Found in the trash

So, I'm not too apt to go thru the dumpsters at Maggiepie's place, but this morning I saw a wire dog crate piled on top of one of them. Of course I stopped, finished breaking it down and loaded it in my car... Not because I need one, but because I'm always seeing them "WANTED" on freecycle. So, when I got home tonight, I posted it - and **SHAZAM!!!** I had 2 offers in almost as many minutes after it posted. Well, the first one got it, or will when she picks it up, she said she's on her way - I did warn freecycle it needed some cleaning and TLC, but what can you expect for FREE???

Sounds like a nice deal. I am not familiar with freecycle but will definately look it up. I have a friend that is always looking up free stuff on Craigslist and has picked up bricks and some plants for his yard...and I'm sure some other things as well. Another little resource to keep in mind...thanks!

I haven't seen any carriers, and this is the first crate, but I do kind of keep my eye on the trash around the end of the month when people move out (I got a lot of cans today too!)

wow, freecycle seems like a great site. Unfortunately, I don't think that is applicable here in our country. It would be great if someone would think of doing something like that. At least people get to help those who are less fortunate with the things they are willing to throw away.

Hi ElicBxn wow that freecycle sounds so good, I should get on that occasionaly as I have a bunch of books given to me that I really do not like, and I am an avid reader too, but they just do not grab me'but I am sure a studious type might like them. They would have to come here and pick them up but free is free. Maybe I could find something I needed too but I am handicapped in that I don't drive and have no car anyway. he he.

Generally speaking, the giver expects the object to be picked up at the home (or business) by the receiver - so you might have to make sure if you give anything they know they will have to come in and get them, most things are left on porches and the like - I waited because I had come clamps that had come off and I wanted to be sure they got them

I haven't really heard of freecycle but my Aunt gets tons of thing from her local dump's "SWAP SHOP" people bring in their perfectly good items that they just don't want anymore and they put them in this area of the dump and others can come daily if they want and see if there is anything they can use. You are such a sweetie for seeing the need that someone else is sure to have and taking the time to break that thing down and bring it home and list it.. and care for and rescue all those kitties... I nominate you for sainthood!

that's cool - look online for a Freecycle in your area - I'm picking up some tea today... still sealed, but the woman is avoiding caffeine because she's pregnant....

she's been okay... not great, but not bad, just not up to a lot of sitting and then she "wastes" her time doing political things and games instead of mylotting!

that is just awesome that you seen something of use and saved it from the dump! It was even nicer that even though you couldn't use it, you knew you could find someone who does. The freecycle program is a great one. I've gotten rid of a lot of things as well as have gotten many needed things over the years. Marsha

Hey why not? We see plenty on and off curbside around here. Only problem is I don't know the other neighborhoods trash day other than the one by my DC's school. So in order to save my kids some embarassment I only get stuff that's not close to anyone we know of home. But hey why not... put it on freecycle or even curbside w/ a sign that says "FREE" someone will grab it. Apartment complexes are good places for diving! My Mom suplimented her income by diving. She'd sell some stuff at rummage sales & the can's and other recyclables she'd take to the junk yard for $.

I'm not willing to do a lot, but when I see something that I know has been requested and requested - I'll grab it - unless its obviously broken beyond casual repair

What a nice deed. You could have just left it there but now people who really need it will be able to get one for free. Of course I am sure there's something they can use CLR maybe? to get the rust out.

Some people throw everything away. I have a friend that throws all kinds of stuff out when someone could use it. She will say "If you want it come today and get it, or it'll be out in the trash tonight." Some of the things she throws out have never been used. What a waste of money not to mention what she is doing to the landfills. I guess that is why some people go thru the trash. You never know when you are going to find something you or someone else can use.

