My Sinuses are Killing Me

I woke up yesterday and felt like I had a dry throat all day long. Then today I woke up and I am congested and just don't feel good in general.
That said, I was wondering what people do to help them feel better when they are having a sinus attack. I don't want to go to the doctor's office because it costs money that we really don't have right now. I have taken some benedryl for the congestion and I've also taken some ibuprofen for the headache that I've got as well.
What do you do to help relieve sinus pain and pressure?

Ibuphrophin, brand name box of moisturized tissues, and a heating pad on my face is what always helped me when I had sinus problems. Hot showers help, but while taking a hot shower blow your nose every minute or two. I've heard of people getting good results with a neti pot but I dunno that I could use one of those.
A trip to the Dr is a waste of time IMO. I had a sinus infection so bad it felt like someone was hitting me in the face with a baseball bat & all they did was give me an antibiotic... that was a waste of a co-pay & script co-pay. As the antibiotic did nothing to ease the pain.
Though I will say since I had sinus surgery as I had a polyp removed, my sinus pain is next to nothing now. I just do like I mentioned with blowing my nose alot when I feel one coming on.
I hope it passes fast!

the infection I had that was that bad they gave me a step down pack of steroids as well, because I put off going for so very long.

EEK! Either you had it worse than me or a better Dr!
I was on a steroid I think 2x once I went to a specialist to see if they could shrink the polyp witch didn't work & I ended up with surgery. Course what they found behind the polyp I was like OMG... especially for the script I had to have was several hundred $$$$ even AFTER insurance & we have good insurance!

I've not tried the heating pad to the face yet, but I did take a really hot shower the other night and that seemed to help out a lot.

a lot of the same. try zicam sinus. my son said it helped him a lot. unfortunately i usual end up having to go to the doctor i really hope you wont have to. last time i avoided it by taking a couple doses of Mucinex to get rid of the congestion.

guafensin (mucinex0 is a good choice to get the mucus flowing and loosen it up so it does not grow into an infection. Also hot, spicy chicken soup or tortilla soup helps make your sinuses clear up.

I do like Mucinex and I think that there are several times that it has been able to save me a trip to the doctor's office. And Gerty, as far as the spicy things go, it is funny that you should mention that because my husband suggested I eat a little bit of the salsa my friend sent home with us the other day.

I've been drinking a lot of water and also mixing that with some lemonaid as well. I took benadryl all day on Tuesday when it was the worst but I've not taken any since then. Since you mention it, I think I may have to take a dose now.

I do this and I have heard using a neti pot will also help. I just sniff warm salt water up one side and then the other, be very careful of this or it will
run down your throat. Good luck

I have to admit that this is the first time that I've heard of a Neti Pot, but it sounds like something that I need to look into. Thanks both for the suggestion.

I use Tylenol Allergy sinus or the Walmart equivalent thereof.. And for the sore scratchy throat.. I drink a lot of tea(with brown sugar and milk)- I find it soothing.
Ibuprofen is a staple for me. but I find that it doesn't really work on a sinus headache- nothing but actual "sinus" medication gives me any relief. I may take the ibuprofen with the sinus stuff -but it's almost a waste taking it alone.
I have also used benadryl and sudafed type meds- but they usually make me feel sleepy or foggy and I don't prefer them as much.. but sometimes the headache is so bad I only plan on lying down and going to sleep to ease it anyway- so I will take this stuff then.

You are right about benadryl making you have a foggy head. That is actually one of the things that I really don't like about it. However, it is also the only thing that you are truly able to get over the counter around here, so I have to deal with it. They keep sudafed behind the pharmacy counter and that is a huge inconvenience for me.

I don't like to spend all day shopping when I'm not feeling well, but if I am up to par and don't have to worry about kids, I could do it all day long and then some.

what i found worked was a bowl of hot water with a spoon full of vicks vapour rub or eucaliptus oil, place a tea towel over your head then put your head over the bowl for a few minutes, take a break for 5 minutes then repeat,do this as often as you think is nesesary, within a few hours my sinuses feel a lot better

anything with lots of steam should work, take a long hot bath in a steamy bathroom, that works well also,,if you get earache with your sinuses, put a bit of cotton wool into each ear, you'll be suprised how quick the earache goes

I tend to love to do the hot steamy shower and that above everything else seemed to make the biggest difference.

That's a good suggestion. At this point I would be willing to try just about anything. I really can't handle this pressure for too much longer.

