Do you allow your children to play in the rain?

I remember as a kid my Mom didn't like me to play in the rain because I might get struck by lightening even though there was no thunder or lightening in sight, or I might catch a cold. Now I have kids of my own and of course they want to play in the rain. I allow this as long as there is no thunder or lightening and they have a blast. Do you allow your kids to play in the rain or not?

I did put my daughters under heavy down pour when they were children, but only for a few short minutes. I just wanted them to feel the rain. Then I gave them hot baths so they wouldn't catch colds. But through the course of their growing up, they would sometimes allow the light rain or the drizzle refresh their skin and hair. They love rain, too, as I do!

My mother was just like you. But now that I´m mother I am afraid that my children get sick, because they don´t obey me to take a hot bath. However we have not had heavy rain since a few years. =( My little son made me promise him that I´ll allow him to play in the rain, in the next rain... we are still waiting, though. lol.
Blessings!...?

I don't have kids, but I was never allowed to play in the rain because i might of gotten sick like you said, and I think that is a good rule to follow, if the children are so young.

When I was little, there was a decade-long drought. Rain was a very rare treat, & my maternal grandmother allowed me to splash around in it. She watered her flowers, but not the grass, which being some variety of really tough Bermuda, survived, so I never had the option on her farm to play in a yard sprinkler's reach. Later on, while staying with some cousins in Houston, friends & I would play in my Aunt's water sprinkler, making rainbows, loving every minute of it!
I can't imagine not being allowed to have the joy of running around in the rain! What a sad thing to put a child through!
Anyway, while one might get a slight chill, no-one gets a cold from playing in the rain. Colds are caused by germs, & maybe a weak immune system which, had one been exposed to cold germs before getting chilled, might then leave one with a cold...but hey, so what? A little cold is no great price to pay for so much fun!

I totally agree! I don't see the difference in playing in the rain vs playing in a sprinkler. Unless of course it's during the middle of winter. And even then we allow our kids to play in the snow!
I absolutely do not think you will catch a cold from playing in the rain. So, next time it rains head outside with your kids and have a great time!

I don´t allow them. I´m afraid that they get sick. However the smallest one is waiting for a heavy rain. He made me promise I´ll allow him to play in the rain, and he promised me he´ll take a hot bath after, though. But we are still waiting a heavy rain (since two months ago) lol.
Blessings!...

I allow them as long as they are in front of our house. I let them enjoy being kids as I enjoy my childhood days.

Hi. MirandaKay. No. I would never allow my kids to play in the rain at all. They will get really sick with a cold if I let them do so. If I so happen to have to be outdoors while it is raining, I will make sure that we all are standing underneath a closed area.

MIRANDA: Wow! Thanks for the BR mark! I really appreciate those!
Yes, it never fails to amaze me, the ideas some folks have about weather & health. I'm only 62, but whatever colds I had didn't kill me, & I've never gotten a cold just from playing in water, whether swimming, splashing in puddles, or just taking a cold shower. I wonder if those here who are afraid rain will give their kids a cold are just fine with them going swimming on the same kind of warm day that Summer showers come? If so, why? Getting wet all over will happen either way, so...how is rainwater dangerous while pool water (which even has extra chemicals in it) is perfectly acceptable?
I'm just asking a logical question. Who here compartmentalizes this way? Why do you do that? It's a natural--even useful--human trait, but on occasion it bottles up this thought from that thought, & we must force our minds to knock down the barriers, in order for our thoughts to be checked against one another...to see if they contradict, or not.
I think folks should just think this whole thing through, logically! You might surprise yourself when you do, & then, the next time the sky is falling (BEG), go out & play in the drops of clean water yourself, without fear. You have a lot of time to make up for the all the fun you've missed!

I let my children play in the rain, but only for a few minutes - 5 minutes at the most. My main reason is catching a cold. I let my 1 year old go out in the drizzle two days ago and it was funny to watch her try to catch a rainfall in her hands. If it is heavy rain, I would not let them. But a slight drizzle, I'm ok with it as long as it's not overdone.

As a child, mama did not allow me to play in the rain because she was afraid I might get hurt. She just let me sat beside the window to be able to observe my friends laughing and playing under the pouring rain. It was a very sad memory.
When I got my only son, I had a second thought of letting him play in the rain but my husband encourage him to enjoy the rain. Ending? The three of us went out and played around the neighborhood with me the happiest. Why? It was my first time.
