Would you choose to live in a huge house or a small one?

I grew up living in what I think is a huge house. Well I really think it's huge. There are two floors, on the first floor, there is a living room with a size of two typical size of living room, kitchen, the master's bedroom is also located there with one bathroom. On the second floor, there are two bathrooms and 5 rooms. But there are only 4 of us in the family, my dad, mom, me and my brother. Plus when you get out of the kitchen, you'll most likely get to an "office" with two floors. We also have a garage, where most likely can fit 4 typical size SUV's. Seriously this is a huge house. We got it as an inheritance from my grandmother. My mom thinks it's too big for our family. So she was thinking of renovating it. Making it smaller, just enough for our family. Then make the half to two typical size house, enough for two small size families and have it rented. I think it's a good idea since economy in the Philippines is in bad shape. I do want a smaller house too. But I fear that I have to adjust much because I grew up living in a huge house. How about you my fellow mylotters, would you choose to live in a huge house or a small one even if you just have a small size family?

I don't really want to live in a huge house. I prefer a reasonable space. But, I do like to be living in a two-storey house, so that would have the privacy for the family members, and also would be less noisy in the individual rooms. In fact, I am now living in a two-storeyed house, and I am very happy there.

"reasonable space" is good to hear. I think that will be really nice for our house. Privacy is really important for me. Also quietness/peacefulness.

For me the size of the house doesn't matter as long as you're comfortable with it.

I think what your mom wants to do is wise.It is a pain to maintain a huge house. Our house too is large and difficult to maintain.I feel that it is better to have a medium sized house with 2 or 3 bedrooms so that one is able to accommodate guests too when the need arises..

I think medium size is good. I guess for my middle sized house would be 4-5 bedrooms. 1 master bedroom for my parents, 1 for me, 1 for my brother and I guess 1 or 2 for a guest room. But not too big rooms, just the average size. I believe I have a huge room though. Thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

wow. THAT IS A BIG HOUSE. i THINK YOUR MOM WOULD BE SMART TO DO THAT. U are right about the economy being bad, it sure is here. The only downfall would be the renters, hopefully she'd get good ones. I live in what would be considered a small house by many's standard but it's all i need & more than i need sometimes. Happy tues to u.

It was an inheritance from my dad's parents. When I was still a kid, we live with my grandmother and my dad's siblings. Plus my dad's side is "rich". Well rich before, I mean the old times. But now, we're in the average. That is why the house is really big. We had troubles with renters before. So my mom make sure that she totally knows the family. Thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

I have always dreamt of having a huge house, although I think it's really not practical, I think I would go for just the perfect size with regards on how big or how small my future family would be. My only requirement for my house is a huge garden where I can relax and where my future children could play. It has always been a dream of mine to have my own garden.

I would love to have a garden too. My mom wants one too. She loves orchids. I think having a garden is not only good for a house but also for the Earth. It is quite rare to have one in a city. Thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

I wouldn't want a huge house because of the money it would cost to maintain it. I would just like an average sized house that has 2 floors. When I'm upset or angry or something and need to get away from people I don't want to have to leave the house. I like to have a floor between whoever I'm angry at sometimes.

Yeah I totally agree, it takes a lot of money. My mom have to save a lot to have it renovated. Plus maintenance is really expensive. The renovation would not only take almost half of what my mom earns but also will take years. I fear it would take years because it is really huge, and there will be like 3 houses in one huge house.

It depends how many members do you have in your family. In your case you are only 4, I think it is better to live in a small house. Simple life is much better for me. Rather in a huge house you will have a hard time cleaning and not all rooms will be accommodated and there is a big chance that ghost will live in a quiet place.I'm not kidding and I'm not scaring you. Based on my experience.

lol. No worries about the ghost thingy. I have experiences with them. I have not seen one and I wouldn't like to see one in our house. But there are things that happens in our house that are unexplainable. And there are a lot of those experiences. Thanks for the response and happy mylotting!

I have always wanted a big house like that with some acreage. I have lived in some but as a renter and regretted when we had to move for one reason or another. I hate small cramped and crowded houses with little room or storage. I wish I had someone leave me a house like you just described I would so love it.

