Okay. So, there was a cow in our yard. Happens all the time, right?
All right, we live across the road from a moo cow farm. The thing is, in over three years, we've never seen any of them escape before. Maybe it's something about our yard or, well, ME. I HAVE been known to attract strays.
I've seen geese, ducks, turtles, deer, groundhogs, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, moles, voles and snakes and now I can add "cow" to our plethora of critters seen in our yard.
So, have you seen any unusual critters in your yard? If so, what were they and how did you get rid of them, assuming you did get rid of them?
I could have been perfectly happy with a cow in my yard. It would cut the grass and provide lots of fertilizer for my garden! Maybe, next time, I'll ask the owner if she can stay for awhile.

Hi Marti, you didn't say how you got rid of the cow. Is she still in your yard. I haven't seen anything strange lately in my yard. Just the usual squirrels, chipmunks, etc. However, there is a shoe in my yard. I just happen to look out my window and there is a sneaker lying under my dogwood tree, I wonder how it got there. I don't have a pet. As of now that is the strangest thing in my yard.

Ewwwww!!! Aren't babies fun? When my oldest son was a baby, he threw up in my hair and down my back. My poor baby had a nasty virus but I had to sit him down on the floor while mommy took a quick bath. (We didn't have a shower in that house.)
I can actually picture you right after that happened. LOL I also hope it never happens to you again. Once is more than enough for that kind of thing!
On another subject, I'm going in for spinal surgery in my neck sometime within the next two weeks. I have a severely herniated disc that is pinching the nerve to my right arm, causing a LOT of pain and tingling, plus my hand is almost entirely numb. The surgeon wants me in for surgery as soon as possible to prevent any further damage. I have to have all those pre-surgical tests done so they know I'm healthy enough for surgery and that will happen this week, then they'll schedule the surgery. The doctor said they'd bump someone already scheduled for surgery because he seems to be very concerned about this, saying it's bad and it will only get worse. Actually, when I saw him (last Friday) right after the MRI, the first words out of his mouth were, "I have bad news." That's not something you want to hear, ever!
But, I'll be fine. Maybe even better than before this happened.

Hi Chevee!!! I haven't seen you around in, well, forever it seems. How've you been?
The cow's mommy came and got her. She was so obedient! All her mommy had to say was, "Come on home, Dusty". Of course, she did have to get behind Dusty to make sure she went the right way, which she did. She went right back through the hole in the fence she got out from.
That's her mommy in the photo, not me. I was busy with the camera. LOL
A sneaker, huh? Well, if it's only one you don't have to worry but, if another one shows up (I actually typed 'shoes up' before I corrected it... lol) you might have little baby shoes before long. Gotta watch those stray sneakers!
I've seen plenty of shoes like that on the road. You have to wonder why there's only one and if the owner noticed it missing. If I lost a shoe, I'd go back and find it.

Oh noooooooooo, ain't no hanky panky going on here. I was holding my grandbaby the other day, and he thew up right down my bosom. I asked him why would you do that people will think I am lactating, (hope that's the way to spell it). And they will know I am too old to be having a baby because the milk coming out of my bre--t is sour. ( Get It). lol

Hiya mw,
No I can´t have anything in this Yard (garden) anyway because the fence is way too high for any animal to get over it.
Further into the Countryside I have seen People have Sheep in their Front Garden eating the Grass and also a Horse a great big one. I´m sure the Horse or the Sheep did´nt mind a change of pasture either.
Have seen Goats too in the back and front Garden and they will chew through most things that´s about the most exciting thing I have seen.
Oh once we had a real live Bull run up our Stairs it got through the high Wooden Fence that was there for safety it ran up the Stairs right to the top floor and then all the way down again it meant no harm it was just too busy running away to be bothered with any of us.
That´s about it.
My Husband has had Kangaroos in his front Garden years ago that was in Australia (grin)

Wow! I don't know if I would like seeing a bull running up my stairs! It didn't do any damage? I'm glad it left on it's own. I hear they can be quite a challenge.
I would love to see a kangaroo in my yard but we don't have them around here. If I ever did see one in the yard, I'd have to check my medication.

Hiya mw,
Honest a real live Bull going up the Stairs but I really think that he was just trying to find a way out and he lost himself.
He meant no harm to People as he trotted all the way down and tried to get out again through the other side of the Fence.
Imagine what it would be like to find a real Dinosaur in your Back Garden you would just run for it at least I would.

