Oh !! My school has ordered its students to deactivate their FB accounts

India

To what are these schools in India heading to ?? This is a total nonsense . My school has blind eyedly instructed all its students to deactivate their FB accounts before the deadline of Aug 15 which incidentally happens to be our independence day . The trends are highly contrasting - taking away students freedom on the independence day . What do you think about all this ? What would you do ? Give me some ideas and also tell me whether I should deactivate my account or not .

that's absurd, why? they can blocked their internet in their school to prevent students from logging in to facebook. but deactivating them is completely ridiculous, they have no right to meddle with the students personal things in the net. what are their reasons for this, isn't fair to begin with.

Yes letran, you are right. They can restrict us from using those sites in our school but why outside school?? They think it will improve the grades.

Deactivating account will not improve the grades . It will only increase the anger of students against the school .

hmmm i know some of my friend private their facebook to the extend that when searching of their name you would not be able to find them in facebook. you could try this method until facebook is no longer ban in your school or till you leave school. I think the only reason they want the students to delete their accounts are that student are spending too much time on facebook(maybe), that they neglect their revision.

The actual reason is not that . Reason for banning FB in our school : Some students indiscriminately accusing and teasing teachers on FB - but now all students facing a ban . And of course , FB is not used inside school , so what is the problem in using it outside the school . And the school can in no way interfere in what people actually do in FB . Because FB is something that is totally personal and the school can't take power over it . And grades are not a reason for banning FB . Even the 1st ranker uses FB so does the last ranker . So in my school , grades are no where related to FB .

Ya , I have actually made my account private and also changed my Profile pic so that no one except my friends know who I am . ( Mentality of Indian students : Do the opposite of what the school says )

I wonder which school is that...not the right thing to do taking away your independence on the independence day....What you can do is change your name and remove the name of the school if it is mentioned in FB. I am just giving you a suggestion. But also need to tell you that facebook is for people above 18 years.

What are you kidding me? That's ridiculous! How will they know if you delete your Facebook or not? You could just make it private. And Facebook has nothing to do with school they shouldn't be able to do this. What you do in your spare time outside of school is none of their business!

i wouldn't do it. that's interfering with your life outside of school. if you ask me i think your school is overstepping its boundaries.

oh my God. That's terrible. They should have not done that. But i know they have some reason for that. Maybe, Facebook greatly affects the performance of the students now in school. That's why they want them to deactivate all accounts. But if they are telling you to do this, then all you have to do is to follow. Or else, you'll be expelled.^^

Wow that is crazy. In America I do think that would be against our rights. As long as you are not on your Facebook in class or at school it shouldn't be a problem. I would check out the legality of the whole issue. Maybe have the students and their parents sign a petition, and try to get something done. This is taking away part of your freedom.

Hello about which school in india you talk of, just share the name of the state, how they know that you have a FB account? They should not interfere with this, because it is not related to school.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Professor

You must explain first why your school is doing this without knowing the reason ppl can't answer your question..

What the..?! That's ridiculous! What's the point of doing that?? I suggest you collect as many signatures as possible from your schoolmates and file a petition for allowing facebook... immediately! Of course, you should state legitimate and convincing reasons for doing so. It's a quite effective revolt tactic. ^_^

instruct all the students to deactivate their Facebook accounts? It is really an amazing thing. Obviously, it is everyone's right to open an account on Facebook, including the students in your school. So, all the teachers have no right to instructed all its students to deactivate their FB accounts, even if this action is really helpful to its students. For the students, I advise that they need to look for help from the local government because this action is against the law.

totally crazy!, well you can alway create accounts with secret identity or coded of some sort. A lot of friends i know uses alias in their facebook account, but you can no longer post lots of pictures. the best option is to challenge the legality of the schools order.

I find that a bit funny. Is there any proof that using Facebook has a direct effect on the grades of the students? Does having a Facebook account make your grades lower? Would it be possible for you to somehow make a plea in your school about it? Probably explain to them that having a Facebook account per se is not the problem but its excessive use in the school. After which present suggestions on how you can limit your usage of Facebook, like having the site blocked in your school (just the school, you can access it at home). But if there's really not much you can do, then I guess you do have to deactivate your account. But seriously, I find this weird.

Wow, that is something to hear from my country! I never thought our schools would try to do something like that. Although i never had any connection with facebook or orkut my whole school life but i see your point here. Why do they think it is necessary to do such a thing? They think they are going to see good results ordering the pupils to deactivate their facebook accounts? Don't we have internet in our homes to access them? This is shameful, lol. I don't think they can change anything with this. If anything, they thought our parents would not take care of us seeing to it that we are getting too much into facebook and all. This is something our parents can order ,but not the school principal!

hello! Why would your school instruct you to deactivate your account? If their reasons for instructing you to deactivate it is for your own good then I think you have to deactivate it. But it's your choice actually, try to weigh the consequences of deactivating it or just keeping it.

They can't tell you what you do on the Internet. The Internet is your own personal space, as it is for others, unless in the laws of India it not stated like that.

So they are saying that Facebook is the reason why their students can't improve grades and they are ordering them to deactivate their accounts, a rude thing for a school to do.
