If you were seriously underemployed

how would you survive and pay your bills? My husband and I have begun training in a new job, but right now there is not anyone available to continue our training, or vehicles to use for it. We are stuck. Not eligible for unemployment, but not fully employed. We have a small amount of monthly income we can count on,and it comes close to paying our regular bills, and we have basically tapped out all we had set aside for recent home repairs.
I am on several sites that pay a little, and I can mystery shop. I can start freelance writing again. So if you do not see me here, it is not because I do not want to be, but because I have to be working hard on other things.
Hopefully soon the security transport job will pick up some more.

I do work online as my part time work so don't earn much. And with this money i don't survive or don't pay my bills. This money i am saving for some other works. My father afford my all cost because still i am student. He gives me money to survive and pay my all bills.
Have a good time!

I liked it much better when my online earnings were just extra money. Study hard and enjoy being a young person.

I can totally relate to your problem. Between the neighbor problem, finding out that I need to get new glasses and I no longer have my optical coverage through the insurance, prices going up (contrary to what the government and Social Security say) and other pressures, you just can't see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I wish that I would win the lottery big time so that I could help out my Lot friends that are in the position that you're in. There is nothing more terrifying than to wonder where you will come up with the money to pay for food, utilities, vehicle expenses and more.
I will pray for you and send out good thoughts towards things improving for you. I wish I could do more! Please take care of yourself and I hope you will check into the Lot on occasion.

I will be here, have to make payout, you know. I feel pretty sure this job will eventually materialize. We are also making some applications. Sometimes you get so distracted by worrying you get paralyzed and do not do what it takes to get on a new path.

We have two barrels of cans we just need to go cash. We always pick them up if we are walking or find them in the parking lots. I have some issues with praying to angels and focusing on them. They are God's messengers, however. I do have a number of instances where God has sent me something that I was intending to buy. Including a new watch. I would have spent ten or less, but I got a $150 watch under my bushes in the front yard.

My Mom used to say about worrying about problems to:"Let go let God". It is amazing how much it helps. Also, I read in Woman's World about praying to your angels. I kind of poo pooed it until I tried it.
I had just gotten Monica and Little Bit from the breeder. Bill and I took them to town with us, and Bill decided that we needed to let the dogs out to go to the bathroom. I didn't have harnesses for them yet so it was a case of finding a spot far enough away from the road so that they would be safe. I found an area that was bordered by three busy roads, but the area was far enough away that there shouldn't be any problem. We let them out, Little Bit did his business and was ready to get back in the car. Monica promptly raced off investigating everything. Soon I lost sight of her. We both searched and couldn't find her!!! Bill took the car and cruised the roads and I walked the fields. We searched and called the dog for an hour and a half. It was starting to get dark and Monica was black so she wouldn't have a fighting chance if she wandered into the road. I was getting frantic because I wasn't about to leave that field without that dog. I was close to tears when a voice said, "Pray to your angels". I figured what the heck, it might work. So I prayed to my angels sobbing that I couldn't leave that poor defenseless dog alone. I looked up and about 20 feet away Monica appeared before my eyes. The area was totally flat with nothing for her to hide behind...I was stunned (Come to think of it so was Monica! )but quickly regained my senses and called her name. She literally floated on the ground towards my open arms. I collected her in my arms, so grateful that she was found, crying in relief and then making sure that I thanked my angels. People may criticize my beliefs, but it happened and I do believe in calling my angels to help when I really need it.
I too have often paralyzed myself with worry. Then I sit down quietly and tell myself that I have managed before and I can do it now. Sometimes it just takes a minor change that gets everything rolling in a positive manner. I try to get that message through to friends of mine, but they don't listen. I have clued them into the fact that the roadway going to my house has tons of aluminum cans scattered along it. I was informed that collecting aluminum cans was beneath the husbands dignity. I'm there thinking "Excuse me, you don't have food in the house, you need toilet paper and other things, you're living on a very limited income and it's beneath him to walk along a country road and pick up cans? At the price per pound for cans I'm not embarrassed to collect them and cash them in. At $1.57 a pound it doesn't take long to get enough to buy groceries and other items." I dropped the matter and pick them up myself and make extra cash that way.
Take care of you both, and if there is anything I can do to help just pm me.

