Is it good to be a house cat?

We've been thinking about getting a cat, we have never owned one before and haven't had any other 'real' pets like rabbits, or dogs etc. so we thought a cat would be a good first pet. However, we're not keen on it roaming around the streets and also whatever it gets up to out there...fights with other cats, getting run over, bringing in surprises...all sorts etc. One option is to keep it as a house cat, but then the thought of that is convenient for us but surely not good for the well-being of a cat...it would be like being imprisoned....? Could anyone expand on this?

If you get a kitten and raise it as a housecat he/she will not really miss being outside. Another idea is to adopt a cat from a rescue or your local animal shelter that's already been someone's house cat. We have a rescued cat we adopted that is the sweetest most loving cat you could ever want. She was about 3 years old when we adopted her last year. We just adore her.
A house cat is so much healthier and will live longer than an outside cat based on our experience. They don't have near the problems with fleas or ticks or worms. You won't have to worry about them fighting with other cats or getting hurt. If you decide to get a kitten, I would strongly suggest getting your cat neutered/spayed as soon as it's old enough so you don't have to worry about a female in heat or a young tomcat spraying inside the house.

I think 2 cats are happier than just one. They'll play together and be good company for each other. We've never had just one cat - always 2 or 3 in the house. They're very entertaining and they're a joy to have.

I think it's ok to keep a cat a house cat. As long as it's given love and maybe some cool tower thing to climb and scratch at and food and water of course. You also have to have a litter box which is not fun to clean or smell!! Keep it in a place you can close the door and not smell or see it. But cats are a great first pet as you can leave for quite a few hours and not worry. Cats don't have to be let outside to potty, and it won't go starving because you can leave lots of food out and cats will not over eat. They are a great companion. Good luck!

I have always had cats and i think that it is going to be hard for you trying to keep a cat in,as they do get out of windows and doors when ever they get the chance.I think that there are alot of people that keep cats as a house cat,but to be honest i think it is your choice.I have just had one of my cats ran over and it is heart ache when that happens, but at the same time i think that it would have been unfair to him to keep him in, as he was born outside and cats like to explore.I have always had cats and a few of them have been killed by cars. They do a cat lead on the internet,if that is any use to you,so you get to take it outside, that way you will both be happy.

Apart from the care of cats, one other issue to consider is whether it has any awareness of it's environment should it get out by mistake. Ours did, and it took us 2 weeks of door to door leaflets to find her. She had been living on scraps put out for birds, and was spotted. She was 4 streets away.
When we moved, and had a garden, she was happy to live in the house, but roam the garden, and rarely went any further.
They are all different characters. When you decide, I hope that yo get to spend many tears together. We adopted ours from someone who were going abroad, but she proved to be older than they had told us, so she passed away sooner than we expected.

I had one housecat and the rest were outside cats. When I had outdoor cats, my grandparents would let them stay inside when they were kittens, but once they reached the grown-up stage, then they became outside cats. And it always seemed after a two year cycle I was losing cats that way. Then again they weren't sprayed or neutered. When I got my last cat, I made him an indoor kitty. He was neutered. And he, for the most part, was well behaved. And, I didn't have to worry about him leaving me after a couple of years. The only bad thing was when we got a bird for my grandpa. Then life got interesting in that house for a spell. We would tell Billy(cat's name) that we do not eat members of the family. But, he was looking at the bird like a gourmet meal. But, he learned, and as long as that bird was living we didn't any problems with having those two pets in the house. My grandmother had an inside cat, and she didn't have any problems with it. It did like my cat would do sometimes, it would have it's own perch near a window where it could look out and look at the birds. But, I wouldn't say it was imprisioned. I always looked at it as protecting my cat from those bad elements outside.

I suppose that is one good way of looking at it, but sometimes, instinct just takes over...I know as a human, there are so many things that are naturally present in us, but that we've tried to shut it out in order to confirm to a civilised being, but that's entirely something else... :)
We also have fish, so I am also wondering whether the cat will look at them and start licking its lips too... ;)

no~no~no~Cats have a naturally free character. I disagree to keep a cat in a room all of its life.