You see what I mean about having important friends?
You never cease to amuse me.
Hehehehehe...a cow.
I guess it's fairly useless to say to you now;
"Hey Marti, don't have a cow, eh?".....YOU HAVE ONE!
Hehehehe.
No...outside of the occasional skunk, fox, or raccoon wandering by...the strangest things we've ever witnessed in our yard, would have to be the neighbors.

You know, I've seen people having a cow but it was nothing like when I had one.
I know all about neighbors. I have some strange ones, too. Our next-door neighbor used to drive through our property to the other side on his ATV. Why he didn't use the road, I'll never know. He doesn't do it anymore since I've planted trees and bushes and stuff, plus I let the underbrush grow in the wooded area between our houses. I'm surprised he hasn't complained about it.
I did find something the cow left behind just the other day... a nice, big pile of, uhh, fertilizer... right in the front yard.
I wouldn't mind seeing more cows after my surgery next week. I'm going to be in recovery mode awhile (six weeks) so a cow or two would help to occupy my mind.

woot we rarely see a cow here...wandering...
and here there are lots of moo farms...
some times we can see stray cows in the streets...living peacefully but interrupting traffic....
some of us consider cow as god and worship them.so if we find one we will not try and get rid of them instead we give them food..make it leave without harming..
thanks for the topic...
have a great day/night....

I wouldn't have minded if she stayed awhile. She could have provided my garden with lots of fertilizer and kept my grass cut short. Besides that, I could have had all the milk I could want.
But, her owner came to get her and took her home. She was such a sweet cow!

How funny is this...lol A cow in your yard. I would have been concerned about it getting confused and trying to get in the house. You have a wide variety of visitors. The only thing I have ever seen here, been in the same house for 37 yrs., is a mouse in our garage. Last April I saw one and called the pest control people. My husband was too busy at work and wouldn't leave. I was so scared and knew I couldn't keep my car in there anymore or walk in the garage. It was one little mouse. Pest control people set traps and the mouse was found on the side of the garage, on his way to mouse heaven. I was told to be careful putting my car in the garage in the winter or when it's chilly because if there is more to the family it or they could get in my car. Pest control guy said it happened to one of his customer's the week prior to having them come out here. I think the field mice are living in our shed in the backyard. I won't go near it since our lawn guy showed me the holes they had been digging right outside the shed.

Thought I saw something move outside by our shed earlier today. It was a stray cat guarding the shed. Guess it saw mice because the cat was half under the shed where there is a small opening. Didn't see any mice laying on the grass or hanging from the cat's mouth so guess they survived. Am sure that cat will be back...lol Our new security guard was working hard.

Awww, those little field mice are probably more scared of you than you are of them. If a mouse is crazy enough to try to sneak in here, my cat will see to it that the mouse knows he made a BIG mistake.
I'm glad the cow didn't try to get in our house. When I saw it, it was in our side yard and that's where I thought it had gone right from the farm but a few days ago I saw a great big pile of... uhh... fertilizer in the front yard.
We had mice in our garage last winter. I could understand why because we had over eight feet of snow last winter when it's normal for us to have under a foot. I felt kinda sorry for the mice. After all, they were only trying to survive. Still, I didn't appreciate them getting into a bag of grass seed I had in the garage. We started leaving the door from the garage to the house open just a bit so my cat could go in there and get rid of the mice in his own fashion.
Cats make excellent pest controllers!

This is so funny. I have always attracted animals for some reason. My husband says they know who they can trust and I think that to be true.
Okay here goes, I had cows, horses, goats, chickens, a bear, a possum and her babies from two or three litters, deer, turtles, dogs, cats, geese, birds that are not suppose to be in the area I was in and more.
These are the ones I can think of right now.

I live out in the country. The possum was staying in the dog house. She has a few litters of babies and she would come and knock on the glass door for food. She was right testy when she had babies. lol
The bear just came around looking for food I think. IN fact, I think that's what they all came for.
Yes, we are suckers for animals and they know it.

