Why is that people let their hedges grow,so that they are over a foot path

There are a few people that do not seem to care what their gardens look like and do not care what other people think to their garden. These are the people that let their gardens get soo out of control, that it makes it hard for people to walk on the path, aswell as use a wheel chair safely on the path. These are the types of people that are able to cut their hedge, aswell as people that are at home all day,how selfish is that.

I would think any hedge that becomes an obstruction on public walkways could be removed by the city.

I'm at home all day but I rarely have the energy to go and tidy my yard. I have an enormous block and it is usually out of control. I don't have the ability to spend hours keeping it up to scratch and I certainly don't have the money to pay someone to do it. At least, the foot path is clear.

The people that do not ensure that the path is clear of their hedge are the people that craze me,as there are alot of people each day that have to try to pass the hedges and stay on the path with their children, aswell as children that are in push chairs, people that are in wheel chairs.

Hiya jugs,
I would think that most People can do their own Garden and if they have a Hedge around it they will eventually cut it down to size as they have to. I know that because the House where I lived till I came here has a huge Hedge and they always protest so it has to be kept very low.

I know that there are alot of people that are getting really fed up with having to brush up against the hedge in order to keep their children on the path,as it has been raining aswell,it really do not help,as people are getting wet brushing up against the hedge.I think there are alot of lazy people that like to see the state of it rather than doing anything about it.

Hiya jugs,
Right about that when the Hedge overgrows all over the place it sticks out over the pavement sometimes and does´nt let you get past properly without getting scratched and wet if it has been raining.
We always had to keep our Hedge down because of the position of the Garden being near a Street Corner as for the rest of them well that was up to them.

I have a service that cuts my grass and does the landscaping. They want to come every week, but I can't afford that. They are supposed to come every other week, but sometimes it is 3 weeks before they come and my lawn is out of control. I can see people that can't take care of their lawns letting it go. If they are like me, they really don't have any control over it anyway. If the people are able bodied and still let it go, I can see it happening once in awhile. If it is all the time though there is no excuse. Most boroughs in the US, at least around here have laws that say you'll get fined if the grass is too high. I would probably have been fined but my house sits back from the road, so no-one can really see how high the grass is. There is only a little patch beside the driveway, and my neighbors usually weed wack and cut there.

The hedges that are really over grown on the paths are really bad and most of the people that live in these houses do not work, they are young anlthy,so to me they have all day everd heay day to cut the hedges. They can be fined from the council if they are not cut away from the paths, also they are classed as an eye saw.

Lol this reminds me of my neighbour's garden just outside - it's a jungle I swear rofl however he is an old lonely man so I can't blame him but I thought old people were into that kind of stuff. Anyway I like to keep my garden clean, I like gardens we have 2 gardens but our backyard is not very big though it is well looked after as it isn't too hard to look after. My mum especially is the one that deals with this, she likes to take good care of it and we even grow fruits and vegetables.

There are old people that do have no choice but to let their gardens get over grown, but when they are offered help by the council to do their garden they do except it.There are people that do not have excuses that do not do their gardens and they are the ones that make the rest of the estate look run down and messy.

My step-father did this with his back yard, and his hedges are so high that the city has to come in and trim them for him. I said, "Why did you let them grow so high?" and he said, "So that the neighbors wouldn't see me." Then I said, "But look at how much you have to pay the city to trim those suckers." I don't think that it is worth it to let hedges grow too high.

The council in our area do not put up with people having rubbish, over grown gardens/hedges that look a mess, they make them do their garden or they get to pay a fine and even a warning to sort it or find another place to live.Where we live there is like a six foot rule, nothing higher than six foot is allowed.

you may say that i am very unlucky to have no garden......my house is on the main road and there is no place even to park our car...we park it at some distance..this is becoz of the location..we live in the older and busy part of the city....which was not well planned and i wish that i shift soon to a new bungalow...where i can have some fresh air...and some greenery to see

haha =D Simple, they are plain lazy!! haha =D If not, they are not plant or garden lovers, whereby they just want the garden for showing off.. lol =D I hate people with such an attitude, only caring for themselves yet not sparing a thought for others. Since they decide to have a garden, they should take care of it, and not be affecting others with their laziness.
IF anybody were to take action, helping to nip it, the owners will turn round and be accusing them for crime. BUt that's what i always do, seeing something that;s not right, i will take my own actions.. haha =D

I do know that a few years ago the people of one council property were told to sort their garden out,or they would fine them and then they would charge them for the council having to clear it.These people thought they could not get charged,or fined as they were on state benifit, lol, they got a nasty shock, aswell as a hefty bill that they were made to pay.People that are tenants have to keep the garden tidy, aswell as hedges that they have trimmed back and not cause an obstruction.

