Since we've had our puppy since the spring, I keep hearing all different stories as to what to feed the dog. When I was little we always fed our dogs grocery store dog food like Purina and the dogs always lived a long life. Now I'm hearing that you should only feed the dogs the top of the line dog food that you can get from places like Petsmart and other pet stores. Our dog has had both grocery store brands and the more expensive pet store dog foods and to tell you the truth, the more expensive dog foods don't agree with our dog's digestive system very well. So I'd like to hear what brand of dog food you feed your dog and if you think it really makes a difference.

yeah! it does make a difference. for our dog we give her science diet. it smells good, and i think it should also be tasting better than other brands. there are eukanuba, and the more popular one - pedigree. but so far the most expensive we got was the science diet and our vet also told us its the best that fits our dog.

Well our dogs eat the "Diamond" brand dog food, and you can usually find it in any pet or feed store, thats the only brand we'll feed our dogs, they seem to like it and they digest it well. What you need to look for is what ingredients it has in it, and the FIRST ingredient listed is always the main ingredient, and make sure it doesn't say Corn, because dogs can't digest corn very well, to them its like trying to digest straw, thats why most dogs can't gain any weight eating that kind of dog food, they always look real skinny. Diamond dog food is made with some kind of meat, beef or chicken or bone meal products. Any dog food is good as long as the main ingredient isn't corn, you just have to read the bag. Hope that helps you.

I can't remember who makes Diamond but I've put mine on Blue Buffalo and they do really well with it, it's grain free.

I used to feed mine purina too but when you think about it corn is not a natural food for any canine. Now I feed them Blue Buffalo grain free .... online gives me discounts so I can afford it.

My dogs foods are brandless. We do have imported dog food like Purina but it is not within the reach of my pocket to feed my 4 dogs as these imported dog foods are expensive. We don't really have a special store selling dogs foods here. I often cook corn pellets with minced meat to feed them and sometimes I cook chicken parts for a change. They are doing well with the type of food that I gave them. I have four terrier dogs and since they are with fluffy hair, I have to make sure that their nutrition agree with their digestive system so that their hair look glossy and nice.

Yes corn is hard for them to digest its like them trying to digest straw. You just have to read the ingredients in the dog food.

When I had a pup I fed him nothing but the store brand, and one time I fed him IAM's and the poor puppy got really sick.
So I suppose it is like us humans where I have purchased my normal shampoo and conditioner, then one day I decided to go crazy and purchased Go Green type brands. Oh my god my head was so itchy and then ached from all the scratching.
So I suppose it does matter on your puppies digestive and sensitivity.

I have cats, not dogs, but my experience is that my cats began having skin trouble when on very expensive prescription food. I have been buying the cheap brand of canned food, supplementing the dry because two of them have dental problems. I give name brand, like Purina or Friskies, dry food. I am now making my moist food as I know what is in it. In the cans it is often mostly water and filler. I just started and my cats love it. As some one else said, there is less poop produced with this homemade stuff. I buy ground turkey or beef. I have heard never to give pork, and lamb is great for sensitive stomachs. I put dry oatmeal, and butter, and some carrots for now along with the browned meat. After it cools I stir in cottage cheese. My cats love it. There are lots of good recipes online.

Other than puppy chow I've never used anything but a store brand since our dog was a puppy. I can't see paying for top of the line for your pet when you cannot give yourself top of the line food products KWIM? Thankfully with age my dog will eat about anything he gets his paws on.

I dont have dogs right now i have cats. But i have had dogs in the past. I have heard that the better the food is for your pet the less they will go poop. If its full of junk then they poop more. So check out how many dropping they are leaving ina day. Its also best not to stick with the same kind all the time. When they had that pet food scare awhile back it was wheat gluton that was making them sick. Since then i make sure to get corn gluton. I actually made my own cat food for awhile. I would get canned fish, mackeral, salmon, sardines. Then mix it with veggies and rice and blend it. They loved it. I checking to see which of the canned fish they liked best by giving them a taste of each before mixing. They loved all except sardines. I took them out of my food list too. The other day i opened a can of salmon to make salmon patties and you would have thought i opened a can of can food.

im not exactly sure of most of the benefits but since we started feeding coconut, Royal canine, with rabbit and potatoes in it. we buy from the vet at 25 bucks for 8 pounds, she seems to not itch as much from allergies, as long as we try not to feed her humans food. but thats really hard some days. hope this helps

