Here's what I use personally... orbitdownloader.
It's a downloadmanager with a tool called GrabPro that can save youtube videos (or any other video streaming site that renders video in .flv .mov format.
And the good thing is... being a download manager... you are not required to have a fast internet connection. The download is broken into several files thus making the download faster and optimizes your internet bandwidth.
But if you hate installing software... then just simply do this... after opening the video on youtube, go to your temporary internet files folder and then search for an .flv or .mov file which has created/modified date that is equal to the date that you have watched the video; copy it then paste in a convenient folder, then rename it as you wish.

I'm the kind of person who hates new installing softwares because they clutter my PC. I have tried copying the the .flv file from the Temporary Internet Files folder before (the location of the folder is Userprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files in Windows XP) and it didn't work. Windows complains that the file is being used by another program and when I close my browser the file is deleted.
If you use Firefox browser though you can copy the Firefox cache file in the cache folder. To find the location of the cache folder just type about:cache in your address bar. You can tell which file you want to copy from its size and the created date/time stamp. Copy the file to another folder and add the .flv extension. You can then play the flv file.

the best thing for downloading youtube video's is to install INTERNET DOWNLOAD MANAGER into your computer it automatically captures the youtube media stream into .flv files and if the video is in HD quality it captures it in .mp4 format .
If you are unable to find the full version of Internet download manager (IDM) then PM me i will give you the link because i can't post the link here because of the rules .
Happy mylotting .

Hello Angebelle. Youtube have tweaked their system recently and blocked most downloading software so most of them won't work now. My husband now uses YoutubeDownloaderHD, it's free and it's easy to use.

I'm using realplayer, and that allows me to download videos, pratically from any sites, except some others.. haha =D
Realplayer is good, but sometimes it can be kinda slow in downloading if the files are too big.. PLus, there are lots of upgrades in realplayer which can be quite troublesome at times.. haha

Hello angelbelle....
If you want to speedily download youtube video then the best application around is "Internet Download Manager". But it will take a much of computer speed, so after you download from it just manually stop it from task manager......

Based from the answers given here there are a lot of ways. I prefer those that would not require me to download and install a software.
There are sites that will let you convert Youtube videos by just pasting the URL of the youtube video that you like to save on their page's box. One is, (and the one that I use is) SAVETUBE.COM. It's easy to use and it saves your files as .FLV
But there are other sites like savetube that can convert youtube video in other file format that you may prefer.

First off, you just want the FLV or you want a converted file?
Firefox has plenty of addons like download helper that can help you out. If you don't want to install anything, you can use a site that will do it for you like clipnabber, tubeminator, keepvid, and splandoo.
Hope that helps.

Aside from downloading the Youtube Downloader, there are some sites that enables you to download videos from Youtube. The one that I'm using now is www.savevid.com. You can actually select the file format that suits you. It has flv, mp4 and other formats that would be compatible to the gadget you're using.

The easiest way for me is to go to this site http://keepvid.com/ and copy and paste the youtube ulr on to the space provided in the site and that's it, it saves the video for you. You may experiment with zoom player free edition to play the flv files. FLV files are the format in which the video files are downloaded from youtube.com. If you have any problems let me know...might take you on a online tutorial to get the video as mentioned above.
