Lack of sleep yields more dreams

Have you observe it in yourself? Whenever I do not get enough sleep, like 6 hours or less, or when it's difficult to fall asleep initially, I seem unable to fall into a deep sleep, so my dreams (not necessarily bad ones) seem to be numerous and very vivid. It could be our consciousness somehow floats to the surface and we are able to remember the dreams. Do you dream often and is it because you sleep late or not have enough sleep?

I've always thought that you only remember the dreams that you wake up while dreaming them, so it would stand to reason that if you wake up several times, you would remember more dreams, and they would be more vivid. I learned that we dream about 6 or 7 dreams a night, but only remember those we wake up while dreaming it.

I wanted to add...there have been dream studies conducted that show that we must dream to get a restful sleep. In those studies, those who were not allowed to dream became very tired and did not feel as though they slept.

That was not the propose of the studies. They simply show that we need to dream in order to get quality sleep. Just because you don't remember them doesn't mean that you didn't dream.

We can't control whether we dream or not, neither can we choose to wake up at the right moment. The studies may be informative but did they propose any way to improve quality of sleep? I.e, allow us to dream more and sleep better?

I don't know if I have more dreams when I'm too tired, maybe I just wasn't able to remember them. For me, I belive it's the other way around, my dreams are vivid when I have enough sleep and when I sleep seven to eight hours a day. Anyone has an explanation for this?

Seems like all of us usually have dreams when we sleep, the difference being whether we remember them. I can't recall remembering dreams when I sleep enough because I feel refreshed then and am ready for a new day. I would also like to hear some sharing from others.

It could be you are more alert.

Maybe I have dreams if I sleep enough because I am more active and aware that I could be dreaming...

i hardly have a dream when i am sleeping and when i am dream, i will forget it as soon as i wake up... i find out that even when i have enough and a good sleep, sometimes i also can have a dream... so i don't really know how to answer your question because i can dream anytime but it is very seldom... take care and have a nice day...

Yes I think we can have dreams whether we have a good sleep or not, I'm trying to find out whether there's a link between the body's tiredness and the probability of having more dreams. Sometimes, at the moment when we first wake up, we can still remember remnants of our dreams but as we get caught up with the day's activities, these will be forgotten completely. Thanks for your response and have a nice day too.

yes, definitely i get this a lot, I can't sleep very long time and when I do, The next thing I know is that I'm already waking up. This happens to me in very short naps you know, dreams are very clear and it sometimes feel true, And there were times that I even tell myself that this is just a dream, because I felt like I was very awake although i am really sleeping.

Hi ivy, I have similar experiences. I know I'm in a dream but I can't make myself wake up. I can even tell the person in the dream that, hey, you are not real, you are just in my dream. When I woke up, I feel very strange saying that....hahaha

I noticed that I tend to dream more often than not when I am extremely tired. Strange how i've never noticed this before. I could take advantage of this and try a little lucid dreaming if I were willing to stay up at all hours of the night.

It is better to follow our biological clock and sleep at regular hours. Have you heard that 11pm-3am is the time for our vital organs to rest and regenerate and that is the period we should be sleeping. We don't want to force our organs to do overtime.

hmmm i have dreams at all times... but i've noticed that i dreamed more when i sleep longer... when i slept late or doesn't have enough sleep... i dream less... is this abnormal..it seems that mine is the exact opposite as yours... =)
• Singapore

I don't think that's abnormal, it could be you don't remember your dreams, or you fall into a really deep sleep even though it may be short

they say that we dream 4-7 times a day or per sleep. Just that we don't remember all of them.. So i think it's normal that you have lots of dreams. or maybe it's true that lack of sleep yields more dreams. :)

I remember I read a book several years ago. It said that after we fell asleep, we have dream period and non-dream period. Each period lasted about 90 minutes. They appeared alternately. If we woke up in the dream period, we could remember what we dreamed, if not, we woke up in the non-dream period, we would not remember anything, that would be a night without dream. It seems what you said doesn't fit this theory at all. But for me, I only find dreams can cause a low sleep quality, I haven't observed low sleep quality or short sleep time can cause many dreams.

Very informative as usual qianyun...you are very learned. I hope I always wake in the dream period when I have good dreams and vice versa I am not trying to form a theory here but it's something I have observed in myself recently. Maybe I can start collecting data from the responses and come up with a proper theory.

actually can't remember any distinctive dreams. The frightening ones are those in which I am being chased around. The more pleasant ones although pleasant I kinda forgotten.

Do you have more dreams when you are tired or sleep less than what you need? I have memories of some very nice ones which I would like to recall often

I have problems with sleep too, i fall asleep when i got to bed, and i sleep 5-6 hours, and then i wake up, without beeing disturbed. And i have so many nightmares, because of this restless sleep, i don`t understand why.

Sounds like you have a hectic daytime life, and when you sleep, your mind is still active or worried about what's happening, so you can't sleep properly. Sleep is a major ingredient to good health, so it's better you do something about it before it disrupts your life. Maybe you can listen to some soothing music before you go to bed and not do mylot too much.

Yes I have noticed this too. If I sleep for long like 8-10 hours I don't seem to dream at all but if I take a nap or something I seem to have a dream that even lasts longer and feel more intense I am almost aware that I'm dreaming. You'd think if you slept longer dreams would also last longer :P Seems the opposite way. Also I don't know if this happens to others but sometimes when I'm dreaming and I wake up for a few minutes (maybe to go to the bathroom to do my business) and go straight back to sleep, sometimes (usually actually, this happened to me yesterday too) my dream will continue either where it left off or it had a similar context to the dream before I woke up. I love dreaming... :D Everybody should dream. Sometimes in my dream, I am working very hard to save my life, when I wake up from it 'oh so it was just a dream what a waste of energy' rofl :D I seem to have weirder dreams when I sleep shortest probably because all sorts of junk is going through my conscious and subscious brain.

I had experienced dreams that continue also...seems like part 1, part 2, part 3 and final episode lol I'm happy to dream nice dreams but for those where I was being chased or trying to achieve something but it is just out of grasp, it could be quite frustrating. When you take a short nap, you are conscious that you have to wake soon, so there could be a lot of brain activity and thus there are a lot of dreams.
