Should we smile even when we are sad?

Hello, Sometimes everything seems so funny and comforting that we become happy at once. But there are times when everything seems to go against us. You really can't be happy all the time. Some people prefer to impose happiness to themselves. It's kinda overriding mechanism. You start pretending that you are happy, you continue pretending that for some time, and slowly your mood changes from a negative to a positive way. Does pretension can have this effect? Does the secret of remaining happy is in denying that you are sad? What do you think my friends? Should we smile when we are sad? Thanks in advance for your responses. God bless you.

We could try to smile when sad, biswa. I cannot see the use of it, though. You have that emotion for a reason. Good for people who can achieve smiling when sad, i can't. TATA.

well I think its a good habit to stay smiling even during the time of hardship. maybe getting used to it will create it as a second habit and keep you happy always. well I feel comforting when I talk to someone when I am sad. It takes the load of my head.

I know what you're saying. This works more like an overriding mechanism. You just refuse to be sad. You replace the sad feelings forcefully rather than allowing it to grow unconditionally. But this require immense mental strength. Except for a few severe instances this method really helps almost all the time. Thanks. God bless you.

There are people who are good in pretending there are some who are not. I am included on the people who can't pretend. When my mood shifted from good to bad you can see it clearly on my face. My friends avoid me when I am not in the mood to talk with them and some are there to tease me hard that is why i hate some of them. Anyway, i can still be happy or smiling when i am sad inside. At work I want to be professional so despite of what stress I am feeling during work, I need to talk with co-workers and clients in a professional way even if sometimes they are the reason why I am feeling stress. I have no choice but to face it like that as that is part of my job. Some does like this, when they are sad, they do not entertain the feeling, instead they think happy, do happy , read funny jokes, looks at funny picture to shift the mood to happiness.

Nest time you feel like frowning again or think that there's nothing to smile about, consider the health benefits of your action. Give yourself a smile in the mirror to start your day off on a positive note.It will improve your mood, your energy levels, your health and your life.

Hi, I completely agree. Smiling for no reason even has a strong reason sometimes. It teaches us to be happy even about petty things. We learn to be happy even without being rich, or being accomplished. One really can't do anything worth in one's life unless he is satisfied with what he has at present. I really liked your response. Thanks. God bless you.

Hi! When I'm sad, I just couldn't smile. I'm a person who can't hide emotion. If I'm really sad, tears are just flowing down my face. And when I'm really happy my smile is from ear to ear, lol. Small things makes me happy, I guess I'm just a happy person. Happy MyLotting! God bless you too.

Hi, You mean you have overall happiness, but occasional sadness. I got it. That makes you a positive person. If you can't hide emotions you don't have to. But sometimes it becomes necessary to deny the existence of pain even when you know it's painful. This is done by immense mental strength. You start by looking at the positive sides of things. An optimistic man is able to extract positive things even from the most distressful situations. Then he just ignores the negative things and keep thinking only about the positive side. This slowly relieves the pain and makes the sorrow disappear. I know it's difficult, but it's not impossible. Thanks. God bless you.

Naturally one will not be able to smile when sad inside. But if we think deeply that our sad mood is far less than the FRIEND/GUEST or any such person in front of us. we can sure make a smile. and this will enable us / help us to get out of the mood. We are sure though we are sad we are not going to be like that for ever. so why not now. SMILE :)

True indeed. There is a connection between your facial muscles and your mind. It's a direct connection and goes both ways. The state of your mind will definitely be reflected on your face, unless of course you're a reformed liar. On the other hand, forceful smile often relieves stress and improves the state of mind. Most of the habits that we grow start start in an imposed manner. We first impose a habit that we think is good. At first it doesn't go along with our original nature, but still we hold on. Then finally we develop the habit. Forceful smile also does the same. It originates outside then works all the way to your inside.

I think this is a very difficult thing to do, I certainly could not do it! I don't think there will ever be a day whereby you are happy and smiling all the time, this would be nice but is unrealistic I think. I suppose the best we can hope for is just do the things we enjoy whatever that may be! For me it is regular reading as well as cycling and swimming. I also love watching movies and listening to music, all these things keep me happy and content inside. I cannot remember the last time I smiled to tell you the truth! I think I will add a smile to my response in this discussion though!Andrew

Oh dear - I thought your response was logical - I mean "the best we can hope for is just do the things we enjoy..." but not remembering when you smiled seems very sad indeed. Do you sing? If you sing, and if you get a note right, you would feel happy, even if nobody appreciates it. :)

Smile or not when someone is sad, depending on their personal. If I am, I have to smile, however my mood. Because I have always looked cheerful in front of anyone.

