Hello everyone! I am currently trying to get healthy, and so I have decided to work out in the mornings. However, I don't know whether I should have breakfast before or after my workout. Is it ok for me to have something light before my workout, like an apple?

I also used to have this dilemma. I tried not eating before an hour-long workout. In the middle of my jogging, I almost fainted because of lack of sugar. I got dizzy. Then I tried eating before my workout. My tummy ached the whole time I was jogging since I was still a bit full. So now, I just drink a glass of milk or eat a medium-sized banana 30 minutes before a workout. Then I eat 2 slices of bread 30 minutes after a workout.

That sounds like a good idea. The first time I worked out on an empty stomach, I felt very dizzy after getting off the tread mill. Now I have cereal about an hour before my workout and then have lunch afterwards.

i would suggest that you workout first before having your breakfast to avoid indigestion, however if you want to eat breakfast first then you should allow 1 hour at least before working out.

i wasn't sure on this so i researched it on different sites, some say yes some say no. what i do is everyday i get up i drink a glass of water as soon as i get up to get my metabolism cranking then eat 2 scrambled eggs and either a tomato or some fruit then i walk 2 miles. i figure the walking burns off the calories from the eggs and fruit so im even. an apple is only 100 or so calories and a brisk workout or power walk will surely burn that off but i think you should eat something lite especially in the morning. i used to go to the gym and work out lifting for a few hours and when i was done i was starving and go home and eat a steak and calorie laden food to get the hunger away now i just walk and when im done i dont feel like eating, and if later on i feel hungry i take a quick walk around the block.

It really depends on your workout because you do really need some energy after a whole night without food, but it is also difficult to workout on a full stomach. Try not to work out too hard in the mornings as your body may not be used to it, as it's only just woken up, it's functioning will be in a slow relaxed mode, so do lots of warming up and not too much vigorous exercise in case you 'shock' your body. It's useful to eat something light an hour ot two before your workout, like apples and fruit as you mentioned, some salad. After exercising, make sure you drink plenty of fluids and also eat something to replenish your fuel and nutrient levels. Hope this helps. :)

That is exactly what I plan to do; I will eat something light an hour before workout, then workout, and then afterwards I will drink lots of water and have a proper meal. Thanks for your reply!

I'm not a health expert of whatever, but I've taken health classes so I think you should workout before you eat. This is because first, even though your stomach has already digested most of the food you ate the night before, there still are fats that weren't broken down due to your body's slow inactivity when sleeping. So working out in the morning will help you burn off those stored fats. Another reason is working out first then eating later will replenish the energy you spent. The most important reason for me why you should workout before eating is because when you eat, your stomach digests the food right? And your digestive system needs oxygen to digest the food. In body movements, your muscles also use oxygen to break down energy and use it. Exercising requires intense muscle work, thus, requiring a lot of oxygen for energy breakdown and consumption. So if your stomach uses a lot oxygen while digesting, and you're exercising while digestion takes place which also uses a lot of oxygen, your body would choose which task requires more oxygen. More often than not, your body deems that your muscles need more exercise and so they supply them more oxygen leaving your stomach working extra hard because of the lack of oxygen. Hence, you'll get the stitch. A pain you feel on the side of your tummy due to the lack of oxygen for digestion. Hope that helped! =)

If you want to be healthy and if yuo want to feel light after your breakfast you should tahe porridge for example rice or buckwheat or oatmeal and a cup of tea or glass of wather. I believe it is ok to have breakfast befoure your workout.

I'm not a fan of porridge or tea, however, I could probably substitute that with a healthy cereal (maybe one of the special K ones) and low fat milk. I feel that it is ok to eat before you workout too, as long as your meal is small and light, and you give your body some time to digest the food. Thanks for your response!