I'd guess they probably either don't have the dog any more, or were moving and didn't want to take it because it was a bit broken - as in some of the joiners were gone - but that's an easy enough fix

HMMMM! I have heard of free cycle but never looked at the site. There is just nothing wrong with looking into a dumpster. I am not a dumpster diver. To dirty for me. Although I have lived at these one apartments in 2007 when my daughter was three and my son was two. There I found next to the dumpster a pink and white toy box. Just needed to be whipped down from the dirt. My kids were needing a toy box. A month later, my now EX, and I were coming back home and spotted a pair of boots. To are amazement, they were Justin boots, brown leather, bran new looking, not even a scratch on them nor the have the sole looked as if anyone has ever worn them and they just happen to be my now Ex's size. That was a great find. That same year it was three weeks before Christmas and still hadn't even gone shopping for the kids due to finances. We were taking a walk that evening around the apartment and came upon another dumpster that had a kids couch that fold out. It had one tiny tear in the arm. Other than that, it looked clean. We took it home, washed the pillow inside, sprayed it with Ferbreeze and sowed the tiny tare. It bran new. My kids had that couch for five years. In November of 2008 I moved into Government Subsidized Housing with only a rocking chair, TV, air mattress computer, computer desk and my clothes. A month later I found at the dumpster a Tall White TV stand that only had a little dust on it and a coffee table that had some scratches. I refinished the coffee table making it look bran new. Two weeks after those finds, I found someone getting ride of couch only because the fabric on the sides were coming undone from them stabling it together. Other then that, it was in great condition except one little tear in the seat that I just sewed and turn the cushion over. I mended the ends myself, went to Wal-Mart to get some heavy duty fabric and made my own couch cover using the sewing machine at my church out quilting ladies use. Amazing how you can find tings at a dumpster, on the street, or even as you said, at free cycle and make it look brand new again. ~HERE'S TO DUMPSTER FINDS AND FREE CYCLE~ :)

You've done really well... I haven't lived in a big complex, and I have seen some stuff that could be salvaged, but I'm not willing to do it and until this cage, the only stuff I've rescued has been empty cans and food... oh, and then there was the mattress

I hate to see perfectly good things thrown away. We have a neat place at our recycling center to put things like that, and others come pick them up. All kinds of things. I have two really nice storage units I got that way.

I kid you not, I'm amazed at how much stuff goes out at these complexes - and while it needed some TLC it was still quite workable - granted, most of the furniture is worn out, at the same time, they could be fixed most of the time! and instead - off to the land fill - that's why I try to get over to get the cans before they get "cleaned up" and into the dumpster

Wow! How nice of you and now nice for her! It sounds like you were meant to find that crate, bring it home and find it a new home. Wouldn't it be nice if everything in life went that smoothly? Wow! If we still lived in our old neighborhood, I'd want to do the same as you, except I wouldn't have to go through any dumpsters. It was an upper-middle class neighborhood. The people there had money. Some of them apparently had so much money they felt they could be wasteful. When they got tired of something, they'd replace it and put the old, perfectly good, one out for the trash pickup. I couldn't believe some of the things they'd throw away. Our next door neighbors got tired of their deck furniture. I'm talking redwood chaise lounge, chairs and table! These things aren't cheap! But, there they were, at the curb to be hauled off as trash when they were in perfect condition. The only thing missing was the cushions but they can be bought anywhere. I did think that was odd, that the cushions weren't with the trash. Most people would be replacing cushions and keeping the furniture, wouldn't you think? I'm very glad to be out of that neighborhood. I can't stand people who waste money but these people were even worse... they weren't donating them to charity or even taking them to a second-hand store. Maybe the people who owned this redwood furniture had some kind of people phobia, though, because they'd have someone come to their house to wash, wax and clean the inside of their cars instead of washing them themselves or taking the cars to a carwash. They'd have landscapers come to throw down some grass seed in the tiny patches of front yard we all had. Still, they could have had Goodwill or Salvation Army pick up that furniture. Unbelievable waste! Of course, one man's waste is another man's treasure. You could have furnished an entire house with what those people threw away. Sad, very sad.

That was so great of you to do that! How many people would take the time to do that just to give it away for free! I have taken stuff from trash that is good, too. In fact, my TV, a big one mind you, is from a restaurant/bar closing and they were just tossing these in the trash. It worked fabulous, just needed to be really cleaned well. It is a very nice tv with closed caption, automatically, when you put the tv on mute. I only had to buy a universal remote for it. My dining room table was trash. I picked it up and refinished it. I have many things like that. Trash/treasure, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

That was so nice of you, knowing that someone might need it. The dump close to our house sometimes has really nice stuff that people just throw out when they don't want it...we got a super nice trash can for the bathroom, one of those that you step on to get the lid to open. Its stainless steel and looked brand new! We also got what seems to be a brand new camping chair!!! Crazy what people throw out!