Iam on unemployment. My husband is on nothing. All social security disability has been turned down, even judge hearing and appeals. His attorney told him there was nothing else he could do, except go back to work and start over. But he can't work, couldn't pass a physical. He does mechanical work on the side for lots of people that will let him work at his own pace.
Michigan doesn't look good for jobs, plus I am over 50 with arthritus. So it is a bleak outlook.
I keep our bills down and am thankful that we have everything paid off. We do have rental income and that pays most of our bills. In the fall we will have farm income from the crops too. I just have to be very careful. I overpaid, accidently, two credit cards this month but that leaves me short for the other one that I was worried about. I did make a mistake in my checkbook that is to my favor and I have money in the savings accounts. So we will be ok and I will be way ahead next month.

Our supper the last two nights have consisted of vegetables from the garden. Although I could have made other things to go with them. I decided to just stick with the vegetables. At least we have a garden. I feel for those living in town and apartments that couldn't grow a garden if they knew how. It helps so much through the summer. maybe I will even lose a little weight. That would be the bright side. The garden is my husbands hobby. I have to much trouble with the sun and heat to do much in it. Glad he enjoys it.
I am glad you had the census work too and hope that went well for you.

You are right, Michigan is pretty dismal. I know that this work is out there for us, it is a matter of getting everything paid in the meantime. It is pretty close but we are going to be okay. We also have some other things that we may implement. I just am glad I had a little census work earlier in the summer.

Many of the mystery shopping jobs have been cut back, but there are still a few. My concern now is that I will not take them unless there is a clear profit over the cost of my driving. Sulsisels, look at NARMS.com and set up a profile, you will see mystery shopping, resets, merchandising, inspections, and other contract type jobs. Also, Volition.com. If you can get these types of jobs without much out of pocket to be reimbursed or not much driving you can add to your income with them.

I having having time as well. I just graduated from college with student loans and it has been a year trying to find a job that fits my degree. So, right now, I have a part time which is a blessing in itself but I am also about to have my first child, so I get more and more stressed thinking about the extra money I will need. I am married but husband is basically in the same situation as me. We both work at the same retail store just different locations. Right now I am on maternity leave with no pay (no benefits being part time) but God seriously is making a way for us. Now, that I am out on leave, I am taking advantage of this time to apply for jobs that are full time and have benefits and hopefully by the time the baby is born and I can go back to work, I will find a great job.
I hope the best for you! I can totally relate but just keep the faith!

My daughter was working at a major retailer when expecting her first child. Her husband was fortunate enough to get a better job, but she had to continue to work there to have benefits for her pregnancy and delivery. She had terminal maternity leave though, as she found something to do from home for awhile, then hubby got to where he made more money. It is a rougher economy than it was four years ago. What is your degree?

Yes I agree about the economy, it is a big difference. I easily got an internship while in college back in 2006 to 2007 but now ts been discouraging. I have a degree in mechanical engineering technology, so am very annoyed after all that hard work...lol.I am working on changing up my resume so that I will stand out better because the competition seems to be fierce. I feel the longer it takes to find an engineering job, the harder it will be to get one...I dunno, I just pray and keep applying. I thinking my husband and I will have to relocate from North Carolina and go to another state. Oh well, we shall see.

It is hard for my husband and I to get things paid because he works part-time and I am currently out of work. We both attend college online and the financial aid money has been helping us out. His paychecks pay the bills (just barely) and the financial aid money helps with gas and food. I am glad that you are able to do some writing. I wish you all the best.