To choose to live in a big house or a small house, it all depends on personal preference. As for me, I would like neither a too big or a too small one, but one with adequate size. Only a few people living in a very big house is too luxurious, especially in this time of economic depression. If I'm in possession of a house as huge as yours, I would certainly get someone rent some rooms.

Hi, trishasantos. I think that, a house that has enough of bedrooms for five family members would be fine for me. I don't want my house to be so big. I just want it to be big enough for all of us to live in. I want enough of room and space. Your house is a big house, I admit.

A big house. I grew up as part of a large family - I have four siblings. I always had to share a room and I hated it. After growing up and moving out, I had roommates to deal with because I thought it would be more cost effective to share the rent and utilities. WRONG. Anyway, as a result, I am very conscious of having space and I also feel it is important for each family member to have their own room. We have a 4 bedroom house and we used to have 3 kids at home, so it was perfect. We now only have the little one, but I would still not want any fewer than 3 bedrooms in any house we live in. I would prefer 2 and a half baths but 2 is sufficient. As far as extras, at least a 2 car garage, sep laundry room, an office or den type area (separate from bedrooms and other living areas), a walk-in pantry, an island or bar counter in the kitchen, and a sep tub and shower in the master bath lol.

Hi trish! I think that you have been very lucky to have had the chance to live in a huge house! I lived in a normal sized house, that you would consider small. It had two floors, but only two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and two downstairs, a bathroom and a livingroon, kitchen and diningroom all on the second floor. It had a nice screened in porch and a basement so it was big enough for 4 people. I loved that house, but we only lived there for 7 years. I grew up living in an apartment most of my life so living in that house was a treat! I have been living in my apartment now for almost 30 years and would give anything to live in ever a small house.

The truth is the bigger the house the more there is to take care of. I do think if someone can't afford to hire help they should only have what they can take care of on their own. Having to big of a house or to much stuff is not easy on the mind. The simpler life is the better.

My family can afford a helper, but it's not easy to get someone who is trustworthy enough. But I totally agree with you. It takes a lot of cleaning to clean it. It takes days and it's not really fun.

Its all about what you can afford, I think that because your mother wants to make it smaller so that other ppl can also live in the space you guys don't need its a great and generous idea. However, personally for me I come from a big family 3 brothers and 4 sisters, mother and father, so we have a big house and the space is very necessary. For you guys not so much, but don't be selfish or worry about adjusting too much you probably won't even notice. Just be greatful, you have a roof over your head.

A small house will do to me, trisha. It would be less in maintenance. :-) If I have a car, I make sure that I still have a garage. The house may be small yet it's full packed inside. :)

I would love and am dreaming of living in a huge house one day. A mansion with 6-7 bedrooms (including rooms for guests and my future children), a big kitchen, a prayer room, bathrooms (with a huge bathroom in my room), a prayer room, a pool, a garden and a big garage. I dont really know why I want to have a huge house, but I just want it.

The bigger house you have the bigger bill you would pay. I know how fabulous it is to live in a big house but come to think of it how much money you could save if you would renovate it and make some apartments. I think that is a wonderful idea being practical. Anyway you can also divide the house with your brothers and sisters to have your own house or room rather than renting into condo. It is a good start if your planning to settle down

I will choose a small house because I am very practical person. Having a huge space is not easy to maintain. A small house is easy to maintain, not consuming too much electricity so you will save a lot of money. And also your maid will be happy if she is not taking care of big house.

If you have a big house my friend then its good for you but my friend to decorate a big house for any occasion is very difficult it is also very difficult to clean a good house. so it is better to have a big house if you have a big family.my friend I have a small family of 4 members and i have an appropriate house not much big nor too small.

For me, getting a house should depend on how small or big is the family--that is in terms of the size of the family and the income of whoever is the breadwinner. Comfortability is when things are just enough. You can't live comfortably in a small house when you have a big family either you can't live comfily when you got a big house provided you only have a small family--as you would be keeping up with the cleanliness of the house and the payment of electric bills and whatnot.
