Fire in the house

If, heaven forbid, there was ever a fire in your house...what would be the one thing ( and you can only choose one! ) that you would dash back in to get out?
I have had a huge dilemma with this but have decided that it would be my pets, though I am breaking my own rules here as there are more than one of them...but I am grouping them together, lol.

Okay, since you picked your many pets, 7 of which I know are guinea pigs and you can't just let them out like dogs, I will say that by opening the door allowing my puppies out doesn't count since they left on their own. So I guess the other thing as long as my family is out, is the files with all our important paperwork..

Yep, birth certificates, vaccination records for puppies and son,tax info..You name it..And I also have been slowly scanning my old photos to the computer and will either send them to my mail or photobucket, because another thing that people loss and can never get back are pictures..

Oh yeah I hope it does not happen to anyone. Terrible thing to go through.
But yes haha I can just tie them together. Great idea.

I adore my dogs, but I wouldn't risk my life or ask anyone else to risk theirs to get them out, I would try to get them to come out on their own
I hope I would have the wherewithall, if, as I was escaping, to get them to come with me!!
this question concerns me because I have often wondered about what would happen to them if a fire started while I wasn't home and they couldn't get out, didn't even have a chance,
it makes me very sad to think of it
the best thing I can do is to do everything in my power to prevent such a dreadful thing from happening, by practising safety measures that reduce risk

Hi sulynsi, I think that probably in these circumstances our pets would show a lot of sense and do their best to escape themselves anyway. It's probably best not to imagine the scenario if you weren't there...so many things could happen when we aren't there but you would just depress yourself if you sat thinking abut them too much!

I'll definitely make sure all the human being in the house are safe first, before anything else. But always keep in mind, that during the fire you should always not panic and be alert. Best way to go out of the house, if there is smoke, is to look for a piece of cloth and put it in your face. Well the cloth that you are wearing is the first thing available. If you can make it wet much better. If you cannot see where you are going you crawl since smoke stays up and it will be lesser smoke on the floor.

Also my 3 dogs. I count them as one as they are small enough to be grabbed into one pet carrier.

I'm like you I have 3 babies and they would have to be my first thought if a fire or anything bad broke out to do with my home, tornado or anything.

Well, this is a very good question and yes,it could happen beyond our control.
I had all our important documents put in one file (a folder of files)
And,i also instructed my kids that,in any case anyone of them shouldn't forget to take those files.
Maybe the first thing to grab is my phone which is needed for communication and my laptop just near my bed.

Assuming my kids and husband are awake and can get themselves out, next I would pick my 4 cats (it seems we are all cat lovers on this discussion!). But I think the harder choice is after the family and the pets, what is most important? A dear friend of mine recently had her house basically burn to the ground. All of the living things survived unharmed, but most of her possessions were lost. She said the worst loss was her pictures, many of which cannot be replaced. I think that saving my pictures would be my first choice, followed by the laptop on which all of my digital pictures have been stored. Of course, even my dearest pictures would not be worth my life, but if I could get them out safely, that's what I would choose.

hmmm.. i started a similar discussion a few weeks and i had observed that most people are really concern with this scenario if this ever occurs... but for me.. i will make sure that not a living soul is left inside the house before i leave and i'll make sure that i brought along with me all the important documents with me..such as passport., certificates and etc.. all the rest can easily be bought...again...=(

Well this is assuming my children get out - they are my priority - but next I would grab our safe-box which contains some DVDs & CDs with photos, videos & data backed up, birth certificates, auto titles, and other important documents & papers.

Hi catlady,
If my home was up in flames, and I had to return for something precious enough to risk my life for, I would in a heartbeat. However, if I chose to go in, I would know what I would be getting myself into, the possibility of losing my life over some article.
Truly the only precious thing worth risking my life for, by going back into a burning building, would be another human being since I have not pets. In a situation like this one we need to have our priorities straight.
Safety deposit boxes, are good places to keep value papers and jewelry in, just in case there is a fire in the home. This way you don't have to risk your life running back inside for them.
Saving a human beats anything else.

Im not really sure, when my father was younger there was a fire in his house, he didnt grab anything except his sister, he threw her out the window, braking her arm. nice gesturei just dont tihnk he thought it through that well. (they were on the second floor, and the fire was trapping the stairs)
I might bring my ipd, music is my life.

I would not choose anything over my daughter. She is more important than any other thing in this world for me. And I think it is the same for all the parents out there. I would not bother with things. They can be always be bought. I would first make sure she and my husband are safe.

well, I hope that won't happen in my house hehehe..but if ever it happens, i will bring my folder that contains all my credentials because it is really hard to secure those papers and that is what I need in my job or if ever i decided to transfer job. I wish I can bring the cabinet, but it will be too heavy lol
