One thing every manager wants to learn is what motivates their employees to be successful, to reach for higher goals, and value a hard days work.
Most people think the primary motivation for employees is money. Give them more money and they will be more motivated. It is not as simple as that. Motivation is an emotion that you can not teach, train, beg for or force into an employee.
I’m slowly becoming a convert to the principle that you can’t motivate people to do things, you can only de-motivate them. The primary job of the manager is not to empower but to remove obstacles.
Can anyone share there views please?

You know, sometimes people skills can't be taught. it takes a lot of time, experience and say "heart" in getting to know your one downs.
each employee is different from another and your ways for one may not work to motivate the others.
for me, the secret is get to know your people. once you have come to know them, they will surely be easy for you to talk to, hence communication would be a good tool to achieve success in motivating them to perform for themselves and eventually as part of your team

Different people have different attitude and obviously have different work habits. But I think everyone can be motivated for as long as you treat them fairly and give them what is due. You also need to set an example as a supervisor or a manager of being a good worker. There are times that people need a tap in the back, a simple "good job' will do. There are also times that you need to instill discipline to those that need to be disciplined. Most importantly, treat every employee with respect regardless of status or position.

Motivating an employee is not a simple thing. The manager should know how to deal every employee, because they have a varied personality. But several things can motivate employees, such as respect, support to their responsibility, ask their opinion in their work involvement, give incentives and say thank you in every good accomplishments that will give credit to the manager.

hi juneramir, i think trust and respect are very important in motivating an employee. Genuine words or acts of appreciation are very much felt.

In many cases, employees are quick to follow their manager and equally quick to go astray. Employees will follow their manager lead/direction 100 percent of the time if they are motivated. There are ways to ensure your staff is motivated. Be as transparent as you can in the very beginning with your staff. let them know that you do not and will not have a favorites, you reward success and you are just one of the team but your duties are different. Lose any ego you may have and never be condescending toward your staff. They have long memories and they talk to everyone do nit micro-manage. Create camaraderie with your staff. Have one on one meetings with your individual staff members at least twice a month. Discuss performance, job expectations, attendance, goals and career paths. Make sure that their goals are inline with your expectations and manage them based upon the goals that THEY set. if they meet their work expectations, do all you can do to help them get rewarded (promotions, raises, upper management recognition). Hope it can help my suggestions...

Motivation is that which induces action or determines choice. You can motivate others by having faith in them.Motivate others to have confidence in themselves by showing them that you have faith in them. You can motivate others by setting good examples while working with him/her.A person is more than a mechanical body.He is a mind with a body.He succeeds or fails because he is or is not motivated. If you know what motivates a person-you can motivate him.For when you know what the personality traits of the individual are, what his environment is,and what motivates him,you can motivate that individual.

I think that the key to motivating employees is first to treat them fairly and respectfully. I always found that motivation wasn't that difficult. I believe that most people want to do a good job and really want to learn. I always tried to give each employee a special project that would allow them to stretch their talents but nothing that was so difficult that they could not achieve it.

Although in a supervisory role, I have found that it would easily to motivate people if you let your self be treated as their equal. Yes, you still have to keep your distance, and yes you still have to lead by example, but by being perceived as their equal it is easier to convey common goals, or common objectives. If they see that you experience the same setbacks, or the same reward as you go about your work.
