subtitles on a foreign film

I really can't watch films with subtitles. I find that I pay so much attention to the subtitles text that I am not actually watching the film itself so miss a lot of the action and performance.. I have tried to watch several films with subtitles but it's just not an enjoyable experience for me

I love japanese subtitles. They're like artful scribbles that appears at the lower part of the screen. Even though i don't understand japanese, i still put them on for the heck of it.

I tend to like all films with subtitles. Even the ones in English. I will turn on the subs if they are available. I have a small house and share it with 3 other people. I try to keep the TV low and the subtitles help with that. It helps me "hear" correctly what the people are saying. The only problem I have using the subtitles for regular TV programming is that they are always ahead of the people speaking.

There's a viewing public that won't watch a movie because it's not in their own language..Subtitles on DVD's broaden the market for moviemakers,as various language options are available on the discs depending on where in the world you are buying from..I don't have a very big DVD collection,but in there are Chinese Movies,French,and Spanish..as well as the majority which are English Language,but many will have other language and subtitle options to choose from..some movies get remade in a different market from the Original language Market..I have an original French movie,and also bought the American Remake of it for comparison..Those other Language Movies I'd watch with subtitles on,as I don't like dubbed language movies..

well for me, if it's an English movie, i usually disable the subtitle because it distracts my watching pleasure. i don't now why, i just don't like watching movies on dvds that has subtitles on it. In the case of foreign non-English movies, then i don't have an option but to put on the subtitle for me the understand the movie. :-)

I prefer reading subtitles when the characters in the movie talking very fast. It happens especially in the series on TV. Since they talk fast and the subtitles moving very fast it doesn't help improving my English I just try to catch the meaning and even try to understand it in my native language. I don't know if you have watched a series like CSI, then you can understand what I mean. There are some terminology there I am not familiar even in my native language and they talk very fast. But reading the subtitles anyway diminishes the pleasure you get watching a movie or series I believe. Original is always better if you understand most of what you watch.

Subtitles are my salvation. Even with English movies I turn on the subtitles. I don't enjoy movies in the theater anymore because there are no subtitles. As I have aged and as the tendency to deliver lines faster has become the norm, I find myself missing a lot of what is being said so I need the ability to read what they are saying as well as rewind to catch what I missed. I have never been a "speed talker", even when I talk fast. It bothers me when someone rattles on at breakneck speed because they appear insincere when they talk so fast. I sometimes wish I could turn on subtitles and pause/rewind buttons for real life. LOL...I know when my daughter is talking normally as opposed to when she reads because she always speeds up when reading.

Hello Gnomeland. I won't watch a film if it has subtitles throughout but I don't mind subtitles in certain parts. Inglourious Basterds and The Pianist both had a lot of subtitles but were both brilliant films but if I'd known they had so many subtitles I might not have watched them. I think subtitles are better than dubbing, sometimes a badly dubbed film can make it appear out of sync like a badly copied DVD.

I think it's a very good way to learn a new language, I myself learnt english basicaly by hearing movies and reading the subtitles which now i only do to laugh at the mistakes translators make. As for movies other than in english or portuguese (my first language) i don't mind the subtitles as long as the movie is good.

Usually, when the film is foreign and the only thing I can do is read the english subtitles to understand it, then I don't mind it. In fact, I get amused and I try to learn some foreign words from it. But, I dont mind an English movie with English subtitles. I have a listening problem, so it helps. But I get irked when the english subtitle is poorly written (wrong spelling, wrong transcription).
