Hi kilani~ I can tell you plenty about Serotonin and the lack
of it! I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder.
You can't always tell by looking at someone that they are
depressed. The symptoms go alot deeper than that and are alot
more serious. People who lack serotonin and norepinephrine
can become depressed because they are lacking these chemicals
in their brain. And yes, there are many medications that can
help or "fix" these problems and they are called Anti-depressants!
And when the doctors find the right ones they can fix the
chemical imbalance help the patient get back their "normal"
feelings again! I know that the meds that I have been given
help me alot. I am not "cured", but I am alot better than I
was before!

Yes, serotonin does play a big part on our mental state. There are different ways to tell if a person is depressed. Some symptoms would be if they don't seem happy or never smile. Maybe they always look sad. Usually very depressed people lose all interest in social activities like going out and being with friends and family. I really do believe in medication helping people with depression. There is no reason for someone to suffer like that if they are going through a really tough time with depression. Anyone who is severely depressed needs to get help right away. There are also many websites to help determine whether a person is depressed with a listing of different symptoms.
