Have you had the feeling that oldies are better so many times?
Yesterday, a friend of mune come for tea and brought an old movie I had seen decades ago. It was flamenco dancing with a story, the music for Amor Brujo by the Spanish composer Manuel De Falla directed by Carlos Saura with the incredible dancers Antonio Gades and Cristina Hoyos.
If you have the oportunity of getting it and you like flamenco dance, do see it. Saura also made a couple of other flamenco movies. One is Carmen (wonderful for the opera lovers) and Bodas de Sangre.
This is more than movies for people who are interested in flamenco dance: it is pure art.
Do you keep in your memory some ageless movies that you would see over and over? Why do you do it? Share

i always watch old films when i can, right now i am watching the original 1950 'day of the triffids'. earlier on today i watched the original 'time machine'. in the past there were not so many movie effects so the story lines had to be extra good to wow the audiances. i love films both new and old but i never get fed up of watching a good old movie especially sci-fi.

Thanks for sharing, gnomeland! I think as you do that the story lines and the actors had to do it really well without special effects. Those Bible stories of the 50´s, with Charlon Heston as the main character,, were also awesome.

Hiya margi,
I used to watch the Film about "The Triffids" too I thought it was scary but quite funny and ingenious also.
"Ben Hur" is another one of my favourites also.
You know my favourite of all favourites is still "Ivanhoe".(grin). Don´t you like Robert Taylor´s beautiful blue eyes then? Go on tell us if you do. I can´t be the only girl that likes him.

I remember Ivanhoe! Stewart Granger was another one of my heroes then. Did you see The prisoner of Zenda, with Deborah Kerr and James Mason?

I loved it when she made the dress out of the drapes. I thought the lady that played her maid was great to. I just liked it alot. I loved tara. Maybe being from the south had somewthing to do w/it.

Hi there. I really love Australian movies. I'm not terribly fond of old, old movies as I find them a bit dull. Movies I grew up with are the ones I love, say from the 60s to the 70s and onward. I recently purchased the DVDs for Breakfast at Tiffany's and Sabrina.
I'm not familiar with the movies or actors you mention.

I have not seen many australian movies but I have seen some very good ones.
As for Sabrina, in spite of the very good secondary actors in the remake (I loved the mother), I prefer the Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn.

Without a doubt old movies are generally better than modern ones for the simple reason they focussed on telling stories rather than trying to wow you with big action scenes, CGI and star names. As someone who is an admitted Movie Geek I've now got into the habit of recording random old movies off of TV which I know little about and 9 out of 10 times I end up more entertained watching these than modern movies.

I think a good movie must mix a good plot and action in the sense of it not being too slow. After all, that was the idea behing the moving of the figures.. But plot, characters with good actors are a must

@jonjee0203 - You are right it is how you use the combination of technology and plot, except most movies don't really combine them. I can't comment on Salt as I haven't seen it yet but Avatar did get it nearly right, the technology did help in the telling of the story, just a shame the story was so poor in the first place.

Hiya margi,
Yes I like those Movies but I like much better the old films of "Lola Flores" I think she was such a down to earth person. I always liked the way she was and a very spirited Woman.
The Film I most cherish is in English of the Oldies I mean. I love the Film "Ivanhoe" the old version.
I have recorded it a few weeks back now I am going to put it on Dvd. It´s in Spanish but it´s all the same to me nothing translates like those eyes of Robert Taylor or the look of love in the eyes of Rebecca of York (Elizabeth Taylor).
It´s a timeless romance I think that Ivanhoe really felt something for that Girl Rebecca of York.
But for Spanish Oldies as I said before the Films of Lola Flores and her Daughters are now starting to become just like her too as she was before very curious that.
Also the Films that the now passed over Singer Rocio Jurado I really like her powerful voice for me no other can sing like that and her Films were good too.
Not that I don´t like other Films like "Marisol" They are cute Films but I prefer the ones I have mentioned.

I have never seen pictures by Lola Flores although I saw her once in the TV and have all her records.
As for Spanish oldies, I love still the pictures made by Sarita Montiel. But Spain has mow such a giant director that nothing can be close to him. I mean Almodovar, of course.

