What is the best cure for the common cold?

The common cold is so common, many consider it as a very light form of sickness (if ever it is considered a sickness at all), and yet it brings so much discomfort. Runny nose, watery eyes, dry throat, some spells of cough, feverish...you can name all the forms of discomforts that you feel when you have a cold. Since we really can't use it as a very valid excuse to call in sick from work or even in school, is there some form of instant relief or remedy that could immediately remove all the discomfort? Of course, I prefer the natural way, but forms of medicine recommendations are also welcomed in this discussion.

I feel that inhaling steam makes me feel a bit better, as does drinking a mug of hot Lemsip.
Not eating or drinking dairy products also helps a bit, as diary products produce Mucus.
There are no magic cures for the common cold though, just ways to help you cope a bit more and make yourself feel a little better.

Lemsip has been around for years. Don't know if it is available outside the UK.
Lemsip is an over-the-counter medicine for colds and flu.
It comes as a boiled sweet which you suck to release moisture, or a powder which you add to hot water and drink as a hot drink.
It comes in honey & lemon flavour and I find that it clears up my synusses.

wow, thank you for presenting all these natural options. I only know #1. I didn't all the rest. With all these natural methods, who needs medicines?

Actually there's no cure for the common cold. You can only cope with it until your body naturally fights it and wins.
The medicines for the cold that you can buy in pharmacies are to make the sympthoms lighter and make you feel better until your natural body defenses can win against the invasion that is making your body feel bad.

I really don't resort to over the counter medicines anymore coz I think it would do more harm than good eventually.

Rest and lots of water. Taking zinc and drinking powdered vitamin c is good too. They both help your immunity.

Increase fluid intake is what the pediatrician of my kids often prescribe. So I guess, it would be good for adults too.

I used to take the natural way, drink more water and hot soup. It will surely makes you perspire. Water helps to make our body temp at low level. Paracetamol is the usual advise for common cold. Take more juices as Vitamin C source. It will help too. Hope this will help.

There's nothing that works faster than a ton load of water intake, lots of bed rest and sleep. And peeing often. Works for me everytime. Cold is always gone in a week. Of course I love to put in a drowsy cold pill here and there to my water diet when I'm sick because the drowsy pills make my sleep so much better. But the water and rest alone should work fine. Green tea also helps a lot!

It' best to take precautions in order to avoid the common cold but of course it catches everyone at some point. Anyways when I get sick I always make sure my feet and neck are wrapped warmly(this is very important). I also tend to drink more orange juice since.
I really don't like taking medicines because they make me drowsy. One more thing: I always try to get enough rest.

From my personal experience when a cold hits you it stays a day or more than that depending on how much vitamin C and other vitamins is available in your body to combat it. When I catch cold i increase my vitamin C intake into 1000 mg more than that is not good for the body. Drinking lots of warm or tepid water helps to loosen the phlegm build up. Rest and Sleep also helps to help me recover faster.

Yes, common cold is so irritable, like other says no exact medicine to cure immediately for common cold. More liquid like water, juices and add some fruits to prevent and cure cold. Relaxation and more sleep are the best to rejuvinate your body. I agree with others that cold is viral so more rest and relax are needed. I hope this can help to you.

I dont really do anything to treat my colds. When I was in high school I used to take comtrex. That worked really good to make me feel better while I had the cold. Then I quit taking medicines and started taking vitamin c when I had a cold. That worked pretty good to. It helped my cold go away faster. Now I just deal with the colds and dont take anything. I have heard that chicken noodle soup helps improve colds. I never believed it but they did a study on it and I read about it in a magazine that its true.

There are no real cures for the common cold, as you and fellow mylotters have already mentioned.
What works for one person may not work for another.
It's alll about coping with the cold and trying to feel as good as posible until the cold bug has gone.
One home rememdy that I believe to work (for me any way) is to sweat the cold out of you.
Have a hot meaL with plenty of spices, then go to bed with some thick clothes on, let the heat sweat the bug out of you.
This way certainly wont be to everyones taste, but, like I said , what works for some may not work for others.
Have a warm day.

I am more into natural way of healing. I do take commercial medicines when i could not really manage my body at all, or when i feel its necessary to see a doctors. About this cold thing, i guess the best way to get it rid instantly is by using liquid therapy. Drinks lots of water, make some lemon juice and drink it regularly, of course avoid very cold water. . Take a bathe regulary as this one is cause by bacterial infection... Wash hands and stay clean the whole day! So far i am thankful that i really do not suffer from cold except my back pain. . . Have a blessed sunday

I think the best cure for common is taking the desired medicine for it. Taking medicine will surely help you to heal faster. But sometimes we need to consider that these medicines will have some effects in our body. Sometimes we are dependent enough to take medicines even if it is needed to take medication. Some colds can be healed without taking medicines.

Just stay rested, take a steamy shower, vitamin c also will do. Apply warm packs for your sinuses and sleep with an extra pillow under your head to help with the drainage in nasal passages. ^.^
