My dogs normally only bark for a reason, not for the sake of it.Last night my dogs as in all three of them were barking and would not stop,my husband went into their run with a torch and could not see a thing in there that was wrong. He then stood there watching the dogs and all of a sudden realised that on the other side of the run, right up close to it was a baby hedge hog and that is what they were barking about.I have a six foot fence around my garden so how did it get there, mmm.I put the hedgehog that was all curled up in a ball, thankfully it was gone this morning when i looked.

Oh, the story was keeping me in a suspense until the hedgehog appeared! I would tell you first "They barked because of the full Moon", but then I realized that the matter has been another. That's good that your dogs (all three dogs!) don't bark for no reason! My former dog sometimes at night wasn't stopping to bark for no reason. I go to check and there is nothing. When I go back home, it begins again.
By the way, the same story has been happening and to me two or three times. And my father was telling me that the hedgehogs are dancing if you make a beat with something. I wanted to see this, and he took a metallic dust-pan and a spoon and began to make a moderate beat with them... fter 5 minutes of beating the hedgehog developed itself and began to move to and fro in the moment, he hit the dust-pan. Yeah, it looks like a dense "to and fro". Then I realized that the animal was shocking and that's why it goes to and fro. A little crazy, but you should try once if you find a hedgehog again. Have a nice day. :)

All righty then! Fun with hedge hogs! But we don't have those critters up north here in New York State, I'll have to take your word for it! :-)

my dog, Cujo, seldom barks, he whines and howls, and last night, for the first time, he howled inside the house
woke me up at 4 something in the morning!
I threw his butt outside! Then I was awake until around 7 till I could get back to sleep.
gotta be fresh for the reunion later - leaving soon...

I have never seen a hedgehog before, the animal must have been afraid of your dogs as well.

I bet that poor thing was scared! They're awfully ugly things though, huh. My dog always barks for a reason. He's a small dog, but he thinks he has the bark of a huge dog. If he barks, I always know someone is outside. This is sometimes bad though, because I'm on the top floor of the apartment building, with a clear view outside my patio door of the back of the complex. So he sees everyone walking their dogs, of all hours of the night. I put something in front of the patio door at night so he can't see anything, but he still hears people.

That is how my puppies are too, especially Ciara who doesn't bark as much as her sister who barks at the neighbors coming home.. What they both end up barking at are the squirrels which teases every dog in the neighborhood..

lol, when they all start barking then you know some thing is up. If they keep up nd will not stop there is some thing there. Mine are that way too.

Awww, poor little thing. He had to be terrified with all that barking. I think they're adorable and I'm glad he got away. Could he have somehow crawled under the fence?

YEah, dogs do bark for a reason.. Sometimes it's due to seeing something familiar/unfamliar.. Anything can happen.. However the different tones of their barks represent the different things they are seeing. As such, we are able to hear if their barks are fierce kind or plain happy barking, as if they are trying to share their joy to us ^_^

My dogs do the same thing. When we first got them we thought that they were just barking for the sake of barking. They'd start barking in the middle of the night and we didn't know why. It took a while for us to realize that they were barking at the neighbor's kids who liked to walk in front of our house late at night. They also bark when other animals get into our yard. The other day they were spazzing out in our back yard. They kept on running around and barking like crazy. We didn't see anything in the yard so we were wondering why they were acting strange. Turns out there was a possum in our yard and it was hiding behind some barrels.

Dogs that usually don't bark unless there is a reason, bark at unusal things movement in the yard, other animals around or the dogs biggest reason INTRUDER, like a robot or security alarm an intruder sets them all off.

We've got two dogs and neither of them will typically bark without a reason either. Well, my older dog will bark at wildlife and she really doesn't like it when there is someone harrassing her. My neighbor (grown woman) loves to get out there and harrass my dog and then tell me that she is barking for no reason at all. I'm not blind and I can see what she is doing to the dog, but that is all beside the point. Even when you think a dog is barking for no reason, there is typically something that they are barking at.

hi jugsjugs oh yes the dogs would bark at a strange little critter
like the baby hedgedog. We could not have pets in our last apt. complex
but next door to us on the other side of a wall were some condos
and the one couple let their two dogs stay out side at night.
no kennel just on chain. those dogs would start barking in the middle of the night and I got so I knew why.old mr Possum came down from the hills looking for leftovers and he would waddle past them close enough they could see him, but not touch him at all. He headed for our patio and I got up; and chased him away. so he waddled back past the dogs and they started their barking all over again.

I have never seen a hedge hog. And a baby one at that! Those little guys can sure get around obviously. Isn't there something you can put out there to keep them away? Without hurting them hopefully. I always hate hurting them but I guess sometimes you have to. Good luck!

yes thats true. theres usually something going on. when i had my house, the dogs barked 2 nights in a row because there was a cat meowing we could hear and i thought it was next door. but the 3rd day, i was pulling into my garage and happened to see a poor kitty on my roof!! dont know how it got there but it had been up there nearly 3 days...luckily when i called 911, the policeman came and got it down. poor thing was starved and very thirsty. it belonged to a neighbor that haddent even looked for it!

Yes dogs are great that way. They can always sense when there's something wrong in the household. That's why I love my two dogs, they're really great for keeping me safe. They bark to let me know when someone's at the door and if we're out my little one will bark at other dogs until she realizes they aren't a threat to me.