I use saline nasal spray all of the time. You can also do a saline irrigation if you are prone to get sinus infections. Hot compresses to the face often will help. I like tea tree oil and lavender oil, for me that clears me up, but Vicks Vaporub is good as well. I mix my own scented oils, but it is expensive to get them at first. Then when I have headaches or sinus pressure I rub it on my temples and across the bridge of my nose and even under my nose. I like the store brand of Claritin (loperamine?) better than I like diphenhydramine (benadryl) as it dries me out less and does not make me feel drowsy.

I do occasionally use the nasal spray for my sinuses, but I have to admit that I don't really like it. I've never tried Claritin, but I might have to give it a try.

I have had a very bad sinus year so far too. I have found that Aleve (Naproxen) is the only thing that helps once my sinus headache heads to migraine. Sometimes an Aleve early enough with keep it from progressing.
Also, I have been taking NyQuil at bedtime for a couple of months now. If I don't, I can't breathe when I wake up.
Good luck and feel better soon!

To be completely honest, I really don't like taking medicines at all, but there are times that it is a necessary evil. I'm feeling a lot better now, but I'm still getting caught up with coughing fits during the night.

I really did enjoy my hot shower then night that it was the worst. The problem for me was that I really didn't feel like the water was quite hot enough.

I went to my doctor over a year ago and told her that I was coughing a great deal - especially at night when I lay down to sleep. I could not believe that I now have a sinus problem and didn't really believe her. So I now travel with an inhaler and it does help but I notice that if I enter a shop with any form of chemicals then I start coughing again. I do not have headaches thought but I do sometimes have a dry throat but I did not know that this was also a sign. of sinusitis. I do hope that you feel better soon. My coughing never stops without the use of the spray and this also concerns me - it is horribly expensive.

I tend to get really sinusy on a seasonal basis, so I've never had to do an inhaler. I admit that I'm glad of that as well because I know how expensive that medications can get.

I now take prescription sinus meds. However, in the past I use to take Tylenol Sinus. It worked great for me. I would take it along with otc meds for a cold and I would be better in no time. I hope you feel better soon.

I've never tried Tylenol Sinus, I might have to give that a try if it gets really bad again.

Sorry you're not feeling well! I tend to take no medicines at all (especially since I'm still nursing) - so I try to go as natural as possible. Someone already mentioned the shower to relieve the pressure (I have used that facial steamer too - or just steam from boiling water for dinner - ha ha). I like warm/hot water throughout the day too - with a hint of lemon. I like eating spicy foods - particularly some good salsa - as the spices make you sweat and it releases some of the pressure! I eat tons of garlic during sick times as garlic is supposed to be a natural antibiotic (chop 'em up and put them in soups or whatever). Oh - and avoid sugar and dairy as much as possible. And this might be stupid, but I try to put my head in various positions - even upside down . . . "sometimes" it works to relieve the pressure if it's in the right position. Get better soon!!!!

I definitely hear you about avoiding the dairy products when you aren't feeling well. I also eat more spicy things when I'm congested because it does seem to help loosen up all of the congestion. I must admit, however, that I've never tried the different positions with my head.

Drinking hot tea helps. Also vicks vaporub rub it on your feet at night then put socks over top. When your feet sweat it will continue to release the vapors to help you breathe better. Hot showers help because they steam up the bathroom. I have a saline rinse that I use per my allergist's recommendation and it works wonders. If you can stand hot peppers, the capsaicin in them will help clear your sinuses. In some cultures they even drink hot tea with cayenne pepper in it but I have not been brave enough to try that yet lol.

I definitely can't see myself drinking tea with cayenne in it, but since I've got pressure again today, I can see myself possibly pulling out the jar of hot salsa that my friend sent home with us the other day.

I really wish that sleeping through the day would have been an option, but it wasn't because I had my own three year old along with my three year old niece and my one year old niece here. Sleeping all day would definitely not have been pretty.

When my sinuses start to act up, it will make my jaw get really tight. And I most definitely did the hot shower the other night. It felt great and seemed to help a lot, I just wish the water would have been a little bit hotter.

Keeping yourself hydrated helps a ton. Just make sure you drink a lot of water and replenish regularly throughout the day. Tea can also be a good alternative since the heat will comfort your stomach and clear you sinuses up a bit. And of course a lot of rest and sleep whenever you can. You'll be up and running again in no time even without medication. But I tend to mix this therapy with a little drowse inducing medicine to help me get the process along and rest better. Hope this helps!

Definitely been trying to take in plenty of fluids. And I've also been trying to make sure that I get plenty of rest. What really gets on my nerves about it is that I felt a lot better yesterday, but today has been a bit rougher.
