How do you ask someone to pay their debts?

I was just thinking how other people deal with this situation. If someone borrowed money from you, and forget to pay you back, how do you ask them to pay you back during the time that you need it most? I’ve been in this kind of situation and I always find it hard to ask for payment. My thought is that, we should all be responsible of our action, thus we should be responsible of paying our debts.

Though it may sound good that you’re lending money without asking them to pay back, the bad side of this, is some people is taking advantage of it. We are not millionaires, so they should think we also need money and that they have to return what they have borrowed.

I have lent money to people in the past and have regretted ever since. If you are soft with them they do not seem to understand, if you are harsh with them they turn more shameless. I just do not know now how to deal with them. I have decided never to lend money to anyone.

It seems that almost all who replied are having a hard time collecting the payment. So this is a tough situation anyone can face. I now think it is a matter of attitude.

wow that is hard.. for me.. i always have a hard time asking people to pay me back - and of course it is also really very hard whenever i ask them to lend me money too.. =( I do not know how to ask politely without offending the person i lend my money to... some are too blunt but i think that would put the person to shame right? so i do agree with you that people should yes, come to us and pay their debts without us asking for them to pay...

Well, think of it this way! When you made the decision to lend the money, you had no worries about the strength of the friendship. Now when you are wanting the money back, and its not forthcoming, you are beginning to worry about that very same strength. This is a wonderful test of friendship! If the friend eventually pays you back, this is a true friend! If you never get the money back consider it well spent. "Before borrowing money from a friend consider which you need most." ~ American Proverb.

In my experience, I have learned to ask when the person will be able to pay me back before I ever loan the money to begin with. Then, when the time draws near, I have learned to make a friendly phone call to ask the person if they will be able to repay me and tell them that I really need the money at that time. This generally does the trick.

It’s a good trick lynnemg; I actually have done the phonecall asking them if they can pay me back. And what will you do if you found out that they can’t pay you back on the time that they have promised? I don’t have a choice but to wait and wait until they have money to pay me back even up to the time that you need it most. I’ve learned a lesson here.

Actually, I also find it hard to ask someone to pay their debts. But sometimes, I just realize that i should not tolerate them, cause they might abuse my goodness to them. So, just try to approach that someone to pay their debts in a nicer way.

You’re right, sometimes they do take advantage. Yes collecting debt in a nice and polite way is all I can do, and still you have to be nice even if you found out that they cannot pay you, but I’ll make sure that I won’t let them borrow again.

It's a hard job to askying people to pay their debts. Good friends usually will keep their words and pay them back in time, but if there are some exceptions, from my experience, I have to tell them that I kinda lack of money, too, so you should pay me back, I'm sorry, but I have no choice, you know. I don't lend money to people what are not familiar to me. You see, you may not even find them when paying back date comes.

In my experience, i ask them politely to pay their debts. Yes, we should be very responsible for our debts and we should never forget or hide from the persons we borrowed money from. It's just not good, we don't know time will come that we will be the one to borrow money from our friends and they will be asking you to pay them back too.

I have this trouble too.I have no good way of dealing this problem. It seems that even you get the money back eventually but the friendship will be discounted then. So the wise doing is to think it over the next time when someone come to borrow money, don't lend or lend a little amount if it not urgent.

Just be cool..If ever they don't remember paying their debts and you need to talk to them about it just talk to them in a calm way. Try not to offend them or make them mad coz that will only result to bigger trouble...
