I am a fresh graduate. A student who doesn't excel much in school. I am not a consistent deans lister but I don't have a flanking remarks either.I am a graduate of Bachelor of Arts Major in Political Science, but no chance of continuing to law school. Of course, I continue my life after graduating from college to searching for new job. I was looking for the magazines and local news paper in our place, hoping for job hiring that I can apply my course. Then there you go, job hiring are for call centers and tutorials only. NO place to apply the said degree. So, I said to myself, I need to have a career. So I tried applying to one of the call centers in our place, I was very confident that time until they ask me Why don't you apply your course??? Then I answered, there's no chance for me to do so...I thank this business for offering a career for us fresh grad...yadadadada...I was really confident that I made it.,but when he reads his assessment the only thing he says was your course doesn't fit you in this career! It means i don't have problem speaking the language...So I went out in that cubicle asking.....
Does call centers have course discrimination???

Oh that's pretty disappointing. From what I know, all courses are applicable in call centers in fact even if you did not finish a college course for as long as you are proficient in English and can communicate well you will be qualified to work in call centers. Call centers are just particular in English proficiency and college degrees did not really matter. Well, the call center HR you applied for must have been very rude and need seminars in human behavior.

Damn! i should mentioned "HUMAN RESOURCES" Department in my response.oh, yeah, interviewers can be CHOOSY and i have heard stories from applicants whom i have been with few years ago. see, back then CALL CENTER is booming, but what about now?

Sadly most of them require applicants to have at least finished 2nd year college. It doesn't matter whether you are proficient in English and can bring the skill set, passion to excel to the workplace. I'm always told that I failed because of my educational qualifications. In spite of being able to breeze through all the exams and managing to get to the final interview. I'm even surprised that some company would hire someone who went AWOL if they have a valid reason. But not for finishing college. Not even poverty. I'm still on the hunt for an "equal opportunity" employer. Right now I'm self-studying to be a web developer, as it is the only road for me now.

It can't be true, those are just one of their mythical excuses and historical alibi's. I started working in a call center when I was 19. Actually I'm an undergraduate of Nursing course and yet I'm running my 3rd year in the same company I first work. I even got promoted right after my probationary period.

I don't think so. That course discrimination that you are saying is not existing in the industry. Maybe the one who conducted the interview cannot find a good word to please you. I have a friend who's a nurse and yet she is in the roll of a call center company.

I am an accounting graduate and I had a very bad english when I started but the call center I applied to gave me the chance and even sent me to training before hiring me. I do not think call centers are disriminative. In fact, quite the opposite, call centers is an industry that promotes equality. It is the only place where you are allowed to call your bosses by their first name, you can chat with them as an equal, make fun of them while they're there, etc.
Its a very fun and rewarding career. I worked in my course as well and became an accounting analyst so I think I can really compare the difference with the industries.
Very little politics in call centers because you can always show your performance not like in some work where you have to wait for the boss to die to get his job or suck up to him/her to be promoted just because there's no way you can be graded or scored except your personality which is always subjective.
I would suggest for you to answer this also, "If there is an opening in your course and you are currently working here, will you apply in the opening?"
"How long are you planning to work here?"
"Where do you see yourself 3 years from now, 5 years from now?"

It seems that there are call centers that are very choosy in terms of course. Maybe it is in demand nowadays that is why they are having quotas at the same time. As far as I know everyone can really apply on that job even students that are still in 2nd year college as long as they are fluent in English.

I think it really depends on the company and the the interviewer, don't be discouraged you can still apply to other call centers, every call centers are different it doesn't mean you cannot apply to other, check company profile or better ask someone who has a CC experience.it doesn't about what course you take but how your communicate in english.

Hello Mhayfie,
There's no discrimination in the Call Center as not the WHOLE.
But there is a degree of Discrimination in the Staff and Recruitment Area
I remember several stories about interviewers betting on this guy or gal interviewees. some would stated they passed this person because they like the appearance, and rarely pass those who have experience. but of course, command English holds no discrimination, but i felt sad knowing that the interviewers aren't much doing they're job but to be CHOOSY and not choose the best.
Yes, it happened alright. am sure that now call centers are not as booming as before, it's gonna happen again.