Wow, moon! It sounds like you live in a place very similar to mine. I haven't seen any goats or chickens yet but they do have some on the farm where the cow came from so that's not out of the question. We MAY have had a bear here, although I didn't see it. (See my comment above about the shredded tree stump.)
I did forget the possum. We had one who was munching every night on the cat food I kept on the deck for our cats because they liked to spend so much time outside. I caught it in a Habitrap and transported it about 5 miles from here and released it. Haven't seen one since.
Now, about that "trust" statement. I usually say "they know who the suckers are". I'm definitely a sucker for any kind of critter, as long as they don't sting or bite. Animals instinctively know who is nice. Wouldn't it be great if we could do the same with other people?

Yeah, those 'possums are just about everywhere. I've seen them in my yard when I lived in the city. And they ARE strange... looking. LOL I think they're adorable, in a very ugly sort of way.
If you have local fields, chances are you have field mice but, with all your cats, I'm sure that not many would venture into your yard. Only the really-not-smart ones would try that.

LOL That had to be a sight to behold! Gee, makes you wonder what else will find your yard entertaining, huh? My parents had a pony one time and when neighbors moved in behind them, they too had a horse, a female. Mom and dad's pony would get out of his corral and go visit the female horse. lol When he got out, we'd always know where to find him. Not that he could do anything with her for he was fixed but it didn't stop him from wanting to!

Those were the 'good ole days' weren't they? Our animals could roam free and we didn't have to worry about them getting hit by a car or shot by some jackass. When I was a kid, we had a collie and every now and then, he'd come home smelling like a skunk!! Obviously he met up with one and got sprayed. PHEW!!!!!!!!! We couldn't be near him for weeks on end!!!! Back then we didn't know what to do to end the smell so we all suffered.

I had a cocker spaniel when I was a kid who roamed the neighborhood all the time. He was considered the neighborhood dog because everyone liked him. We had a neighbor who had a horse (a beautiful golden Palomino) and my dog would sometimes go visit him. Well, it was more like the dog was visiting what the horse had deposited on the ground. WHEW! Did he ever stink when he came home!

Now, THAT would have totally freaked me out! I have a rat snake living somewhere in the yard and it scared me bad enough because I could hear a shaking sound. When I looked it up to see what kind of black snake would shake it's tail, I found out it was a rat snake. No rattles, just shakes it's tail as a warning, and they're not poisonous. A rattlesnake would send me packing and moving outta here! I've heard we have copperheads and timber rattlesnakes but I've never seen any.
We have a running joke here about "cows all over the road" whenever we're late for something. It's just one of a long list of ridiculous excuses for being late. "There were cows all over the road," "the ninjas were attacking," stuff like that.

We live in suburbia so if I saw a cow in my yard I would have to check whether someone put something in my morning coffee! We have no strange creatures in our garden except for our dog; she can be a little bizarre at times (LOL)! I love cows; in fact I am looking forward to visiting my father in law’s farm early next year on the other side of the country. He has cows and I loved it last time I was there; we would be lying in bed and then suddenly see this brown cow peering in through the glass doors followed by a loud MOOOO! Love them, I would ask if she could stay if I was you...

If I woke up to see a cow looking at me from outside, I think I'd jump so high I'd leave an impression of my head on the ceiling. Of course, now that I know we have bovine escapees, that isn't totally impossible!
I will ask next time if she could stay longer. I didn't really have time to ask this time. I didn't even know the cow was out there until her owner knocked on our door for help in rounding her up. My first instinct was to grab my camera and head out on the deck to get some pictures. My husband went out to help her. Luckily, the cow was very obedient, despite being a runaway, and went right back home through the hole in the fence she got out through.
But, if she comes visiting again, I'll ask if she can hang around awhile. She can cut my grass (well, eat it), provide great fertilizer AND provide all the milk I could want.

I had a bull in my backyard once...it was scary. My dog was raising the roof, my son had a stick...like that was going to help, and I was hollaring for someone to grab the mase...lol. Hi tomi. I'm sorry I didn't ask if she could stay longer but I was so busy trying to get pictures of the cow, I didn't think of it until it was too late.
She definitely would have been in good hands. I love all creatures, even the snakes in our yard because they help to keep the rodent population down. I'm sure my dogs would have been extremely jealous if I could have kept the cow but that's just too bad. They have to learn how to share.
I forgot all about milk, too. Not only would she keep our grass cut (what is still alive after the extreme heat we've had this summer with hardly any rain) and provide terrific fertilizer, but we'd have all the milk we could want.
Oh, well. Maybe next time.