I have thought about going back to school, but I am probably twice as old as you are. Financial aid has to be paid back eventually. My son has paid all of his. My daughter is still paying hers, she and her husband. I hope school goes well for you and you finish school and have a great career.

It's a long thread, I skipped a lot... but have you tried hubpages? That, for me, is very successful - and I've not even written a lot of articles. I think one article/day for one year could produce a full-time income. One per day is achievable for everybody.
Hubs aren't for fiction, they're short articles about things. You could write, for example, about your driving work. Or lists of things work well too, even if they seem completely stupid at the time, for example even "Garden Centres near [your town name]".
If you belong to any forums, you could write hubs specifically for the subject those forums deals with, then put a link to your hubs in your signature.
Times are tough. I am living from my online earnings as my savings rate has dropped through the floor. My savings interest was my "backup plan" to live on, but now they're just worth nothing. So online work is paying for my whole life.
Good luck

I'm in a bit of a situation at the moment Gerty and I think it's similar to yours. I'm on a minimum benefit from the gov't because I'm deemed of an age where I don't need to work (in other words, too old to find a decent job). Living in a remote area doesn't help at all either. I was working as a volunteer driver for which I don't receive a wage but I am paid a car allowance and out of pocket expenses. It is not classed as income so I don't have to declare it or pay tax on what I'm paid. So far this year it's given me an extra $90 a week which has been excellent, BUT, my regular client has left town, so basically, my little job is over. On top of this, my little car broke it's timing belt and damaged the motor. It's with the mechanic now for over a week and I still don't know how much. I'm looking at several thousand dollars possibly. I have a little bit put aside for emergencies and I have the budget account where I save for the big annual bills. There's a little bit of room before my credit card is maxed out. The problem is, I have no way of making up that I've cut back on so many things lately...I can go further but I'm noticing my stress and anxiety levels are way worse than they should be. I'm quite worried as I've never been in a situation like this and I don't know which way to turn. At least you arfe not alone. I hope things pick up for you soon.

I've picked up one job worth $400 and I've cashed out a couple of on-line payouts for another $125. In normal times, that would be just great and I'd be thrilled but when I have to pay an unexpected bill, it's a paltry amount. Without my car, I can't do any jobs. A real catch-22. There is no work here in town although there may be a little job coming up soon that I have already put my hand up for. We'll get past these tough times my friend...we've come this far and we're ok, what's another small hurdle in the grand scheme of things?

Wow, that's a really difficult place to be in. I honestly don't know what I would do if my husband or I lost one of our jobs because we basically need both incomes to pay for everything right now. We're hoping to get better jobs eventually. I couldn't possibly imagine what would happen if both of us lost our jobs. I'd probably be looking for a new one and trying to make more money here on MyLot in the meantime! I would also probably find something part time if that's all there was until I could find a full time job or go from part time to full time. I try not to think about the "what if's" too much, but at the same time it's not bad to have something in mind should the worst-case scenario come to pass. It's always better to be prepared! Lucky for us, same as you - we have a little savings in case of an emergency, but I would hope we could find jobs and gain more income before running through our savings. If worse came to worse, my parents live just down the road, and my husband's parents live an hour north of here. I'm sure they would help us out for a while if it were an emergency. Thanks for asking. I surely hope your situation gets better soon because I know you are a hard worker and certainly deserve the best! Take care.

I agree that focus is certainly important. I find that if I'm trying to do a million things at once, nothing gets done. If I prioritize in getting one thing done at a time, I can more than likely get everything done. I'm happy to learn you have some stability in your income for those set bills that always seem to come up each month. I always try to predict what the bills will be each month, but it seems like there's always something more than what I thought or an additional bill that I forgot to take into consideration when I planned the next month's budget and spending. Oh well...I guess that's what keeps life interesting. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you have a wonderful evening. I also hope that many more moneymaking opportunities will come your way in the near future as you have been very diligent.

