Uniform for the teachers

India
July 17, 2010 7:08am CST
Friends I read in the news paper that government of my state has ‘requested’ the school teachers to wear uniform while in school. It has not been imposed upon them. According to this gents teachers will wear full pant and shirt of specified color and lady teachers will wear sari and blouse of specified color. Here school and college students, teachers of convent schools, some private schools, employees of police, excise department, railway department, and non-government organizations wear uniform while on duty. While working as college principal, I was probably the first to introduce ‘dress code’ for college students in 2004. Wearing uniform while on duty makes us more organized. From the color of the uniform we can know the institution to which the employee or student belongs. What about your place and country. Please respond stating name of country and place and comment on the discussion too. Professor

Hello Professor... Awh my gosh that is so unfair!! well, I would encourage the students to have a particular uniform but not for the lecturers... here in Malaysia, we are not required to wear a particular uniform at the university level but of course we used to do have that at the school level... for the Muslims, they are required to wear scarfs and there is a particular Islamic university where the students are required to wear the scarf..besides, at the school level, we used to have our names written at the uniform... but, we don't any institution where the teachers or the lecturers are required to wear a particular uniform...

well i think it's not a good idea for imposing clg students to wear dress according to a dress code first of all,it's just bullsheet that students get a very organized attitude and all that. students wear dress in school and in clg atleast they should be given d freedom to wear of their choice. at d end of it i''l say that if students r enforced to wear a dress according to a dress code than professors also be enforced to do it ,even the principal

I understand your thoughts but I have seen the difference in schools that enforce dress codes. I do agree that teachers and staff should have a code, too, if not a uniform. Having a dress code equalizes the students. There are less distractions, the students do not judge each other on dress and in some areas, students are attacked or robbed due to what they wear. This will take away that factor.

It is varied here. It depends on the school and school district. We have many private schools as well as public schools. I honestly believe in either uniforms or, at least, strict guidelines on dress. I teach dance and I see a difference in the students when a dress code is instilled on them and feel that teachers should look professional. Basically, what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

i dont think they should have to wear them. i think to a certain degree u should b allowed to express ur style. im a heavy person and just because a uniform would look best on a skinny person doesnt necessarily mean it will on me. also its hard to find certain colors n my size including khakis

hello there, prof! i have no idea what clothes are you talking about, but here in my country, philippines we always have dress codes for teachers.as you've said,it's much more organized to have dress codes and uniforms.and it's easier to determine what school/university are you working at. we have different kinds of uniforms for everyday here.but for students, only one type, sometimes it depends on the course we are taking.we have different uniforms.sometimes there are also courses that don't take much time on having their uniforms.it's just nice to see wearing uniforms cause it's much more easier to not mind those clothes you will wear for the next day.

In the United States teachers have always had a general dress code, not specific. Some schools students have uniforms. In these security conscious times perhaps the teachers should also have a uniform. Student teachers are trained how to dress appropriately when they become full teachers.

I think it best shows yes, being organized to have a uniform, not only that actually... it even shows that your organization has unity, and has actually imposed discipline as well. it takes a lot of time and effort for people to follow new sets or rules or regulation, more so like wearing a uniform if they are often not used to wearing one. I think it is a good move though. Just make sure to have a wash day, still and of course to make a uniform that is very comfortable and professional at the same time.

Well frankly, I am not against it since in seeing the dress code of teachers from when my kids were in school and now my grand daughter... teachers dress like they just pulled something out of the bottom of the rag bag. THey look sloppy and unkept. And out here in CA, kids can't wear flipflops or sandles (that is a great dress code!) to school... but the teachers and proctors and aids all can. Talk about double standards. Teachers are setting an impression on kids... mentors and all that... so here's female teachers in flip flops, dirty feet sticking out, capri pants and low cut t-shirt slouching around with a huge cup of coffee in their hands...sorry but that doesn't give a good appearance to the kids. Men aren't as bad, but the women..not saying I'm better than anyone, but I might wear their outfits when I clean the toilets at home, but I would NEVER step foot out my front door looking as trashy and sloppy as they do. And I know the price of clothes. YOu can look decent and casual with clothes from Target.

Oh my goodness, I would absolutely hate that and I think that the kids would also. I truly hope my state or district never chooses to go that route. I think there is something for being able to dress how you want and to feel comfortable wearing what you want while you are teaching. I love our dress code. M-TH men have to wea dress pants and either a polo, sweater, button up, etc. Friday we get to wear jeans and school t-shirts

hello Prof, Here in my country the Philippines, every company, establishment almost had their own uniforms. Even with malls, cashier and saleslady had their uniforms to identify the employees according to their uniforms. The fast foods crew has uniforms too. The guards, security police had their own identified uniforms. The military had different uniforms specified from their fields (airforce, land base military, police, and even with the elite) The government employees had national uniforms all over the country and so with the government teachers (national uniform) Private sectors had their own identification uniforms too. School government had their own uniforms depending on the city. In that case,it is very easy to identify the students from where city they lived from their uniforms. Above all these, there's a different colors of uniform each day.

Hi Professor, I am ET from Latvia and teachers here do not need to wear uniforms they can wear clothes whose they normally wear in public places. Only private teachers need to wear uniforms. I think It is not necessary to wear them If you do not like It or you do not want It. If teachers at your place is happy for this I am too only happy. I think all kids need to wear the uniforms, because we solve the problem with rich and poor kids. You know some rich kids laughing for poor kids clothes, but with uniforms they all be equally. By the way in which state you are living? Take care, Have a nice day!

I think a lot of kids who have to wear uniforms think that the teachers should too. Its not about conformity but about school policy. If the kids want the teachers to dress the same as them so they can all feel that they are on the same level then they should petition the school board. A private school is not funded by government money so they can do what they choose, not everybody can go to a private school but that doesn't mean they should cheapen their education. Learn what you can and apply everything. United States, Lompoc California.

My daughter goes to a public elementary school here in Kentucky that is a uniformed school. This means that the students have to wear polo shirts and black/navy/khaki bottoms. There is also a dress code for the teachers that they have to adhere to. The only time that they are allowed to dress outside the dress code is on one Friday a month or any Friday if they have a dress down pass. A lot of people have objected to this, but I think it is a great idea and I think that all the schools should go to this kind of uniform.

So many schools in so many countries have adopted a dress code for students. This includes both public and private schools. Students are required to wear a uniform to attend those schools. It's only fair that the teacher should have this requirement too. What;s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Hi Professor! In my country Philippines, we all wear uniforms at school, and as you say it really makes us look more professional and organized, plus its really good sight to see, don't you think? Actually, during my high school days, different years wear different colored jogging pants during Physical Education and during our school excursion. That is yellow for first year, green for sophomores so on... Our school teachers says it's helpful because they can Identify instantly a student IF they are doing something wrong, like what year they are in. ^.^ This is why I tend to be a good girl whenever I'm wearing that jogging pants at school... lol!