Hi mentalward! The same happened to me - one day we came home (we'd left the big gate open as we always do when we go out), and found a young heifer in our property! It was a bit of a shock to say the least, and was wandering around our chicken pen, munching the grass there.
We found out later that it had escaped from another property up the road, and the owner came round knocking on our doors to see if it had wandered into our yards. He rounded it up and took it home, and left us with some very fresh fertilizer!

Hi Abbey. They must be awfully curious critters because they do seem to escape whenever they get the opportunity. Apparently, their fence had a hole in it big enough for this cow to get through and she didn't waste any time. LOL Her owner (the woman in the photo) only had to tell her to come home and she headed back to the farm, right through the hole she got out through. She said they'd mend the fence right away but I wish they wouldn't. I'd actually love to see her again. Such a sweet cow!
I used to have some rabbits and they provided a lot of fertilizer in those handy pellet shapes. It worked great, too. The geese are always leaving me some fertilizer but I'm not sure how good it is. I've heard that any animal that eats only vegetation produces great fertilizer. Geese eat fish, too, but I think that's also a good fertilizer.
I haven't had the chance to see if the cow left me any. I hope she did!

I grew up in the city. We had opossums, rabbits, squirrels and raccoons there. My mother was the one who went nuts when she'd see any of them. If I were to believe her, ALL of them would have had rabies. I always wanted to feed them and encourage them to stay.
From what I've known of rabbits, all they need is a bush and they're perfectly content. We had a neighbor who had bunnies living in a burrow under a bush just outside their front door. She would feed them so, of course, they loved it there.

When I was a little girl we had large plow horses on our farm. Every time my dad went to the local produce market to sell our crops, the horses would hear his truck motor and after he left, the horses would kick the barn door down and wander through the neighbor's farms eating all their crops. Maybe you just have sweet tasting grass or the animals can sense a kind loving person lives on your property.
I have seen many animals in my yard over the years. I guess my favorite to watch was the mama skunk and her babies. We always enjoyed them at a distance.

So, horses can be as naughty as dogs when left alone, huh?
We have horses down the road from us but they're not work horses, as far as I can tell. They're pets. I often stop as I'm driving by if they're near the fence and talk to them. They always come over to where I am and put their heads over the fence. One of these days, I just might get out of my car and say hi properly, with a scratch on their heads. I have the feeling they'd love that.
I think you're right about the animals senses. I've drawn strays since I was a kid. Honest! They just followed me home! It was true. Dogs and even cats would follow me home. The rabbits around here aren't even very afraid of me. I can get pretty close to them before they move. I'm not going to encourage them to hang around, though, because I don't want them eating my veggies or strawberries. I have enough trouble with the birds!
About that skunk, you can keep her! I know what they smell like when they spray and I will avoid that whenever possible. My cat catches a lot of the smaller rodents around here and has even caught a rabbit. I'd hate it if he got sprayed and came back in the house, which I know he would.
They are awfully cute to watch, though. At a distance, as you said.

How cute!!!
I've never had a cow in my yard, but one day, on my way to work, I saw a small herd of them. They had gotten out of the local farmer's field, and were wandering arouond. The thing I thought was funny was...one of them was in the yard of a house and was looking in the window. It was early morning, and I could just imagine the owners waking up and seeing a cow looking at them!!!

I don't know what I'd do if I saw a cow looking at me through a window, especially early in the morning, before my brain was fully awake. That's definitely something they'll never forget.
I had to stop for a bunch of cows in the road before. They probably did the same thing, escaped from their farm.
I wouldn't mind having a cow hanging around in my yard, though. They eat the grass, provide lots of great fertilizer and give you all the milk you could want. If this happens again, I'll ask the owner if she'd consider letting the cow stick around for awhile. I'd promise to give it a lot of TLC.

Hi keshia. That's such a cute story! I can imagine your reaction when the deer moved. I'd have the same reaction.
Seeing deer at Christmastime must have been really cool. I don't normally see the deer until there's plenty to eat around our property. I have fruit trees, berry bushes and a vegetable garden every year. I have a time of it trying to keep the deer away. Eventually, I'll have a fence around the property but that has to wait. We have about 3 1/2 acres so that's a lot of fencing! I've been doing little sections at a time, putting them in the spots where the deer have easy access. At least it's harder for them to find their way in now.
