Eating becomes a problem when we turn to food to deal with our emotions, RIGHT?

We can feel happy, sad, stressed, worries, powerless, angry, excited....All are good excuses to eat, rather that eating when we are hungry. We let our emotions determine when to eat, as well as what to eat quite often. Suddenly we are using food to make us feel better about the events going on in our life. We have ended up with a relationship with our food that is far more complex than it should be. I/We know that the ideal situation is to enjoy our food for what it is and nothing more. I'm currently facing this situation... and I'm guilty. What do you think I/We need to do to learn how to NOT use food for coping with everything else that is going on with my/our life? Ops! Are you also aware of your current eating habit? Hello to everyone!

Welcome to my world! I eat to feel happy, when I am stressed, when I feel deprived, when I am angry, sad, sometimes when I am bored,Frustrated, worried, hungry and depressed! I am trying to deal with this on my own! It isn't easy and I don't want to get help from the professionsals! Had too much of that for other reasons in the past! Quite burnted out from that! I am overwieght because of this and have been must of my life! I have serious problem! I need to get under control! Otherwise I will continue to get bigger and bigger!

Thanks blue65packer... but I don't want to stay long in your so-called "world" - lol Yes, I don't want to gain more weight... but eating really makes me feel better when I'm depressed or stressed out. I eat even when I'm not hungry...gosh! this is not a healthy habit. Self-control is all I/we need to do.

The happy, anger, sorrow and excited are very common in our life, eating food is also very ordinary, eating different food may be able to have different mood, and you will choose different food under different mood, but but there is no full relationships between food and emotions, for example you can pay attentation on sports, through movement you can also improve your emotion , after that eating will not be your problem.

When we use our emotions to determine when and what to eat, it is a certain emotions that draw us to food, right? Somehow, we have a relationship with food. Quote: "...after that eating will not be your problem." Let's try to be aware of how much we are eating. Sometimes, we eat even though we are not hungry. And there's the problem begin. Am I right? I want to hear more of your ideas moonwing...

Hmmm....I always turn to comfort food when I'm going through some tough times and if I need some emotional comfort... but I guess I've been lucky enough to be able to still control and manage it that way... I've never been obesed all my life. But I've never been a 100% healthy eater either. I crave for junk food from time to time. I guess self control and moderation is always the key.

Yes, foods and can be comforting too. But we need to always be reminded that "one is enough two is too much."

In the past, I used to eat a lot of food when I was depressed or stressed out. I still do today, but not as much. I know I will feel much worse later (upset stomach, full) so I try to think about that before I eat something bad.

You mean self control is badly needed when we are in depressed or stressed out mode?

I was down yesterday cause something happened to me and with someone and I was really sad about the situation we had and on my home home, I decided to stop the bakery to get some bread but I ended up eating ice cream. Grrr! I think I know now what your point is when you say eating becomes a problem when we turn to food to deal with our emotions.

...I hope everything will be okay, soon. Ops! Don't give yourself another ice cream to try and rid yourself of the bad feelings.

Hello there.. I am also guilty of this coping behavior wherein I turn myself to eating whenever I am depressed over something.., and I don't mind how much I am taking in that food as long as it makes me happy temporarily and gets off the problem out of my head.. =)

The trouble is, the food we are eating is changing nothing, except maybe our waistline and health. Our problem aren't solved, our stress is not gone. We need to be able to cope with the stuff that is going on with our life in ways that don't involve eating but bring real changes.