I got a variable rate mortgage twenty five years ago, at the top of the interest rates, it has gone down ever since. No car payments. Some back debt to pay, utilities, no kids that are under age. We will make it. I still have some reserves here and there and some paid sites to earn at.

I definitely know what it's like to be underemployed. I work for the Census and while I was very grateful to get the job, the reality that we all knew going into to was that it was temporary. I was working for them full time during Christmas and into the beginning of the new year but now as we are close to the end my hours have been drastically cut. I am still blessed to be working at all because a lot of the census workers have run their course and are out of work. However, it has been hard adjusting to the lower paycheck, especially since it came almost overnight with no warning. I still do things online to make more money but I still am not making enough to meet all bills. I hope to be there soon as I get back into merchandising, which gives me the flexibility I need but the pay is decent.

Personally from time to time, I think this is something that we all have been thru, and it can be frustrating for sure. Especially those of us here who have ever took a leap of Faith trying to start our own Business either online or offline and not sure you have what it takes Financially to be able to make a Go at it. I actually experienced somewhat of something like this myself about 4 months ago and what a learning experience it was, but definately happened like it did for the Best.

If we were seriously underemployed I think what we would do is try to figure out the best way to bring in income and also lower our expenses. Right now my husband is the only one working. I applied at a place and got an interview but called back Monday Morning and found out I didn't get the job.
We're both working online to help save up for our own place, but I know that I will definitely need to have a secure job before we can get a place of our own. If we were to ever be seriously underemployed with more bills then we could handle I would most likely be assisting the help of family. I would do what I could to help them out for a little bit of cash, of course my side of the family is 20 minutes away in a different county so that might not be a good idea with gas expenses and all. I would do what I could online definitely, but my plan is to try to save some money that I make online after we get a good flow of income just for bills. I would love to have a month's worth of bill money if I could saved up so that if we ever do get behind one month we will have that.
My grandfather has always told us grandkids that he used to save $5.00 out of his paycheck every week, and that we should to. We haven't, well my husband and I haven't, and know we need to, maybe more as the price of things are up from when he was first working and saved $5.00 every week.
With such uncertain circumstances with the economy, and with the uncertainty of social security when we get older (I've heard it's already going to hell in a hand basket) it's better to save what we can.
Oh and let me mention we'd grow our groceries more too.

I think a lot of people are having to redefine themselves in the work force and for those who are older and are getting phased out by technology is even harder to do. It sounds like you are trying to do what you can with the skills you've been given. Don't give up and keep reaching inside yourself for the answer. Writing is good because it may lead to other avenues.

My husband gets a small amount of retirement. It just is really tight for funds. I am supposed to be able to get unemployment, as the company we were training with is just having slow times and told us to file for temporary layoff status. It will be okay. We had a lot of expenses right before this happened that used up all of our reserve for major home repairs.

I know exactly how you feel. See I have been unemployed for the first time in my life. Worked with this company for nineteen straight years and one day we were all faced with closed doors. No unemployment, no forewarning..Nothing!
I tried to claim un-employment but none us were granted our rights. I have been living off my little savings just to pay bills, stretching every nickel until the well ran dry.
Now a home I have owned for 21 years, is under foreclosure, my immaculate credit has been destroyed. I am out of savings and still have the bills. I didn't splurge on even a crumb.
I have applied to every imaginable job but find that no one wants a person who is overqualified. Like you I have been online anywhere from 15 -20 hours per day trying to figure out how I can just buy food.
I have done several MS shops and can I tell you that although the shops themselves are easy you will find yourself online complete hours and hours of paperwork, just for the next 10 - 15 bucks it pays. Worst part most will not pay until 45 - 60 days later.
I do not want to spoil it for you, just wanted you to know that MS shops will not be enough and that you try yet plan C since Plan A has not worked out well.
Good luck to you, and by all means PM me if you need pointers on the MS shops as I have become a broke pro. They are very particular and picky and the slightest oversight can get your shop rejected.
