I've been burning and compressing all of my picture files and other files to save them from being lost, and I'm getting tired of having to buy CDs every time I need to save a file I'm running out of hard drive space and I sometimes worry that my computer might crash before I can get all my valuable files and art creations stored safely.
Can some of you tell me a good (FREE) computer file back up site I say free becuse I cant afford anymore monthly bills at this time, so I hope you can tell me of a good free back up site? thanks cant waite to check em out.

I apologize that I cannot tell you a good back-up site, but if you wish to save money, go and ask about a "External Hard Drive"
It can also be known as a 'flash drive'
It's basically a USB device that you slide into your computer that has a LOT of space;
You can get them in 512 mbs all the way up to 360 gigs.
You can even get them bigger, also!
They're reusable!
Once you have backed up your files, you can transfer them back to your computer, then delete them off the flash drive, and you don't have to throw it out, you don't have to worry about buying another one.
Also you don't even have to throw them out.
You can get some pretty good ones out there,
I got a 4 gig flash drive for $9.99
I would highly suggest getting that over using a website.
ALL websites can be hacked, ALL websites claim to be safe...
How can you not feel safe when all of your files are on a small device that's right in your pocket?

I agree with the above statements and recommendation. Anyway, if you really wanted wanted to save some many and your pictures and other files are not that sensitive, you can try to upload it to some know websites such as PHOTOBUCKET.com,friendster.com, or even in windows live. Though these sites has limited space I think 2 gig is the maximum.

artnoble123 I know about photobucket and appreciate the advice but I'm an artist and I would not want to risk loosing the rights to my own work by uploading them there unless it was a creation that not that importaunt to me but most of my work is very importaunt to me, so nuh photobucket is not for me but thanks though.

Your obvious option is none other than given by Keuthonymos. You can get external harddisks or pendrives of large capacities at affordable prices. Webstorages can be limited in capacity and risky. One other method is to use out your mail box capacity in yahoo, gmail or hotmail, and risk getting hacked.

Cd can break or if you live it directly on sun it can become useless or if it's too scratched it will skip or it can just sort of like become useless over a period of time say 4 years especially if it's not a quality brand. It's different with hard drives. Oh and there's an option to upload files to server if you want when you buy a wd external hard drive. It's a really reliable and neat thing to have

No place is safe for storing files. The best thing is to store important files at various places. As we know, CD/CDRW won't last forever, once it starts peeling off or when light can pass through it, you might not be able to restore your files.
Black plated CD seems better but not CDRW. I found most CDRW peels off quite fast when exposed to sunlight or when we didn't use it for quite some time. I have lost quite some valuable information form this. External hard disk is a good place to store data and is even cheaper than CDs. However, hard disk might also crash and it would be impossible for certain cases to restore your data. Therefore, keep important information in various location. Maybe some needs to be printed out and store physically too if you feel the the files are important. Online storage is great but, no body guarantees that it will be available forever.

Well I burned a quite a few files using CD and I take pretty good care of all my CD files and DVDs I keep them in there cases at all times careful not to damage them, and so far there holding up great.
But its getting costly buying so many CD for burning though I think the black plated CD sounds like a good idea, oh and yeah I printed a few of my digital works, but printer ink is so expinsive so I cut back on doing so much printing. well thanks for stoping in.

The best online site I know so far is adrive.com, they give 50GB free (yes 50) and even more for paid account. Of course, as said before, I would not rely only on online storage, but rather than on something that YOU control directly. The external HD seems the best choice for me, it's cheap these days and reasonably secure, CD/DVD are also good too. A second computer that automatically takes full backups everyday may work well.
In any case, if you go with any kind of online storage, be sure to encrypt your files with a strong password before uploading. And have a copy somewhere else.

There is one thing to remember when you are dealing with FREE services, you have no right to go after them in any event that your files got lost or your account got deleted.
Free services should only be used for temporary uploading of files. But if you have important documents that needs backup then you have to opt for paid services.
You should consider instead buying DVDs or DVD-Dual Layer which has 8GB capacity. There are also external hard drives which are becoming more affordable these days. From 500 GB to 1 Terabyte (2x 500gb) capacity. I think you can backup more than a lot there.

If you want to backup files on the net you can use file hosting sites such as
4shared.com
megaupload.com
mediafire.com
there are many more but I suggest this three I personally use 4shared for my music pics and doc files.

I was just thinking of the same thing Keuthonymos said earlier. It's best if you upgraded to external hard drives and flash drives. Also, if you have enough money, buy two of the same-byte hard/flash drives; one for the original, and one for backup. If you have a 250GB hard drive from Western Digital, buy another one from the same manufacturer or from Seagate.
On the internet, things change, and what's here on the web may be gone tomorrow, especially when it comes to online file storage. I used Yahoo! Briefcase, Xdrive and Streamload when I was in my high school, and somewhere inside my hard drives are the contents of my files I saved from there. Y!B, SL and XD are all gone, but at least I downloaded them to my hard drive before they came tumbling down. That's why I stopped using online file storage sites because they and your files inside won't stay there forever.

I used to burn a lot of CDs in the past too to backup my files, but my CD collection is getting too cluttered too and storage of those CDs is getting more of a hassle and pain. Hence, I started storing my data in External Hard Disk Drives (External HDDs). These are much better than storing files online because of privacy reasons as well as the possibility of the online storage site being closed down and you lose all your files. External HDDs are quite cheap now; generally a 500GB one will cost about $130 and I have seen even 1TB ones being sold for slightly lower than $200. Anyway, I have been using 4shared.com to download files uploaded by others, and I think I have seen people uploading their database of files to that site. Although I have never uploaded any files to that site before, I think it's worth checking out on your part.....not sure how many GB of data storage they offer though.....

I can suggest you a solution even if it is not totally free and it's a bit little bit harder than the other posts here:
Make a free account at godaddy, buy yourself a .info domain (it's about 1$), choose the free hosting plan at godaddy and than upload your files at your own site. What you'll get is a free site(that you own it) where you upload and store your files and where you don't have problems with the owner rights and all that it cost you it will be the 1$ you spent on your domain(the renewal tax will be around 7.5$ and will be paid after 1 year if you want to keep the domain - if not it will take you nothing more). Other advantages - you can find and download a free suite template and use it to publish and promote your work if you want so. So, as you can see it's not so easy and it involves a bit of work, but you'll get your own storage space online almost for free.

Hi dear,
Storage is a problem when we are working with lot things. I have heard of some site with free space and safe storage and not remembering the name of the site. I will post you after a few days once I got it. In fact I have forwarded the link to one of my friend also. It was about 8-10 months back. Let me have a try.
Also, you can buy an external hard disc which is come with 360GB 500GB and 1TB, etc. Recently I have purchased an external hard disk of Seagate make. You can try the same. If you buy one, put little extra money and go for a higher capacity one link 500GB or 1TB. That can be used for a long period of time as well as for ever. Keeping your confidential files in the hands of third parties will be risky and insecure. The files file backup sites and offering safety also. But for your safety, this kind of solutions is still better. When safety is a matter, our own way is more appropriate.
Regards,
Thank-s

I am a technical support agent and I get a lot of customers dealing with this problem. I don't want to give you a safe free back up site not because I don't want to or I don't know these sites. It's because I want you to know that it's not really a good idea. If you really want to back up files ,the best solution is to have an external hard drive. It will help you a lot for storage. Even if time comes that it is the external hard drive your having problems , you can still go to a local computer shop store where they can connect a hard drive enclosure to it so that you can still have a copy of these files. =)
