Why do you say you're a music lover?

I don't understand people claiming they're music lovers yet when you ask them, they only listen to a certain genre. Yeah we have favorite genres and genres that we prefer. But how can you say you're a music lover if you do not appreciate other songs outside of your genre preference? I am a music lover and yeah maybe I have a tendency to love RnB songs because I like how the music is arranged and the beats. But I really don't consider the genre when I appreciate songs. Whatever the genre is, if the song's musical arrangement, beat, and lyrics are attuned with my aesthetics, then I love those songs. There are also songs where I either love the lyrics, or the music. There's really no song that I don't like. There's always something I would appreciate about them. It can be the lyrics or the music. But I certainly love those which are good in both. What about you? Can you really say you're a music lover?

I think anybody who loves music can claim that they are music lovers. It doesn't matter if you love only one genre. I have a friend who sings jazz to earn a living. Her life is filled with music night and day but she could not tolerate heavy metal. Would you not call her a music lover?

That's my point. It doesn't matter what genre you are listening or liking. It only depends on how you see music based on your daily living.

Well just because she sings Jazz does that automatically mean she only likes Jazz? And I also can't tolerate heavy metal, but if I got presented by its lyrics, I could appreciate it. if we're being subjective, then of course it's about how you feel about music. But we're talking about music in general. Let me refute your example, if you're singer, you can sing very well, and you do it for a living, does that automatically mean you're a music lover? I can tell you a friend of mine or two who are good singers yet they don't listen to music. Again, if we're being subjective, yes you're all right. Nobody's opinion is wrong. But what I'm saying is that if you're a music lover then you appreciate all kinds of music regardless of genre.

I pretty much listen to almost anything. And yeah. I would probably consider myself as a music lover. I'm actually open to almost all genres although i still have a favorite genre i mostly listen to. But i also agree to others who commented that anybody who loves music can claim that they're music lovers. In my case since in our family almost everyone knows how to play instrument we tend to share different genres that influences us. Like my parents, aunts and uncles. They mostly listen to old types of music. While my siblings, cousins and i listen to different genres like heavy metal, hard rock, classical, goth, alternative even love songs. So whenever we have this "musical family bonding thing" we make it a point that we go through every genres the family likes. Most especially if you play instrument/s. =]

Again, that's exactly my point. =) If you are a music lover, then you have to be open about music and love music for being music not because of its genre. I mean, how would you feel when your someone claims he is a music lover yet he knows just one song and likes it because it's popular and everybody listens to it. Of course anyone could say that they are music lovers. If that's how you perceive yourself then by all means, call yourself a music lover. =)

I would say I am a music lover because there are only a few genres that I don't like and even then I find a few songs in that genre that are okay. My favorite genres are world music, country, and pop. Not a big fan of EMO, Heavy Metal, or RB or punk really. But I always have an open mind when it comes to music and I can appreciate a song for lyrics or musical arrangement.

That's it right? That's what I'm talking about. Even though you have preferences in music, you have to have an open mind and not be biased nor prejudice when it comes to the singer or genre. =)

When I listen to music, I'll choose a genre depending on my mood. But generally, I appreciate all kinds of music, from classical, instrumental to rock music. I am versatile with music. I also listen to old songs which my parents love listening to. I also play piano and guitar which makes me more love music.

I can definitely say that I'm a music lover. I'm a singer, I play piano, I write my own music. Additionally I listen to Pop, Rock, Indie, R&B, Country, Folk, Jazz, and many other genres/subgenres of music. I'm always looking to discover new artists and I listen to music from all different decades. One of my favorite groups is The Beatles, for example. I'm only 21 so it's not like this music was just around for me to know. I sought it out because I truly am a music lover.

