When I was a kid there used to be several drive in movie theaters in our area. We used to watch cartoons and travelogues before the movies. Then there would be one movie. Then there would be an intermission when people would go to the snack bar to buy more pop corn and soft drinks. Then the second movie. Finally the slow attempt to drive out the one exit along with every other car trying to do the same thing.
To hear the movies we would have a window open a bit to hang a speaker on it. Hopefully there wouldn't be too many bugs flying in the partly open window.

I remember them, even drove to them! I would sit on the hood of the car with the speaker on the hood next to me and lean on the windshield - because I'm so short and the car was built for a man, I had to have booster pillows (they even sold them special back then) so I would use those to give me some padding!
It wasn't too bad during the spring and fall - but I do live in Texas, so summer was uncomfortable at best - but you could see 1 to 3 movies for a fraction of the indoor theaters!

there are no more around here - I can pretty well point out where all the ones I remember were at, and one still has the marquee up - tho its now a storage place
radio service? not while I went - but I did stop going in the mid-1970's, too little time/money/interest and I think the only drive in left was too far for me to go to

dude dont you think that watchin that much tv would be bad for your freakin brain man! holy crap and then you would have to spend like a billion dollars to pay for all the fat foods that you consume!

Back when I was a kid the movies and the snack foods were a lot cheaper. Sometimes 2 movies for only a few dollars for a car full of family.

thats so crazy to see how the times have changed! when you think about it, spending money on all the unhealthy foods at movie theatres ends up costing more than the movie tickets themselves ahahah, and yea the price of the tickets are crazy too!, a few dollars would get you a free trip back to your car nowadays lol :) thats cool though man, thanks for the info

Here in Iowa ther are still four of those left. I have been to two of them and they both showed a double feature. Now though they have it where they send the sound into your radio and you wouldn't even have to get out if you didn't want to. They are fun and I would love to try and go to the other two.

I guess in rural area like Iowa there might still be drive ins for some years to come if people continue to go to them.
In our area there are several multiplex cinemas that people use when they want to see movies outside the home. The prices are pretty high and of course you only get one movie for your money.

Drive Ins never really caught on over here in the UK, unpredictable weather. But I remember as a kid going to the cinema and before the main film started there would usually either be a movie short or a cartoon and there was always an intermission where a woman would come around with a tray of ice-cream, drinks and sweets. I miss those days.

Bad weather does cause problems for drive in theaters. Sometime when we were at a drive in down on Cape Cod during the summer the fog would roll in and you would no longer be able to see the screen.
If it started to rain you either had to stick your head out the window or turn on the windshield wipers.

I remember seeing movies at the drive ins when I was a little girl. We would have to sit that huge speaker on the door. I also remember loving the concession food.
They still have one in general area. Instead of using a huge speaker there is a local radio station that you tune into to listen to the movie.

Your comment and some of the others makes me hungry for the concession food that was served in those drive ins. As I remember it was tastier than much of what is served at concession stands in various place these days.

I hope one day you get a chance to go to a drive in with your family or some friends when you are visiting some place that has one.

We had one. Don't you miss those? All the town kids getting together and having fun, seeing how many you could sneak in? If it was to hot to sit in the car, bring the lawn chairs. We popped our own corn so as not to pay the price at the concession stand. Did you ever get lost trying to find your car after going to the bathroom and accidently get into the wrong one? lol My kids just can't believe that people would do that, go to the drive in to watch a movie from the comfort of your car. When they seen Greese, they all asked me if drive ins where real and did the car hops really wear skates. They woouldn't have believe the car hops but we did have a sonic drive in for a short time that they worked at. They couldn't believe that concept either.

In my area they actually still show two movies and I love it because it's like to movies for the price of one. You just got to love drive ins they are so much fun and I love to go and buy snacks at the snack bar during the intermissions and to go to the bathroom too. I am glad that they have intermissions.

I live in New England and have heard that there one or two Drive Ins up in a resort area an hour or two drive from here. For those who live there or are on a vacation up that way they can have fun either re-living the "old days" or being introduced to something new if they've seen one before.

Ah.....those were the days.
I think that was the main source of intertainment when we were teens. It was close by, and relatively cheap. I say realatively because although the prices were low by today's standards, money was tight then, too.
We used to go to "buck a car load", and we would all have to chip in to get the buck.
Lots of dates at the drive-in, and probably lots of babies made, too
I remember my date and I falling to sleep one night in the drive-in...some guy came tapping on the car to wake us up.
They are almost all gone now. I only know of one anywhere near where I live where there used to be six.

Drive ins were really great for people with small children, since when the children got sleepey, they could just go to sleep in the back seat of the car or if they wanted to talk, etc. they didn't bother the other people in the cinema. I can remember a drive in movie theatre near my grandparents home. I went there a couple of times with my cousins and it was a lot of fun, but that theatre is no longer there. Come to think of it, I can't remember having seen a drive in theatre in a long time. I guess they have really fallen out of fashion.

Yup, the drive in was good for when kids were small and the second movie wasn't that interesting for the children. They could try to stay awake but sometimes not succeed. Then Mom or Dad would put a blanket over them and let them doze.

The drive-in about 25 minutes away from where I live shows two movies. Although I haven't been there in awhile.

If the price is right and there are movies playing that you and a friend would like to see maybe you should make the 25 minute drive some nice evening.

There is still a drive-in theatre in my area. I went to it with my parents when I was a kid and we watched Swiss Family Robinson then E.T. The sound came over the radio not through speakers. They still open it up in the summer and play movies there. It is five dollars a car load and there have been people who sneaked in in the trunk and set up lawn chairs to watch the movie lol. They get creative.

I've heard of teens who would have one or two drive into the drive-in theater and then have 3 or 4 more kids get out of the trunk to see the movies.
There was also a drive in theater near here that was next to a cemetery and I heard that some teens would watch the movies while in the graveyard and listen to the sound on their radio. That drive in is now a park and ride for commuters who leave their car there and get a ride into the city or airport.