What, did they really tell you that?
I worked in a call center for a while, and they accepted everyone who had graduated from high school, so we didn't have any education discrimination.
It's sad to hear that it is happening to you. I hope you can find a good job!

Hi Mhayfie. Don't be discouraged. It might not be the real reason why they didn't hire you. Just go and apply for more jobs. Soon you'll be able to land a good job. Good luck on your job hunting!

He was probably trying to tell you that you are overqualified, or that because you graduated BA Political Science then you may have a "radical" tendency (due to the word "political") and cause disturbance in the company.

Nope there is no course discrimination in the call center. The most important requirement that they need are good communication specially in interacting with the customer. So the only advice that I can give you is never be dismay about what happen. It's their loss not yours. Anyway I'm also a political science grad and I have been to different center as a tech support agent. So do not be despair about that single incident. :)

I think only nursing student aren't allowed in call centers because they don't want nursing student to use call center training for english training lesson. Some nursing student just using call center to be their training grounds to be more fluent in English, then after a few months they'll resigning.

I really don't think there's discrimination but i guess that depends on who interviewed you for the job. He/she probably thought that you could find other job that suited you more, but if you're really determine to be in a call center I'm sure you'll find one that will hire you.
One advice though if ask how long would you wanna work for them at least answer 2 years. The reason they sometimes don't hire nurses is because they think they have the tendency to resign early, maybe you also have that aura. High attrition rate is one of the major problem in the call center industry they just wanna lessen that.

hi mhayfie, it is indeed a sad experience for you applying in a call center and felt the discrimination. well for me i guess, there is no such thing as course discrimination, first and foremost, i am an undergraduate of a short term course, what i did, if i didn't make firsthand, i keep on going and going until some company outthere can hire not because of my educational attainment, but as what they can see as a potential asset to the company. just go on, nothing to lose, break a leg...good luck to your next job hunting. i know you can do it....God bless and take care...

Nope. I've had officemate who are psychology and accounting graduates. I even had a co-worker who was a geologist, fancy that. There are several factors that might have hindered you from landing the job. My advice is to never give up until you land a job in the call center industry. Good luck!

i dont think its all about the course as maybe its just their excuse. i work in callcenter for many years and become one of the officer and im an accountancy graduate and i got hired. i also have workmate there with different courses while the rest was not even a college graduate and the rest are still studying, yes, you can also work in callcenter while studying.
maybe you did not passed in their requirements which is of course the english test and interview as they are very strict with english specially with grammar and pronunciation, i didnt say that maybe your not good in english as perhaps they dont just like the result of your exam and interview. so forget about course discrimination as even high school grad can work in callcenter as long s they have good english command
dont just give up, try to apply to other callcenter as not all callcenter are strict some of them are not. just be confident with your english and watch out for grammar as its a big deal for them.
the next time they ask you why you didnt apply based on your course then dont tell them that theres no availability nor no chances to apply for the said course coz its a big no no, rather tell them that you decided to apply in callcenter rather than your course coz you realize that callcenter offer higher salary and good benefits which is a big help financially.

I have worked in several call centers and most of my officemates come from diverse courses. In fact, I have concluded that there is no course requirement in call centers. I met a project manager who was a B.S. Chemistry graduate and she has been working in call centers for most of her working life. I have met a lot of Political Science graduates too and the fit right in. There was even an Agriculture graduate who became team leader. So in answer to your question, no, there is no course discrimination in call centers.

I've worked in several call centers. My officemates would have all sorts of college degrees. Actually, most are not even related to the job, even me. I graduated with a Business Administration degree. There are even smaller call centers who do not require a college degree. However, at one point, in one of the call centers I worked at, they refused to accept graduates of nursing. Maybe because they thought that they will leave as soon as they get a job abroad. They wanted to make sure they will only accept those who plan to stay long.