Hiya margi,
Oh yes Sarita Montiel I liked her Films too up to a point. I don´t dislike most of them really but I really admired Lola Flores for her immense courage and the other Singer Rocio Jurado they are the real Stars of Spain for me and not forgetting Rocial Durcal.
Sarita Montiel is in a pickle at the moment because she has to prove that she really was robbed by her I don´t what he is supposed to be really. It all seems very tricky to me and I don´t usually watch those things so now I don´t know what is going on exactly with that.
Sarita Montiel is still doing well you know considering.

If I can't find anything that looks good on the shelf, I'll rewatch a film. Can be something I watched an year ago, can be something I watched 20 years ago (oh wait I wasn't born then...) All right, 10 years then!
One thing I will not watch are crap movies. Movies with cliched dialogue, predictable story lines and poor acting.

WOW!!! You are young, my friend! If you like movies, you will have to start watching the classics too. I wasn´t born whenChaplin made most of his films (and I´m an old witch) but some of his films are timeless.
If you like horror movies, you have to see Psycho (not the remake) and Rosemary´s baby. You name the genre you like and I´ll give you ideas. I went to the movies for decades when my husband was alive. It was one of the interests we shared.

I love movies in general, so I will say that both recent and old movies can be good or bad. The thing is there are certain types of movies that were especially popular in a certain era. Dance movies are one of those special cases, they had their golden period in the 30s to the 60s. There were all types of movies, and dancing styles with dancers like Gene Kelly(An American in Paris is beautifully done), Fred Astair(His dance sequence in Royal Wedding where he dances on the wall and ceiling is amazing)and Leslie Caron(Gigi is beautifully done) to name just 3. It was an era of musicals from things like West Side Story to Singing in the Rain but then for a while very few were made. The seventies was All that Jazz(very well done) and Fame. The eighties had some well known dance movies, like Flashdance, Tango, White Nights(has two of my favourite dancers Gregory Hines and Mikhail Baryshnikov) and Dirty Dancing. Were as the nineties has two of my favourite 'newer' dance movies which are Strictly Ballroom(the last 15 minutes are very well done) and Shall we Dance?(A beautiful Japanese film by Masayuki Suo that was redone with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere). In the 00s there were several dance movies I liked, Billy Elliot, Take the Lead, Step up. I have to thank you, I have never seen this particular movie, though I have limited knowledge of flamenco dancing I do admire Joaquín Cortés having seen two of his shows it is a beautiful to watch.

It seems we are all old movie fans. I hadn´t had time to comment on the two last pages of my post. Sorry! But your answers reminded me of movies I saw many times. Zorba the greek was awesome and it is one of the few films that are not horrible as compared to the book, even when the writer was Nobel Price Kazantzakis. I don´t know how many times I saw My fair Lady. I sung in the shower "just you wait, ´enry ´iggins" when I was mad with my husband. Dirty dancing is awesome and most of those films still have their charm that time has not erased.

There are lots of old movies I like that probably wouldn't get made nowadays as they are too experimental and wouldn't make enough money. But they say more about society at the time they were made than many of the big budget films made around the same time. The latest one I've seen is a film caller "Performance" with Mick Jagger and Anita Pallenberg, apparently it wasn't very popular when it came out as it's quite hard to understand what's going on at first and Mick jagger doesn't appear until about half way through. But it is a really good film and shows what it was like in London for many people at the time it came out.

I know that even many of the movies that were important at its time has not aged well. But there are other timeless movies that can be seen as new by younger generations, even if they lack the special effects we have now or the technology. The epic movies by Cesar B. de Mille are one example of that. And I have watched and cried over Casablanca many times, in spite of it not being in technicolor.

We sat down with our eight year old daughter not too long ago and watched ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’ the old black and white with Gregory Peck. Our daughter loves it for some reason and has picked up the moral of the story. I still love ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘My Fair Lady, ‘Casablanca’ and ‘Mary Poppins’.

Hi Paule,
Those are other great movies. At he time I learnt by heart all the songs from My fair lady and fell in love with Lisa´s father. I also loved Jesuschrist Superstar, the rock opera. It moved me beyond words.
Gregory Peck was at it´s best in To kill a mockingbird. I´m having lots of fun answering this post because I am remembering so many wonderful movies of yesteryears

I am an avid movie watcher. Some of my favorite films are not the recent ones. They may have more action and great special effects to their credit. i still prefer to watch a lot of the older movies. Some of the classics just have that somerthing special that can still draw you in. Gone With the Wind is a timeless movcie that i could see again and again. The romance and drama of older films just can't be matched in today's films.

