Income tax return filed at last

India
July 31, 2010 7:26am CST
Friends, today, July 31, 2010, was last date for filing Income tax return in India for the income from April 1st 2009 to March 31st 2010. They have made the IT Return form so complicated, so many details you have to provide about your income from salary, pension, bank interests, income from other sources etc. One need not enclose any supporting document, but the details you provide are sufficient to track things. I was collecting the TDS (Tax Deduction at Source) certificates for last 6 days, as they were not ready at the bank. I am happy I could file the return on the last day. Many here hire services of a ‘Tax consultant’ for this purpose of filing; the minimum charge is 500 rupees, so I did it myself. Usually I file them well in advance. What about you, have you done that, do you do in advance or wait till last day? Please share. Professor

Hai Kalav56, Can you help me regarding the online efiling of returns? In Pan card my husband's name is put first continued with my name, whereas in reality my name comes first and then my husband's name coming. Whatever name I fill up in the registering form, it is not registering. It says surname/name does not match with the data given. I and my husband tried all sorts but nothing happened. Can you please clarify in this regard please which will be very helpful to me. Thanks in advance and sorry for the trouble.

Till now I struggled with e-filing and it was not registering at all. Whatever name I filed, it says name not matching, surname not matching. I and my husband literally went mad with e-filing. Fortunately just now I read a message that the date is extended up to 4th August. I hope I file before that either with e-filing or in person. Usually my Auditor was filing it. This time I could not get him on phone. How can the e-filing be not user-friendly? Should there not be instructions given for possible problems?

If you have filed online, can you please guide me about this surname, name problem please. I filled as per pan card, my original name (as in pan card they put my husband's name first). But nothing is working out. I put my father's name in the surname column. Still not registering. I am going mad.

Hello Professor, Ahh Tax time, now I'm on the peension, I don't have to file a tax return unless I earn extra income. I did work a part time job to supliment my psnsion but my earnings were under the minimum. i'm happy that tax returns are in the past now!

I hate to wait until the last day but since I have to claim many deductions, as an independent contractor (and before when I owned my own business), I find it is worth the cost (about $300) to have a tax professional do it. I have been audited, and learned much from the experience and realize, that having them handle it, takes a lot of stress and worry off of my shoulders. Peace of mind is worth the cost, at least for me.

If I owe money I wait till the last heartbeat of the final hour of the final day. If they owe me I do my taxes as soon as possible. I do my own filing and with practice it becomes easier as the years go by.

It sounds very much like taxes in the United States, except our year begins Jan. 1 and our tax deadline is April 15. There is always something missing and the paperwork just gets more and more complicated.

Hello, Professor Our deadline in my country is every April 15. I would have liked to file in advance but since I hire the services of an accountant, it is up to her when she could file it. Just to help her, I would submit to her whatever she needs at least weeks before the deadline. I get lost in the income tax return form so I found it easier and more convenient to have an accountant do it for me. Have a nice day!

Our taxes in the United States are due by the 15th of April every year, but my husband and myself usually do our well in advance because we want to get our return money back (the sooner the better). I do ours at home with the help of a software program called Turbo Tax. In addition to doing our own taxes, I will typically also do my mother's and my little sister's because it is easy to do with the software and it also makes buying the software worth the money that we have to pay.
