantastic appreciation for a subject you know nothing about and that respect and appreciation only grows with time, whether or not you continue to pursue aspects of that subject.
I love music, but cannot sing well (or at all, to be honest), but I do like to play instruments. I love art, but cannot draw hands, although I'm great at painting houses. I love to write, but not poetry. I get it, but I just don't like it. I can appreciate others who do moreso because they are far better at conveyance. I love theater. Musicals specifically. That combines several elements here.
Try everything you can at least once.

"Try everything you can at least once" I like that sentence It is also the way I see it. It is nice to become better at the things that I am already interested in, but I also love trying new things and I love getting many different kinds of experiences. The school I was reading about only allows us to choose one line/one subject, but I would prefer to try 2 different subjects or maybe 3 different subjects in order to explore many new things. Unfortuneately that is not possible at that school (unless I sign up a second time, and that would be too expensive)

Try this. See if any of the classes in other sectors can be used as "electives". This way it may be possible to at least get your feet wet in those pools.
Whatever you do, though, make sure that school of your choice is accredited so that the coursework can transfer to another school if it turns out you don't really like that one.
I'm very surprised that one school doesn't allow you to explore other areas. It's not like they are Juilliard... which, btw, is www.juilliard.com.

I also think that is a tough choice. Actually I am interested in every single subject that they offer so it is hard for me to choose only one I share your interest in writing and art. Recently I have spent most of my time on art, but in the future I want to write again.

Art
I'm actually in school right now for textile studies. When I graduate I will be a textile artist. We take mandatory drawing classes, which I don't like as well as classes in sewing, knitting, print and dye, weaving and design studies. The only downfall to the course I'm doing is that we do not learn painting or pottery. I feel that both these mediums are very important to art and that it is a shame that we will not be learning them. We did a workshop in basket weaving... I think a workshop in pottery would be beneficial, especially since it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, form of art. I'm very partial to knitting and am chosing that as well as surface embellishment as my majors.
I have always loved music and have always wanted to sing but am too shy to sing in public. At age 24 it is probably too late to start taking voice lessons. I have always wanted to be able to play an instrument as well. I do own a 7 button accordion, but I am not very good at it.

Your school sounds interesting. I like drawing and painting, but I have never learned anything about pottery. I also like knitting and weaving and I used to work in a weavery for a short while. Good luck with your studies I share your interest in music, and I have played the piano and the keyboard.

may i ask if you are a resident of the uk or usa., because this is a subject of passing along crafts of all things on to the next generation, and my area of love is also textiles and the embellishments etc...and well would like to see more schools around on these kind of things at earlier ages, so the creativity is accepted as normal part of the spectrum of life.also started a few disscussion on this subject and would like to hear your views if you have the time
best wishes

Writing has always been my passion. I would have to choose writing first. Music is important in my life too., Music would have to be my second choice. Philosophy would probably be the most difficult. It is a subject some are more unfanilar with. I was never really good at art. Art would be left far out of the picture for me. Drama is a subject i would also enjoy. First an foremost, would come my joy of writing.

Writing is also my passion I started writing more than 20 years ago and I still enjoy it a lot. I also love music, right now I only listen to other people's music, but in the past I have played music myself and I also like to write songs.

I don't know AR Rahman, but I would like to listen to his music. I also love music. I am an average singer, I don't think that I would become a famous singer if I tried, but I enjoy singing and playing the piano. I have have also played the keyboard in the past. It is nice to hear that your have kept the paintings from your childhood. I haven't got any of my old paintings, but I have a collection of paintings and drawings that I have made as an adult.

I studied drama as a young man and was a professional actor. I'm a singer-songwriter-musician, but there's so much more to know. I'm also a writer, and would love to develop as such. Art as in painting I'd not be interested in, I can't say why, but as much as I love great painting, it's not something I've ever wanted to be creative in. Philosophy is also something I'd avoid because Ive thought a lot about things and have reached the conclusions I want to and don't want to change; and being challenged could throw me badly off kilter and cause me to despair. So, it's down to writing and music. I'd say writing. Music...next year...:o)

Hi P,
I think I will go for the Philosophy. I’ve had lots of exposure to drama, music, arts and writing. So for a change maybe I can try the one not so familiar with me for a change and great challenge.

I agree, it would be a challenge to try something that we are not familiar with. I like the idea of doing something totally different for a change, and it is one of my goals to try many different things and challenge myself.

Art is likely to be an easier task if you can find good sources of inspiration but writting should stay at the end of the line if we're talking about quality writting. Music is one for the talented ones, for me It's on second place because I'm a good listener and my faith has brought me to know a great number of musicians. Drama is not for me at this point. Maybe later in my life, and philosophy is great but it has a pity ending of most of the philosophers so it will not be my choice. Art wins here.

I prefer entering music school cause that's I want the most. And also I play the guitar and some of piano. But I suggest you go for things you want. because I believe if you don't really like what you are doing, you end up regretting. Cause you're wasting your time in things like you dont want. But if you are willing to learn more about other things, so go for it. Just follow your heart. Go for the things you like most. There's no harm in trying. Have fun with it.

I also like music a lot. I played the piano when I was younger and I used to play keyboard in a band. I would love to learn to play the guitar. Have you been playing for many years?
You are right, I might regret it if I don't choose the things that I like. On the other hand the thought of trying something totally different also attract me. I might not like the it, but at least I know that I tried.

There are so interesting way, I love music and arts. If you ask my advice I would choose music and arts. Drama I think is intersting, but I only like and enjoying my self show the drama not playing the drama. Writing is my hobbies, so that is usually enjoying me, but I am a free style writer. I don't like any standart rule when writing. So the subject would you find the hardest is what you very dont like.. the choose is yours, but I suggest music and arts.. :)

As for me I will choose writing. I have passion for creativity and i am very good at that. I can just pick any topic and write on it. However, I wouldn't say a subject is hard because I like improving and updating myself on new things.

I like your attitude. I also think that it is great to learn new things. If it is a subject that we have never tried before it might be a real challenge, but I still find it interesting to try new things and get new kinds of experiences.
Writing is an interesting subject. I started writing more than 20 years ago, but I still love it. What kind of things do you write?

1. Writing
2. Drama or acting
3. Music
4. Philosophy
5. Art
I love the arts and people in the U.S. really need to be more supportive of the arts.

At first thinking I would choose Music and Writing because I like them both. When I write, I often play some music, too. But in the end, I guess I would choose for either drama or art, totally a new subject where I could get interested in. I don't like philosophy, so I would not choose it. For me philosophy is a believe of how we should live our life, so I would not learn nor adopt someone's else philosophy.

I would probably either writing, art, or philosophy. I already know some art and writing which I really enjoy, as for philosphy I think would be the hardest but most interesting. Depending on my mood and the subject sometimes I would learn new things or learn more about things I already know. :)

I'll go for Arts. It's what I wanted since I was a child, unfortunately taking art classes requires a lot of money (which I don't have).
So to be realistic, maybe I'll choose writing instead ^^ So I can improve my writing skills and make a lot more sense on what I write (especially here on MyLot).
Happy "myLotting" guys (and girls)!!!