I agree with that. And now it os difficult to find a film that shows in depth problems of the human life and soul. It is true that special effects are awesome, but they mustbe put to use in another way.
Gone with the wind is a movie that should be a must not only for american children and teens but all over the world. It is about the clashing of two worlds.

There are some movies that are really good before but when it comes to features, there are a lot of movies that are way better than what they had a long time ago. When it comes to story, there are also old movies that are really better than the movies now.

I saw Avatar very much. My granson came with it to see it with me and I had no expectations. But it´s not a romance story, but a clash of values. And that´s what we are living in our planet now. If we don´t decide to learn to take care of Erath soon, we will not survive. I´m glad a film such as that could be made in such way that 10 year olds as my grandson loved and wanted to be in the good, alien world.

There are a few movies from the old days that I like to watch such as: Arsenic and Old Lace, Rebecca, Lawrence Of Arabia. But I think that I would rather go for the movies that are coming out these days, because for one I don't really like black and white movies. And two, I think that the reason why we keep making movies is because we are a changing society. Yeah, the old movies are good to watch and to look on from the old days, but what are our grandkids going to watch if we didn't make our movies too? :)

There will be other classics, but some will stay if we help it. I think that if I were a citizen from the US, I´d make Gone with the wind part of the school programation. And if I were teaching History, WWs, Casablanca and he Bridge on the River Kwai would be also a must because human values are shown among the action.

Some classic old films are my favorite. While i cann't refuse charms and fantasties of our New films which use 3D skills. Some old films will never die due to it unique story or charactoristics.

I suppose that, besides our own taste and memories associated with a certain film, some old good films become classics if they appeal to younger generations too. So I suppose time has a saying there. My mom took me to see Gone with the wind when I was little and I took all my grandchildren. They were interested and it did not matter that there were no special effects.
In another genre, I think Casablanca has no equal. Psycho is tops too, among other Hitchcock movies. But Anthony Perkins is superb there so I´d place it way up from The birds.

People complain that old movies are better then new ones because of expectations.. they expect the 'Newer' one to be so amazing, then they get slightly disapointed and think the old one is better, for example.. Die hard 1,2,3,4, some people will go Die hard 1 is better then 4 simply because it was out in there day, or some odd bizzar reason, but honestly.. 4 is better. I mean! The cinematics and explosions and acting of newer movies are simply better then old ones!

I don´t think acting necessarily is better (sometimes is is a lot worse). But if you are interested in special effects, you must vote for new movies.

i don't think old movies are better than the new ones. there are still new movies that are really good that after a decade would become one of great movies of all times. i feel people consider movies like a bottle of win. the older it gets the better it gets. i watch whether old or new. as long as i enjoy it i will consider as one of the best.

I've rented several DVD's because my friend criticized me for having little interest in new movies. So,I've watched several movies made in 2005-2009 with good reviews. These movies were different, an action movie, historical drama, one comedy and one horror movie.Same old stories, bad acting and worst sound I ever heard.BAD ACTING is killing nowadays.I have a list of actors that make me sick when they appear on the screen.Yuck.
I can watch Fred Astaire dancing million times.I can watch Chaplin million times. Some of my friends think that I'm old as the Titanic story.Well, I just like good old stuff.

hi,yes i will accept this disscusssions.old movies are better than the new movies.because the new movies aim are not correct waythey are taking movies in old as they possible.so old movies are watching them to better.the new movie songs are not good because the lyrics are not understood as well as they are putting words in improperly.theyr included the more bad worda. and then that words they should avoid because the children's are memorize the lyrics so that they use more not proper words.they do not want to use these type of words so they surly watching old movies.

Old movies are much more better than new one. Nowadays, we can not see the movies with family members because many illegal things are included with today's films. All are going to cinema theatres with their friends or lovers only. They are afraid to go with their family. Even when watching TV with my family also we felt uneasy when any illegal scenes came. So my vote is for old movies only. Old is Gold.

yes its true that good old movies are better than new one..!! old movies had stories in it..,the importance was given to the story part..!! now a a days story is not much important but importance is given to glamor. that is why i found now days movies are meaningless to see. but recent all movies are not bad..,some of these movies are really very good to see..,but number should increase...!!!
