I don't want to compare our movies to other country because I know that we had the best director here in the Philippines but one thing I always noticed about our movies is that poor special effects that looks obviously an special effects. I'm not graduate of any adobe course but I did learn it all by myself do you know that those special effects that they used in our TV shows and even in those movies can easily be done using Adobe after effect, Maya, and Studio Max and Sony Vegas. There some aspects missing to make this more realistic and that is what I don't know. I myself did an special effects and seems exactly the same on those movies we have so meaning I'm not a pro but I can do it so what more about a pro can do? Do you agreed that our movies special effects need more improvements? And also those monster looking prosthetics their look really fake and need improvements.

I think special effects are improving as of now but not like special effects in movies. I've always wonder how they can do good effects and magic in tv commercials than movies. I think they still holding on to their budget. They should improve on that to gain more class A viewers.

I noticed that too, is this means that those commercials have more budget for compare to their movies? If you will see the commercial of Celine you will be amazed of the robot and the child so how I wonder shy this commercials able to make something like that but our movie can't provide us the effects that has a better quality.

I think so! I think they spend more in special effects rather than commercial model so that people will patronize their product.

I totally agree with you. We have many great and talented visual artists here in the Philippines. In fact some of the main crew in the movie Wall-e were Filipinos. Perhaps the problem is in the producers. I mean, when they make movies, how long do they do it until they finish one? are they giving the sfx and animation personnel enough time to fine tune their work?
Another thing is the originality of the concept. Most of the concepts they induce in our local movies are not original (even the stories are not original)

Maybe it's because they are underpaid. If I had that skill set why would I work for less? Besides no amount of CGI special effects will save a crappy movie plot from vexing audience. And if they can't afford to have a good story what are the chances that they can afford quality effects? I'm proud that we have talents but sadly we lack in showcasing them locally.

@iluvusabado
maybe that is also one of the reason why our film industry is falling down rapidly.

I definitely agree. We have to make our movies more realistic. I think that's why our movies are more on comedy and drama because of that. Horror and sci-fi movies are...you know what I mean.

There was once a Filipino movie that I have seen many many years ago that really did great in doing the prosthetics, I think the title was "Salamangekero".
At that time I thought the prosthetic works were comparable to the alien characters of Starwars, then again it was long time ago.I guess I have to see it again.

Movies effects in the Philippines was really poor, i suggest that they should stop using effects if they cannot make it look like realistic, because they look like they was trying hard.

Yes, I do agree with you. The special effects in our movies are far beyond as compared to the ones we see in other countries. I am a fan of horror movies but when I watch Philippine horror movies, I would instead laugh considering that the special effects are very poor and instead of being afraid, I just laugh. Well, I think we have the talent but perhaps the budget is lacking. We tend to make movies overnight as compared to movies abroad that is well budgeted.

I agree. I believe that it is about time that we put up a school or a course in special effects considering the fact that it is a multi-billion dollar industry. We have good story tellers, but the thing is we do not have enough tool to use to tell our stories effectively. We want to make latex or silicon masks but there's no supplier for these materials and if there is one it is too expensive. Filipino talents in special effects can be found in YouTube why not try looking for them there for starters. With regards to software, there is a 3d software that can produce decent 3D special effects and it is free! It is called Blender 3D (I've never mastered it, but you can watch free movies online that used the said software). This also reminded me of an interview with a commercial director who used a motion control camera for a shampoo brand. The interviewer was surprised to learn that the technology that they thought was high tech (i think it was from Balitang K) was used in filming Star Wars back in '78!

Hey rhodz!
I totally agree with you. The Philippine special effects in movies and tv are almost always hilarious though there are some which need polishing and which we could at least say are okay enough for the children..:)
Compared with the Philippine movies before, it has improved but if we compare it with international films, ours are quite a shame.. :) Well, maybe because of the budget. I wouldn't put the blame entirely on our lack of talent. Its definitely because the funds are limited which lead to the resources being limited as well.
No offense to my fellow Pinoys here but it is a reality.

True! I just wonder why there are many IT graduates and many people hobbying the adobe CS and such, still the teleseryes and shows we've been watching are quite unimpressive.

Philippines special effects have prospered throughout the years. Basing it on the movies done as of the 80's and 90's compared to movies done recently. I don't belittle our movie effects makers. Due to the fact they have surpassed their previous effect style. Improvements is always seen on every new movie shown. However they still continue to push through in order to be known worldwide.

I do agree with you. Our movies here really have poor special effects. They should realize that special effects are what catches they eye of the viewers. The story may be good but the effects are not. Producers should at least try to improve their special effects so that those movies won't be a sore to the eyes. haha

I don't agree with you because phillipines is a country of natural things...
Everything will be beatiful ther...
Therefore the movies also have to be natural only...

I could not agree with you more about this. Our movies' special effects needs a lot of re hauling, retooling, and additional upgrades. It turns me off everytime i catch a scene in a TV series or movie when that movie had a terrible "SPECIAL" effects. It was supposed to be something special but it turned out to be just an ordinary effect as compared to other countries' products. Im sorry if i have to compare but i hope this will be another wake up call to our movie industry. Im not saying that i have high expectations but all i want is for our "SPECIAL" effects to be more competitive. ^^

They should just avoid the special effects because it ruins the story unless its a comedy, where our props and effects are really not that important. We'll its not all about the software but the editors and CGI filming that ruins it. I can even make hd movies using windows moviemaker, just a little tweaking and you'll get a good special effect. I think, film makers should just avoid using them if they suck or at least do some research and bring out the best of it. This is probably the reason why our film industry is failing to get our own people to watch.

Philippine movies special effects really really needs improvements. I really can't imagine that these movies even get awards from award giving bodies in the Philippines even they are very much way far behind the quality movie effect. Effects are even copies or borrowed from popular movies like dragons, monters, dwarfs, etc.

i agree. we have poor quality in special effects. i myself can do some of the effects i use final cut pro. maybe our best editors are not compensated well so they pursue to go abroad.
but we are good doing heavy drama. i especially like star cinema movies. :)

I totally agree to your observations... I also wonder why Philippine movies don't invest much on special effects..

i agree... them Filipino movie makers should start doing their own thing and not imitate Hollywood, we'll just crash and burn when it comes to the special effects thing. i also had my share with movie editing and it's very hard and irritating. i don't think those people from the west are using these programs anymore, i think they have more advanced ones or the person in charged of this has his/her own software and has an access to a multi-million dollar equipment...
