I'll undergo dental surgery next week

Last Saturday, I had a severe toothache. I didn't have time to go to the dentist immediately because I have classes during weekends. It was only last Monday that my boyfriend accompanied me to the dentist. My gums are swollen. The first dentist I went to couldn't do anything because I can't open my mouth. She prescribed an antibiotic but I didn't feel it was working. So the next day, I went to another dentist and she changed the medication. Upon panoramic x-ray, the dentist found out that I have a wisdom tooth that was not able to fully erupt because there is not enough space. So it grew inside my gum and got impacted. It cannot be removed by simple processes, so they scheduled me for a dental surgery this coming Monday. Meanwhile, I'm taking a strong antibiotic and a prescription pain reliever. I hope this will end soon. I'm in severe pain...

Sorry to hear about the current situation you are in, it's never fun to have pain of any sort...and I can only imagine how annoying it is. Last year I had the fun experience of getting my wisdom teeth pulled out. I was referred to an oral surgeon by my dentist as I chose to be knocked out and sleeping.I wanted to only do it once so I had them take all 4 out at once. I was nervous, but in the end just think how much better you'll feel after recovery. Like you, I had to take some medication before going under. Wisdom teeth aren't fun, they are something you need to take care of as soon as you feel them coming up. I didn't have enough space in my mouth for any of them and they would have become impacted had they grown in. Just take it easy and I know you'll do fine. :) I didn't have any complications, just make sure to stick to doctor's orders regarding your recovery and you should be in good condition. It takes a little longer to recover when you go through a full surgery, but you will be groggy for a little bit and resting a bit for probably at least 48 hours afterward. It took me about 2 weeks until I could open my mouth fully again. Eating wasn't to fun, it was just enough to get something in me. Just make sure food doesn't get in to your holes where the teeth were taken out, you must wash your mouth out with water to keep food out. Anywho, I don't mean to write a novel here, but best of luck to you! Hang in there!

Oh my! 2 weeks! I don't have that much time. I always have to study. =( But then I have no choice. I need to fully recover. I'll have one tooth removed on Monday and the other 3 next month, after my final exams. I need to recover very fast. Thank you so much. I appreciate your informative response. Nothing beats getting insights from those who have been there. =)

Oh!!! sorry to hear that. Just hang on and you'll get the surgery successfully. Don't forget to pray. I will also include you in my prayer. I'm thankful also with your discussion because this informs me that it could also happen that wisdom tooth can be a problem.

Thanks a lot! I really need prayers. Yes, wisdom tooth can be this serious a problem when it doesn't erupt well and fully. It happens when you don't have enough space for it. It needs to be removed the soonest before something bad happens, just like what I'm experiencing now.

All the best and do recover soon. Toothache is surely severe pain and yes you'll need to let your gums subside before having operation to remove your teeth. I had my teeth removed when i was young as my mouth cannot fit the teeth naturally. It is a painful experience and the pain only goes away after 3 weeks my tooth was removed.... Good luck!!

Yes, I believe so. And she's the dentist of the hospital, so when, God forbid, anything goes wrong, I'll have the whole hospital administration to run after.

Oh wow, that certainly doesn't sound like much fun. :( I didn't have problems with my wisdom teeth and you have no idea how glad I am for that! I did have a tooth abscess once. It had rotted away from the inside and I had no idea! It didn't even bother me! But oh my goodness when it hit the nerve boy did I feel that! I was in so much pain I was crying and using orajel every 5 minutes just to make it to the dentist for an emergency visit! I ended up having the tooth pulled and it wasn't much fun, but I was glad when it was all over. It was much better than that pain. I can tell you, all in all I've had two teeth pulled and trust me, once it's over it's well worth it! I hope everything goes smoothly for you. Good luck and I hope the pain goes away!

I've been through several treatments but this is the most painful tooth problem I've ever had. I can't wait for my operation. I really want this thing to be pulled off.

I'm so sorry to hear what you are experiencing. It is really hard to experience pain of any sort and by just taking pain relievers will not really take the pain away instantly and it will only last for a certain time. it is also good that you have a great support from your bf. I hope you will be able to get through all of this. Good Luck.

You're right. The prescription is every 6 hours, but after 2 hours I already plead my BF to let me take another shot of pain reliever. But he knows better. He's a medical student. He makes sure I follow the prescription. So I wait for the time when I can take my meds again.

Never,i mean ever postpone dentist appointments.I did that,so I got in such pain,I wanted to die,It only gets deeper and worse. Finally,I thought the dentist chair,is a torture device, but I knew it was for my good, and until this day I have no tooth problems,so one of the things, you don't want to go cheap on,and absolutely you don't want to postpone it,that's going to the dentist. As a kid,i never believed in all those dentist stories, but they don't just make up stories like that,to get you frightened you know :)
