Wish there were only one spoken language.

I live in a place surrounded by people from different tribes who speak in their individual languages. And I speak in a language different from all those. Though there are few common languages to interact among all, still in some points I find it too difficult to express myself clearly. Even it becomes almost impossible to interact with children and old people who are not familiar with those common languages. When I see them speaking to each other, I wish, I could take part in their conversation. But, alas! I can't. Here also I am not getting able to express myself very well since English is not my mother tongue though I am fluent in that. I wish, God had given us only one language! Wish, we all had a single mother tongue! So, friends, how do you feel when you find yourself in such situation?

I also think it would be wonderful if we could all speak just one language. It would be so much easier to communicate with each other. Though I do live in a community where most people speak fluent English, and many French speakers. I was travelling this summer and came across many different languages I did not understand. I also remember as a teen travelling to Europe and seeing some very attractive men that I could not speak with. LOL So one universal language would be great, or the ability to understand them all.

You are right. God might have given us only one language or the ability to understand all the languages in this Earth. Otherwise we feel like deaf and dumb in crowds where people are speaking in an unfamiliar language.

If we all spoke the same language it would be easier to communicate with each other and when we travel wherever we would go we would not have to worry about language barriers. We have to remember that at one time mankind all spoke the same language but because of rebelliousness God confused mankind's language and gave us many languages. However there is a prophecy that speaks of the future New World where again we will be united with having one common language. Look it up in the Bible at Zephaniah 3:9. What go you think?

I am fine with the fact that there are so many languages, I don't want this to change. This is good because this is one of the things that makes us different from each other. I am proud of my language, and I want it to live forever. And I am sure that almost everybody feels the same about his own language. How to decide which language to be the universal one? I am not bothered when I am with people who speak in a different language, so I don't feel bad. And God has given us one single language, but because of the Babel Tower he made lots of languages. I know my mother tongue, Hungarian, the official language in my country, Romanian, and also German and English. So I can say that I can live in this world and I am not bothered by the diversity of languages.

You never heard about the Babel Tower story? It is in the Bible, people wanted to build a tower which to reach the sky and God punished them by mixing the languages. Until then it was only one language, according to the Bible. I am a Christian and I believe what the Bible says, but I also think that the Bible is full of parables and we should not take everything word by word, but the essence of it. But I accept that in the beginning it was only one language and after God mixed them and created new languages, many people have coupled and languages were mixed and by this coupling of different languages created new languages which have evolved during the time and got many influences from other languages. It is a complicated thing, the evolution of languages.

Ya! It's really good having lived in a diversity of language still loving our own one. Everybody should love his own language and should be proud of it and should try to retain it. I think you know about the origin of language. Would you share some of your knowledge???

The tower of babel should have not been planned and built if you want only 1 language for the whole world. I wonder what language it could have been? That is based in the bible and i think it was true. The people wanted to build a tower to top the heavens! But at its highest peak, the creeky tower fell and God scattered the people away from each other. Before they are ONE people, ONE language... and now, we are divided. In history this means when God separated the continents. I can speak 3 languages. I cannot express myself that much too. And language is a factor. But I also want to learn more languages. I really love to learn Spanish and French. I think, I like to master all! So that I can speak to all! =p

With one spoken language, there will be no secrets, no fights, no misunderstandings and life would be a bit boring

I love to communicate with people and if I had to learn a new language to do it, I would at least try to learn it. That is why I am trying to learn English here all the time. It is interesting to read why God did a miracle with the rebellious men and changed their languages so that their project stopped that time. "...Jehovah saith, `Lo, the people [is] one, and one pronunciation [is] to them all, and this it hath dreamed of doing; and now, nothing is restrained from them of that which they have purposed to do. 7 Give help, let us go down, and mingle there their pronunciation, so that a man doth not understand the pronunciation of his companion.'" Genesis 11:6,7 Young's Literal Translation There is no doubt that God can do this kind of miracle in the opposite way, if he wants to. We will see what he does about the languages, when his plan to take away all rebels from the earth is fulfilled.

It is really amazing how many different languages there are in the world. This is one of the most amazing things in the world for me. I would think there are hundreds of different languages around the world. I was once visiting a country, a relatively small country, and I was so surprised to find out that there are 60 distinct different languages spoken there, not dialects, really distinct different languages.

I dont agree. I think it kind of cool having many languages. I do see you point of view though. True that sometimes we want to express ourselves and we cant because we dont know the language. But sometimes i think it is kind of cool. I live in portugal so i speak portuguese although my my mother toungue is english. I still speak english at home but portuguese with the locals. Sometimes i also find it hard to express myself but i like that i know more than one language

ya communication and commerce will be more fast and efficient, one common language will automatic cause one common written stuffs too.Maybe one day there will be a universal language converter like those in Sci Fic movies like Star Wars and Star Trek where the device can intpret and tranlate language.I think in the bible, God purposely cause the different tribes to speak different language to prevent them against God.haha.

I have never thought about this question before. Reading your post gave me much thoughts. I do agree that if the whole world were to have one language, it would make communication so much easier. We would not have the need to translate languages any more. However, I believe so many languages and dialect exists for a reason. Without it, we have something less to learn. It is interesting to learn about other languages and their different cultures. Although it is convenient to have only one language throughout the world, we might not have such an interesting life we have have today!

God did gave us just one language before. heard about the tower of babel? I have never really wished for that, that's just me. I find it the diversity of language really interesting. listening to others speaking a foreign tongue makes me wish i understand them but makes me want to learn it too. to me, it is like trying to learn about their culture since language is a part of a people's living. i also live in a country that has a lot of dialects, but it's a good thing we have an official language.

I do also feel like you. If there were only on language all over the world, we would not have any curiosity about others culture and we would not have studied different languages.
