Do you think it's fair to impose an age limit for job applicants?

Job postings indicate a certain age limit as part of their qualifications. For certain positions, I sometimes feel that qualifications such as "not more than 35 years old" doesn't make sense because I feel it's but proper to primarily review one's qualifications based on skills and expriences and not too much on age. What do you think?

I think it will depend of the company's policy and criteria for hiring people with ages that will fit their needs the most convenient way.
Many companies already have their strategy defined and maybe involves hiring people with a mix of age, skill, experience to fulfill the need they would like to cover in the long run.
Although at some other places it is very common to hire even senior citizens due to the fact of the job description, costs, whatever works.
I used to go along with complaints from people that would say how unfair companies are because of that issue, but after building my own criteria, plus what I learned at business school in the administration field, I understood it's simply a matter of strategy.

Setting a age criteria with some form of explanation would I think reduce the complaints of being age discriminatory.

I think it's fair. Every employer wants best person to work for him.
Specifying the age limit will have number of factors involve.
Like
1. Nature of work (where physical strength is required)
2. Over qualification as per the post.
3. Stress involvement (which old people can take)

I think it's good to set an age limit then make a short explanation as to why.

Hi hippiemomdiaries,
For me age limit for job applicants for a certain job is fair particularly those jobs that needs the dexterity of a young applicant. Dexterity wane off after 35 but for jobs that requires good thinking and analysis, even beyond 80 you can still be better than those young bloods. This is evident in the Senate, Justice and Congress many members are advance in their age but still sensible enough to work.

I kind of disagree, age is not really a factor in terms of dexterity. I think the burden should be on the employer to decide or conduct tests and medical exams if the work needs a specific physical requirement.

hmm i too have same doubt on age limit . it doesnt have any sense or impact when it is 30 for general and 35 for reserve category . in todays's days most of the people are settling down before 25 years at any of the platform .