That's the music lover I'm talking about. =) You listen to all kinds of music and appreciate all genres. And you even listen to old songs not dismissing them outright just because they're old or whatever prejudices people have with music. I also play the piano, the guitar and the flute. Not to sound cheesy or corny but whenever I play music, I feel like it reaches my inner self. It helps me relax and it comforts me. =)

How about the writer the of the RNB song you like? since they only write RNB song's doe's it mean that they cannot be music lover? and so with the other music writer in other genre? Genre is just a classification of music. Not because you don't appreciate other genre it means you cannot be a music lover. Not because you appreciate any music genre you can call yourself as a music lover. It doesn't count on that way either. Music defines feelings and emotions, mixed with rhyme, blended by note's and nurture by beats. Loving music is easy as everyone does. You may love it because you are personally attached to it's lyrics or love it because it's popular or because of the person who sing it. But no matter what reason you have keeping that music alive, appreciating every single notes and beat on it, i can say that you are a real music lover. -mychickencurry

Ok you're missing the point here. Dude, even if you ask RnB song writers, I'm pretty sure RnB is not the only genre they're listening to. True, genre is just a classification of music. But again, how could you say you're a true music lover if you're biased when it comes to genres of music? Just like what you said, music defines feelings and emotions etc. so you have to love music in general and not be choosy with genres. If you prefer listening to only RnB music, would you say you really appreciate music? Please look at the discussion a little deeper and analyze the point more. The point of this discussion is if you're a music lover if you appreciate music in general regardless of genre. What do you mean "not because you appreciate any music genre you can call yourself a music lover"? Loving music as music means you love the melody, the feelings you feel whenever you hear it, the rhythm, the notes, etc. all of which means that you need to appreciate all kinds of music in spite or despite of their genre. Besides, your argument that "music defines feelings and emotions, mixed with rhyme, blended by note's and nurture by beats. Loving music is as easy as everyone does(what?)" brings the topic in a subjective note. I'm not saying that you're wrong. If we're being subjective here, then your arguments are absolutely right about the feelings. But this is an objective discussion because it specifically tackles the issue of a person claiming he/she is a music lover and yet he/she just listens to songs he/she prefers which happen to be included in one classification/genre. Please take a deep analysis of the discussion first before you refute the argument. =)

Hi, I too, claim to be a music lover, and I believe that I am. I like to listen to different music genres, but not all. That doesn't mean that I shouldn't claim to be a music lover. We like to eat, but not all types of food, yet we still like to eat. As you know some music is not suitable for all ears. I am a fan of R&B, Jazz, Gospel, PoP classics and many many more genres, but I will skip the Metal for sure, it is just not what I can to listen to. However, to each his/her own perference, right?

Anyone can be a music lover. Whatever genre or style the music is (even if you don't know how to play, sing, or perform it), as long as you appreciate your kind of music, you are a music lover!

I can say I'm a music lover because even though I graduated from a medical field and is a registered medical professional, I still would like and love to be a singer and I can't get that dream out of my mind..(sigh) I just live the dream in some other ways.

Well, I mostly listen to rock, but you can find some rap, blues, folk, country, jazz and other things if you could browse my ipod.... And I absolutely love music... even if I don't like all the genres. People have have different tastes and backgrounds in music, and listening to only certain genres shouldn't have to limit your love towards music. I hate techno, reggaeton, dance music, electronic music... but i love the music i listen to. The music world is too huge to say you either love it or don't as a whole. You would have to listen to every type of musical genre before you can give an opinion... So i think everyone has the right to love music, even if they only listen to certain genres... and one more thing... Keep on rockin' in the free world...

I can say I am a music lover I like anything from Judas Priest to BB King to Phantom of the Opera I have a wide variety of likes although I do lean more toward Hard Rock. I listen to music all the time even when I sleep. I can not get through the day with out it. It helps me deal with my moods and well life. There really is no better thing in my opinion than a Great Song whether it is instrumental or with lyrics.

I say I'm a music lover because I really do love all different types of music. Certain genres/types of songs are better depending on your mood or what you are dealing with at any certain time. I tend to be more interested in what the lyrics of the song actually say that what type of music it is.
