Novels Turning To Movies

Hi Mylotters. I've heard people say that books are better than their movie interpretations. I can say this applies to some. For instance, the movie cannot encapsulate everything that's written on the novels. Even those details that we found important when we read the novel can't be found sometimes. I liked how they made Harry Potter come to life although they missed a couple of details here and there because so many things happened in one book. I also like how The Lovely Bones was interpreted. My friends say that Twilight was so much better in the book. I'd like to know what movies from books you like and those that you don't like too much. Thanks.

That's right books are usually better than their movie interpretations. I believe in that but there are exceptions of course. There are some movies better than the book. One of my favourite movies is Shawshank Redemption. It is my number one movie. It's an adaptation of Stephen King's "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption".

I absolutely love that movie, as well. I haven't read the book but now that you've mentioned it, I will surely check it out. Thanks.

Before the land of computers and lots of movies to go view or watch on TV, there was not much to choose from so books were our best entertainment. I read Gone with the Wind one of the biggest productions ever made into a movie. There is actually a 4pack DVD 2parts movies and one part on the actors and one on the making of the movie. But there was some parts left out of the movie that were in the book. Same as Titanic, and many other books I can think of. A movie is usually a simplified version of the book. However when my son had to do book reports after he read the book if there was a movie to go with it I let him watch it so it helped him understand what he was reading better. I think a book can compliment a movie and a movie can compliment a book if you do both.

I used to watch movies to get a good book report when I was in high school, too. The movie summarizes the book and sometimes sadly leaves out a lot of details. Sometimes we consider such details important and we end up disappointed to have such parts missing in the movie.

I liked lord of the rings. I didn't read the book but i enjoyed the trilogy alot. I read memoirs of a geisha way before it was turned into a movie and i though the book was much better. The movie just didn'T give that spark that the book gave me.

I personally believe that books are better than movies period... not just when it comes to adaptations but in general. And I actually happen to like movies a lot. Books are just SOOO much better to me! The kind of novel adaptations that I enjoy are the kinds that stay true to the original plot of the book and keep the characters in character. If a movie makes a major change to the plot, or changes the personalities of the characters... then I don't enjoy it. I don't mind if the characters don't look how I pictured them, if some changes are made to better fit the format (Let's face it, movies and books are quite different and you can't translate everything to the screen.), or if the movie doesn't quite capture the "feeling" of the book. (Whatever that means. I happen to hear that excuse a lot.) I liked the adaptations for Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Holes, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (The first adaptation was just kinda okay, the second one was better... but the third completely nailed it.), and City of Ember. I didn't like the adaptations for Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Eragon, Ella Enchanted, and Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief.

Me too. I prefer books over adaptations. Sometimes, they're prettier, fancier, better in our imagination than onscreen.

That's true. I appreciated Harry Potter books because I watched the movie first. It would be hard to imagine how Quidditch is played, for instance, without the movie. I haven't watched LOTR but I've read really positive reviews about the movie. I feel like the only one who hasn't seen it yet. :)