Hello biswa, we should try to take all situations lightly, even in the worst situation, and quite naturally, we should smile even when sad!!! Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Professor. .

Hello, Yes, you are probably right. We must not let our sense of humor die. It's this sense of humor that gives us hope. It's the air supply. You can use it effectively against all adversities. For example if someone is trying to insult you and you're ego is badly wounded, you may decide to take things lightly and get over of the grief. One must be able to laugh at oneself. This is the secret of staying happy and unattached. Thanks. God bless you.

biswa, I have mastered how to mask the unhappiness I have lived in my life. The exterior side of me emulates a great deal of happiness, yet my inner feelings are completely empty. It has been called life, no matter how much I have tried to fight against all odds, life has had a tendency well to be so darn hard. I met someone many years ago who told me, as women we do have to tell and or show the world how we feel and or when we are sick, her words stuck so deep inside that I have learned that the world does not need to know how I feel at all times. So I have masked all of my inner feelings to where no one usually knows how I feel. Although my habitual smiling and great sense of humor covers up the feelings the inner feelings are very over-powering.

My attitude is basically quite simple, I have to survive and I have to provide for me that is, so no point in allowing my inner feelings intrude with my goals in life. Not easy, trust me I have my moments behind the scene, however I never, ever imposed them on any one. Trust, faith and love for God gets me through each day.

A russian professor has created a system of self-recovery, to deal with incurable deseases and the smile is at the centre of this. Here is a link to one website about him. http://norbekov-europe.com/ In one of his books he describe a "Monastery of smile". There they were forcing people to smile as a part of the treatment. If you have time you may check the info and you may learn to do some of his exercices too.

Well, I do agree with you that smiling will change your mood. I was shocked to learn that smiling actually does give you more joy. A study was actually done on this, as I learned in psychology. They state that your brain and muscles work in reverse. Normally, a person would think they are happy, then use face muscles to express it. But scientists confirmed that if a person smiles first, the brain would alter mood since the person is using the same muscles.

Being optimistic is totally different from pretending to be happy. When we have a positive outlook in life we always see the good things in everything. We can see good coming out of a negative happening. Optimistic people also get sad but only for a few minutes because after a while they realize there's no use mopping and it's better to be smiling. And it's not pretending at all.

I think for one who wishes to have a positive vibe everyday, he/she has to keep on smiling and forget the problems even for just a short period of time. I tend to pretend that im happy, im denying the fact that im sad to be able to face the day. I try to be strong and show a smile to everybody so as i won't be letting them worry about my real feelings. I try to always keep a smile no matter how painful or sad my real emotions are.

Its difficult for me to do this pretend. but some time met the sad thing I will try my best to encourage myself smile pass it under this this feeling make my inside heart highlights the empty and sad, this feeling is worse. maybe smile at the sad moment can reduce the depressed mood but at last still no use for the problems so if I am in sad I will forget to smile when I am alone, but when I am in sad in front of my family I will remind myself to smile because smile can give my family members a belief that I can pass all the difficult.

Yes, we should. One thing good about joining this forum, myLOt, is that it is making me more positive. This is due to the suggestions and advice that co-myLotters are giving one another. It does not matter if the advice pertains to you, you just read posts and you will find good advice about life. One advice is quite simple : smile and make other people smile too. We should not be wasting our time frowning, life is too short. Not easy, found it out myself, but ....

the same thing you said about the overriding mechanism was there in a newsletter from havard as far as i remember. actually we can control our mood by smiling forcefully and gradually our mood changes but when there is a melancholy deep down the soul the smile is just a mask to hide the real you from others because they will spoil your genuine feeling. obviously if we are sad i don't believe to show it to others so wear a mask

Yes absolutely We should smile even we are sad.Smile is a very important thing in life. When we smile, our negative mind starts to deactivate and our positive mind starts to activate and it always tells us dont worry everything is fine or gonna be.We should remember one thing whatever are we or wherever are we in life its because of only one person and that is YOU. and we are the product of our thinking !!
