hello friends...
My sister wanted to buy Computer for her some work ( just general work related to documents ). So I told her to buy second hand computer as her husband already having laptop. I went with her for purchasing. I checked all the thing like processor , OS , hard disk space, ram but i didn't check CD Drive as i never thinks that computer can come without CD Drive..
Today my sister told me that she wanting to format its operating system.. so i went their when i checked CD drive area there wasn't any cd drive !!! I immediately call on that shop and asked him about it... And he told me that they never sell second hand computers!!!! :o I told him that I never thought computer without CD drives.. But now he is asking for 500 rs for cd drive :(
Is it true that second hand computer always comes without CD-Drive ??

Because you have bought an assembled or customized PC. Other components are options, adding them is another or additional costs. You should know that on your Office Receipts or the Checklist of your PC specifications that you have bought.
If you want to have CD or DVD Drive, either you buy a USB CD or DVD Drive or an internal CD or DVD Drive........

Others don't use CD or DVD drives anymore, they just use USB Thumdrives or Flashdisk (2 gigabyte, 4gb, 8gb or 16gb).... Or an External USB HardDisk Drives..... CD or DVD drives has a short life they are easy to breakdown. And storing CD's and DVD's are untidy or can be cluttered.
Anyway that's your computer, its your choice. Whatever.

It is good that you dont have the CD Drive on your Second hand computer. These CD Drives or the DVD drives for that matter, are quite delicate things and work on Optical media for reading and writing purposes (I will not be getting technical here). Now when you buy a second hand computer, chances of a damaged CD Drive are very high because the Lens that reads the disks gets damaged easily.
So it is better that you did not get one of these when you purchased that used computer. In India, these devices come with only 11 months warranty and there is none on the lens. Any shop that says that lens is covered in warranty, is bluffing. And yes, a new CD Drive is quite cheap at 500.00 INR. I dont find any shop selling these devices here at my place anymore.

In that case, please ensure that your used computer is compatible with the DVD drive or not otherwise it would be a waste of money.
One of my older PCs doesn't support the DVD drive. So better stay safe and consult the seller or better a Hardware guy. However if your PC supports XP, it should support the DVD too.
Cheers,
Sids.

If it is broken then they might have removed it. So it is possible. Anyway a cd drive is just cheap, but go for dvd writer. It costs a little bit more but it is more than worth the price.

i think the seller you meet is a profiteer.even though the computer is customized,i think it should have a cd drive, because it's so important.

I've heard of laptops being sold without a CD-drive (they're called Netbooks) but never a desktop being sold without a CD-drive. While I suppose it is possible, most second-hand computer shops I know will ship a PC with a CD-drive. I suppose this can vary from place to place though.

it may or may not. you have to check it before purchasing, you don't have other option than to purchase a cd drive.
if you go for a war with him it will be waste of time, instead buy a new one of good quality. if you buy it from him, there will be no guarantee that it will work good and again he may charge for repairing.

This is the first time I am hearing about a computer without cd drive .I think that the shop owner might have cheated you.He might have removed the cd drive and sold to someone else. Now I think you will have to buy a cd drive for that computer.

Well...i would not accept such a deal. Its not a luxuary...its a necessity. A pc cannot be complete without a CD drive. My company has given me a laptop...and i opted to go for a laptop with CD drive. I would not accept a pc or a laptop without a CD drive.

Yes, its true. Since it is second hand, you are not buying a full packaged computer. You will be getting all what the computer needs to minamally work. In this case, you will need a CD-ROM drive atleast to install the OS. You should be able to buy a cheap, functional CD drive at a second-hand store.

yeah.. but instead of purchasing second hand i am thinking to purchase new piece as i will not get any warranty on second hand piece.. Yes i know it later as it was my first experience of purchasing second hand computer. But surely i will not repeat my mistake again...
But don't you think that shop keeper should have inform me about Cd drive.. he didn't tell me that CD drive will not be available with it :(
