I am the one paying our bills now while my mom is paying our apartment rent. But last night, she wants to have a microwave because in her dorm at where she works at - she has a Microwave and she told me that it has helped her out at whenever she's in a hurry to work (ie heat left over food or etc).
I on the other hand worries because I am positive that Microwave eats a lot of electricity. And I am the one who's paying now. Though Microwave has its magnificent purpose but still... I'm having a brainstorm on this once.
But she's my mom and Mother's knows best. She said it's a good need. LOL. I am having second thoughts though in purchasing by the end of the month.
Help? =)

It is often misunderstood that microwave oven costs more in electricity, but if you look closely you will understand that you will actually save a lot of money if you use microwave in many times when you are cooking some recipes or heating up ready to eat food or leftovers.
For example: something you cook on the electric oven for 1 hour can be done in the microwave oven for 15 minutes. The former eats up 2 KWH, while the latter only 0.36 KWH. Big difference, right?
Microwave oven also promotes healthier eating. You can cook egg sunny-side up without oil on microwave. You can also heat up leftover fried foods which otherwise you will fan-fry again. You can even boil water.
And you dont need to have the microwave oven plugged all the time. You can just plug it when you are ready to cook which saves a lot more.

I got your point. Yes, microwave can be necessary depending on where you use it. Like in the office, dorms which burners are not allowed...Since, you are the one paying the bills, I understand the point that you need to save and conserve. If you have oven or burner in the house and can reheat through those, then why need a microwave? It will be a luxury because you can make use of other appliance in reheating your left overs. Maybe, tell your mom that microwave is not a priority for now.

We have a microwave and before my mom buys one, she thinks it over. Yes, it consumes a lot of electricity, well actually not that much. But compare to heating up foods using a stove, it takes minutes, compare to a microwave where you could heat food even just for a minute.
I suggest that you unplug every appliance after using it. Leaving it plugged, uses electricity too. We saved so much from that.

You can have that microwave but use it sparingly. Try to agree with your mom that you only use the microwave in the morning and should only be used when heating food up. That's just an example.

Hi,
I don't have a microwave at home,but I believe
microwave do make our life easier and pretty convenience.
Especially when we are in rush, we can simply put
our food and heat up inside the microwave.
I understand that you are paying for electricity bill, but I don't
think microwave will take lot of consumption in term of electricity.
Once your mom has finished using the microwave, you can always advised her to
off the power switch, then it won't be wasted.

Don't worry, sirzhang. My mom is as cautious like me when it comes to "saving". From energy to almost everything.
What I am worried of really is the electricity. The electrical company has just made their second 3% on increase so it has been a struggle lately. :D

Understand "needs" and "wants". For a nocturnal person, is it a need?

I for one have kept our Microwave at the storehouse for good. This is not because I am worried about how it will increase our electric consumption but what disturbed me is the health risk of using this. Many things have been written about the danger of using microwave in our food. Although this is still being debated upon, I would rather take the safe side. I will not use microwave anymore if only to be sure that it could not harm my health in anyway. Well not being able to use my Microwave will not paralyze my life in the first place so no problem.

I on the other hand is not aware yet of the "effects" microwave can cause when it comes to trying to heat your food in a quick way. I'll have research on it later.
Just like on the previous post, thank you for pointing this out. =)

I don't think that having a microwave is truly a necessity. For years, people managed to get by without one. It is a modern convenience we have all seemed to come to know. it would not be the end of the world without one. It would be an adjustment, but life would go on.

Your mother is right about the convenience that the microwave brings especially for people on the go. But personally, I am not a big fan of microwave. Until now, we do not have a microwave and we have never found the need for it. I would rather buy food outside if there's no time to prepare it. I am biased against microwave because of all the studies that I have read. Plus, it uses a lot of power. When I really want food heated up, I put it in our oven.

Most use a microwave to save time and for people that have very little time it truly is a blessing. My family uses it on a daily basis as we rarely have time to cook full meals. When i have to work or go to college i have little or no time on my hands and use the good old microwave to cook me up some quick hot tasty food.

That's what she's after - convenience. Which is hard to argue with because she has making a lot of good points. =) I still have until the end of this month to decide. :D

I cannot say microwave oven is a necessity. But since your mom finds it more convenient to have one, having the experience at her work place, I think you should acquire one. From my experience I do not think there will be much difference in the power bill, as the microwave oven does the work fast. We use it for warming food, and best of all for making Idlis! By the way, Idli is a savoury, popular in south India.

For my busy life a microwave is VERY necessary. I may have to run somewhere real fast before time to eat a sit down meal so I will pop something in the microwave and be ready to go! In my opinion and from what I have found a microwave takes up no more power then a medium sized TV. Also it is not like it is running 24/7... only sometimes so it really does not take that much electricity.

I've never had a microwave. I'm quite against food that's prepared in this way. Health-wise, it's the worst possible way to prepare food. Using a wood fire is the healthiest (unless you'd rather go raw, which is even better). Gas cooking is next healthiest followed by electric & microwaves after that. People need to be educated about these things so they can make an informed choice. If people are in so much of a hurry to eat because of work, family, etc, they shouldn't even be eating. Food that is eaten in such a rushed environment can't be doing anyone much good. If you want to be at your best in your job or for your family, then take the time to look after yourself properly first. It is a matter of organization & priority. You only have one life... it's up to you to make the best of it. Personally, I'd rather spend the same amount of money on a good dehydrator. Not only do you get hot (or very warm) food when you need it with just a little planning ahead, but all the enzymes, nutrients, etc, etc are preserved (unlike regular cooking which kills everything & drains the nutrients away). The beautiful form & shape of the food is also preserved or in many cases, enhanced, unlike the appearance of microwaved food. Which would you prefer? Remember, it's your body, your choice & your future... make it a bright one :-)

Well, if you want to save time on heating food and even on cooking food then you would find it useful and handy. But this does not mean that its a necessity. It of course make things easier but a little bit hard on the electricity. Of course fore quick reheating then you might have an edge considering that you will also consume gas when cooking.

hi totally undecided I use my microwave to cook veggies crisp done and our electricity bill actually went down. I am now in a retirement center, my stuff i s in storage until my son can amass enough money to move us back into an apartment. But your mom is right, they do so manyjobs that yuo do not have to heat up a kitchen when cooking for one. I would say go ahead and get one and your mom will give you a lot of hugs, they are'really a big help with meals.Specially as she is paying the rent
too. You owe her a bit lol lol.
