Hair for Hope

My male boss has volunteered to shave bald besides raising funds in support of children with cancer in an annual event called Hair for Hope. I notice that the majority of the volunteers are male. Would you also do something likewise besides donating money? Being female, I doubt I would shave bald unless I have a personal involvement such as a family member suffering from the disease to show support. Do you have this event in your country also? Would you volunteer or make a donation?

If you're female, you do not have to shave your hair bald actually. You just have to grow it long first, then if it's already long enough, you can have it cut to a level you are comfortable with, like above the shoulder level that is still fashionable. What this organization needs are hair strands so they can make it into wigs. Children with cancer are undergoing chemo therapy and they lose their hairs in the process. And they would be needing wigs to cover for that hair loss. My 15-year old daughter did that. She grew her hair very long and cut it to donate to the Hair for Hope for children with cancer.

hi vikkitita, thanks for highlighting this. Didn't know there was this option. Kudos to your daughter for her support!

i don't think i'd be able to shave my hair, being a woman like you. i can help out in other ways like giving financial help to those children and praying for them.

thanks darylT for your comments. I'm sure support in whatever form is very encouraging.

I have some female friends who did that, and I commend them for that. I think for males, being bald could be seen as a fashion statement but it's not so easy for ladies. I think people would probably stare at them wondering whether they are nuns and what are they doing in civilian clothing.

As a female depending on the amount of money I would do it, not that the money will go to me but it would have to be able to make a big impact. I lost both my grandparents to Cancer and that thought alone IO would do. I already do Charity work and I also donate money as the time, to the point that I had to show down because things have got a little tight with the economy.

hi shiquitatw, cancer is a very painful disease as I am sure many would testify to - all the more so for children. The Hair for Hope event is a show of support for these children and creating an awareness that children can be similarly afflicted with cancer. Kudos with the charity work and your heart of compassion.