The people that live in my road have looked after gardens aswell as their hedges are maintained. These people that have hedges that hang over public foot paths are young and they are at home all day as they do not work,as they are on benifits.I have to use a wheel chair if i go out,but thankfully i put the wheel chair in a car until i get to where i have to be.I use to help the elderly, aswell as friends with their gardens a few years ago,but now i can not,we took our hedge out years ago,so we do not have to worry about that. There are people like the council that do help disabled aswell as elderly people with the maintainance on their gardens if they want the help where we live.

I have no clue at all why there are people that don't take the time that is necessary to keep their garden in good shape. I do know that there are a lot of people that don't consider the fact that there are people in wheelchairs or pushing a stroller that need to get through at times, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me as to why they can't keep the edges in shape. It doesn't take very long at all and it makes the garden area a lot more attractive.

Lets be honest,it would not take long at all to cut the hedge, but there are some people that just are too ignorant to cut it back, aswell as too lazy.I have to use a wheel chair if i have to go out,i just think people like this who do not cut the hedge back,do not care about anyone other than themselves. There are alot of gardens that are a mess aswell as the hedge making it look worse,it makes the estates look a mess, aswell.

Report them to the Council! I used to work in Highways so I know that hedges overhanging a public footpath is illegal for the very reasons you describe. Imagine a blind person negotiating around a hedge overhanging the footway, it's unacceptable.
Whether or not the Council would do anything (what with the cutbacks and all that) I don't know but it's worth a try.

Oh well, at least something is happening. There is a house on a street running parallel to Mum's (on a corner) and it has a grassed area full of strewn "stuff." It's not as bad now so perhaps someone has complained about having to look at this eyesore every day.
As for us, we have a private alleyway that is shared with residents on a parallel street and there's a fridge/freezer that's been there since at least February. The Council came to do a clean last week but the fridge/freezer remains. The Council are well in their rights to leave it because, like I said, the alleyway is private. However, if the stupid idiot chose to leave it at the FRONT of the property instead it would've been taken away long ago for fear of it being a health hazard!!

They are lazy or don't have the right tools. Our ladylady has gottne very lax about the landscaping around our little fourplex. We don't really have a yard, but what there is frequently is grown over and tall with weeds. My husband got so irritated that he bought a weed eater to cut them down himself. She didn't even say thank you.

That sounds a little bit like laziness to me! I don't have a hedge now thankfully but I suppose it can be a lot of hard work when you have to trim it back! I suppose that more of an effort should be made as that is quite concerning when you have difficulty walking a wheelchair down a path! I don't think there's anything wrong with allowing a hedge to grow quite tall as a lot of people tend to enjoy the privacy that this gives them. However, they should at least trim the hedge back and keep it clear of the path.
I would probably take an hour, two at most to get things sorted out. I'm glad that those days are over for myself! I don't think I will ever have a hedge again! Andrew

I use to have a hedge years ago and i was always making sure that it looked really tidy, aswell as cut back further than where the paths started. After all i would not want to brush up against other peoples hedges,so noone would what to do that to mine.I think people are just soo lazy.

We have the same problems here in our street. Our next door neighbour have their trees overhanging the whole path. You have to duck your head to walk underneath them. There are others in the street that are the same. I too find it very annoying.

That is because they are "BUSY". You may of course read that as:
1. Lethargy - Weariness, Lassitude, Laziness & Indolence.
2. Callousness - Heartlessness, Cruelty, Insensitivity, Pitilessness & Lack of sympathy.
3. Bohemian - Free spirited, Nature loving & Unconventional.
Everyman to himself, I suppose.

There are those that invest all their free time continuing to maintain their properties in a full life time.
Then you have those to darn lazy I suppose that even if they can't afford to hire someone at least be considerate and chop them down out of the path. Especially since this can hurt a passerby.

I think that the people that have the problem with the over grown hedges are just too lazy,as these people do not work and think that other people will sort their hedges aswell as their gardens out.The man that was writing all the door numbers down to peoples houses with tatty gardens and over grown hedges will now hand the addresses to the council, which they will take it further,as these people are obstucting a public foot path.

There are not much gardens around here, but i have seen alot of similiar situations whereby ple will just let their plants keep growing. They don't bother to trim it at all. In the end, those plants will be dangling over the balcony, sometimes even outgrow to reach the next storey.
I'm actually wondering why don't the owners do anything about their plant? Since they are growing them, they should be plant lovers and yet they allow their plants to be grown like that??