I think that what a lot of people are missing in this discussion is that cheap dog food is cheap because it's poor quality. Sure, there are foods that are probably priced much higher than they really should be, but a mid-priced "semi-premium" food is usually good for most animals. The cheap foods are filled with things that, over the lifetime of the dog, will add to problems that he or she may develop genetically. The semi- and premium foods are just better nutrition, so they have less things in them that are bad for your pet. Like if you fed your children McDonalds every day, instead of something more nutritious. Sure, it's food, but McDonalds every day is going to put your child on the road to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and all sorts of other problems.
Also, someone mentioned already, it IS true that a better quality food should create less poop. What that means is your pet is digesting more of the food. The cheap foods contain more non-digestible products that literally go in one end and out the other - so in this case you're paying for food that the dog is mostly going to poop out because he can't digest it. You have to feed more of that food in order to satisfy his nutritional needs, therefore. If you switched to a better brand of food you would be able to reduce the amount fed, AND have a healthier pet.
One other point, too. Not every animal is going to react favorably to every kind of food, so sometimes it's worth trying a month at a time of different semi- or premium foods until you find the one that agrees with your pet. My dogs eat Hill's Nature's Best Lamb and Brown Rice. It's all natural, contains no corn or wheat (which are not as good for dogs), and has only lamb and rice and vitamins in it. They are very healthy and happy, and I feed them a lot less than you would imagine.
Another point as well... regular deworming is important to keep from having to feed more food than the pet really should be eating. If they have a belly full of parasites, they are not getting all of their nutrition, so you end up feeding them more in that case, too. So the best thing I can suggest is regular deworming of your pets, and at least a semi-premium pet food like Science Diet, Iams, Pro Plan, Purina One or others like that.

We started out with one Chihuahua, but now I have three of them in my home. When we got our first dog, she started having trouble with her fur. She started developing a few small spots where her fur was falling out. It really wasn't that bad, but it looked like she had little white spots painted on her. I took her to the vet to get her shots, and while I was there, I asked the vet about it. He recommended that I start feeding her Purina Little Bites. I don't remember what we were feeding her at the time, but I immediately switched her diet to the food recommended by the vet, which is actually not expensive at all. Within a couple of weeks, the spots were gone, and her coat was full and shiny. She hasn't had a problem with this anymore. She had puppies a few years ago, and we ended up keeping two of them. They have eaten Purina Little Bites since they were puppies, and they have never had any problems at all.

I feed my dogs Authority. I get it at the pet store and it's about the same price as Purina One, which they used to get. The reason I changed is because my cousin told me about "animal digest", an ingredient in nearly every non-premium dog food. It's animal parts that can't be used in human food--chicken beaks and feet, intestines, the bodies of euthanized shelter animals, etc. That's disgusting!
The only other food I've found that they like and doesn't contain animal digest is PetsPride (Kroger) Dog Gone Deli which is a Kibble 'n Bits type food. Gus and Cookie both have some digestive problems. I add things like a few pieces of pear, some pumpkin, green beans and stuff to their food and that seems to relieve their problems. It gives them a bit more fiber and seems to sooth their bowels and stomachs.

My advice is to not give your dog anything with a brand name or label. This will be over processed, overpriced and could contain all sorts of nasty chemicals. Just buy your dog meat. Real meat from the butchers shop or supermarket.
We get pet grade meat from our butchers shop and the supermarket has things like liver and other horrible things that dogs love to eat in their pet food section in the meat area. your dog will be healthier and you will save money.

My dogs used to eat Iams and we liked it just fine but we had to down grade a bit after my daughter was born we couldn't keep spending $40 for a bag of dog food. The did do really well on the Iams and where less gassy but sometime you have to make cuts. We now feed them Pedigree small bites. They like it and really it is only my little dog that has some bad gas problems but that is just him. They are still healthy we feed a bit more than we did with the Iams. I had switched to kibble and bits for a bit and did we have a stinky house. It is like McDonalds for dogs. They like it but it is not really good for them. We try for no table scraps but it is hard with a 3 year old. My little dog also eats grapes and apples out of our yard. They vet said the grapes weren't good for him or really the apples but I can only do so much. They come from the neighbors yard. I would say to pick a food and stick with it because switching all the time can cause upset tummies.
