I dont think he should have any problem. I used to eat tooth poaste as a kid and never got any side effects. I know your kid is small he will stop once he realises that its wrong to eat tooth paste. You can just let him know that there are side effects in eating toothpaste and he will sto it.

hi jotomy. I'm not yet a parent but I understand your situation. You're luckier that my parents when I was still a toddler because I used to swallow not just toothpaste but BABY POWDERS. Yes, that's true. So they provided me milk powders instead. I think you must get those stuffs out oh his sight and when he look for it, give him edible pastes that maybe look like tooth paste and let him eat those.

But it is true mavhequijada we have to change the products and give them otherwise it may lead to serious health problems. Nice response. Have a good day.

My 3 year old daughter was doing that till just recently but only when cleaning her teeth...she has just in the past week started spitting it out & also rinsing her mouth out...I couldn't do anything to stop her but only to tell her that it's better to spit the toothpaste out. Good luck.

My daughter was the same at your son's age & apparently I was too...I don't think it can do much harm besides giving a stomach ache.

I am no expert but I would imagine it would not be too toxic as it is used to brush the teeth. Is your child using kid’s toothpaste? I would imagine that would be far safer. I would make the toothpaste less accessible and consult your doctor about what your little boy has been doing and don’t worry, I think it is unlikely he has done himself any harm although I would not be inclined to encourage it.

In my opinion, it is natural that your son will swallow a bit of toothpaste while he is brushing his teeth. But to actually be eating toothpaste like it is candy definitely isn't right. I don't know what would cause him to do this, but I've heard about people eating weird things because they have mineral deficiencies. So, you might want to have him checked by a doctor to see if there are any deficiencies that he has.

Hi dorannmwin, i hope so dorannmwin, mineral deficiencies also one of cause for this habbit. Yeah y'day i took him to doctor and he suggested me to give him children toothpaste. When i said the problem to him he said laughed and said its common to the children, but it is safe to give children herbal or children paste. Thanks for your response. Have a wonderful day.

I think you should take him to see a doctor. We all know the taste of toothpaste is not good to eat, maybe your son has a pica. It's better to correct him when he is young.

Put the toothpaste away where he cannot get it. You can also buy either a kind that does not taste so good, or you can get a kind with no fluoride so it will not be as harmful

I don't really think it will harm him. I had a toothpaste that I really liked and when I wanted my mouth to feel fresh I would get a small amount on my finger and eat it. I guess it was used in place of a mint if I remember correctly. Like something you would pop in your mouth to have a new sensation and taste in your mouth. It never hurt me. I'd say look it up or ask the pharmacist or doctor to see what they say if you are truly concerned after this discussion.

hi jotomy I am like you as I am concerned that the stuff in toothpaste cannot be edible so take him in to see his doctor for a checkup and have the doctor explain to your son why eating toothpaste could make him ill. coming from a doctor it might scare him into stopping the habit.

If he uses children's toothpaste there won't be a problem, but try to put it away after he has used it. If it will make you feel better, take him to a doctor and ask what should be done. TATA.

You can start by putting the toothpaste out of his reach first. He may have a liking for minty and soft type of foods so you can probably offer him foods he might like. You can also talk to him and explain to him what would happen to him if he continues to eat toothpaste. You know what, I have a cousin before, when we were still small, he likes to gobble on laundry soap and hot chili peppers but eventually he got rid of that habit especially when he found out, he does not like the taste anymore. So give your son some time to think and explain along the way. Let him have plenty of foods that he can gobble on so he will forget about the toothpaste thing. Good luck!

Hi charmed007, yes i do that, i will put that toothpaste some where. I usually will be telling him the side effects of the toothpaste if he consumes but i don't know he likes that taste, i will try to buy some mint chocolates and give, i think that will be better. Nice response. thanks, have a wonderful day.

Hi jotomy It's been a long time since my kids were little, but I highly doubt there is anything in toothpaste that would hurt a child. If there were, it would be taken off the shelves. I do believe, however, that there is a toothpast specially for kids that is formulated just for this situation. It will not hasrm in any way. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. He will stop on his own. If it would make you feel better, make sure you watch him brush, and put the toothpaste up where he can't reach it at any other time.
