One of the big issues about people with website is about getting their site notice in cyber space. With so many sites ( in the range of billions) it is not easy to have your site notice.
I know one way is to get your ranking within the first page of google search engines, which is some time know as SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
The other method in viral traffic (or word of mouth). ***I wonder what attracts to a site and be good enough to spread the word to your friends? ***
What other method do you know to help get your website noticed?

Well, I believe that content is always king. Write contents that are informational and interesting and sooner or later, your website will generate a significant amount of traffic.
You must be consistent and you must writ regularly in order to entice your readers to come back for more. It will take time -- a lot of it, so be patient!

you are right most people return to a site for content, however content from a single source might not be attractive as multiple source of income like mylot, and many forums. People would like to contribute, so I am not too sure how I would be able to get people to want to write about their experience on my site. Do you have any idea?

Usually I'll post on Twitter whenever I update my blog. Alternatively, I'll crosspost my entries from my own domain to Livejournal and Dreamwidth cause that's where my friends are. I discovered that when you do that, your posts get noticed by search engines quicker cause Livejournal and Dreamwidth are trusted sites.
This is for blogs though. I don't know about other sites.

I spent time finding friends on Twitter, talking with them, an from there, expanding my circle of friends to include my friends' friends. I also follow people and causes that interest me. It's a faster process than you think but it cannot be automated and it requires you to be sincere about what you're talking about.

Our writing group has a Facebook page and I have a Twitter account. I am constantly forwarding our articles to Twitter. I also put a link at the bottom of my emails (signature). I think you can use it in your signature anywhere as long as the body of the text is not considered spam.

Our writing group is a local group, not online. I wrote about the benefits of joining a writing group here: http://writinghood.com/writing/10-benefits-of-joining-a-writing-group/
We have a website and a blog and we meet twice a month. If you want to join a local writing group inquire at your local library and book stores. Or start your own. I wrote about that here: http://writinghood.com/writing/how-to-start-and-manage-a-writing-group/
Good luck.

I started a blog I no longer work on a couple of years ago and I admit inviting traffic to it was hard work. I prepared a nice site with what I thought was great content but nobody knew it existed! I joined as many social sites as I could and made sure my link was everywhere. I found that commenting on other people’s blogs and leaving my link on the comment invited many visitors. The key is to have great content or to be selling a great product and after a lot of hard work, eventually word of mouth will bring people to the site, it’s not easy though...

I haven't made anything from my blog and that is the reason I gave up the hard work required to bring traffic to the site. I can honestly say that I make more money on MyLot than I have ever made out of my blog! To me it hasn't been worth the work!

Well I guess I am not thinking of making money, I would to make my site successful. If it can make money then it is a bonus. Mylot is giving away money and still making money, I just wondering is it that lucrative to earn online. However that is not my priority now. Just want to get people be there and enjoy.

Article writing with links to your site is a great wait to gain exposure. Sign up for social networks, forums etc. Make sure to sign up with blogcatalog if you have not already done so. Those are some techniques I use that have worked well.

Sure. Just go to the website www.blogcatalog.com. It's really easy to navigate. Basically you add a profile pic or avatar, a description of your blog, and your url of course. It is free, there is an upgraded option but I have no need for it as of now. Participate in some of the disscussions and you will gain friends, and followers. It is a really neat site. When you sign up make sure to look at the widgets you can add to your blog or website they are free as well. If you have any other questions let me know.

Five and hence, I am still struggling with it. I am earning much less than others who are inferior than me just because of the low traffic. I just cannot generate more traffic! I was being told that good content would drive traffic but nothing ind of works with my site.

I don't know much about SEO at all other than putting in proper tags?
Mine is from word of mouth.....or more like typing on the keyboard in places like facebook, twitter, social websites such as gather, sidetick, and others.
Networking says a lot....especially if you are letting others get to know and trust you.

Join forums, and then put your website url in your forum signature. Every time you post an answer, your signature appears.
Offer free downloads, such as free making-money ebooks.
Write articles in Xomba, Snipsly, and other article aggregators, and put your links towards the end of your article.
Always answer comments on your blogs so your readers will come back to visit.

I think we can help each other in term of traffic, I am curious what is your site would be about? I have plan and talk to people about my current site I think for a good 6 months and it is just about to take off. It took a little more than I expected so I hope it would be good.
Anyway my site would be about traveling and it is a something I think most would love.

I think if your website is a blog, then you can try to use blogping, if other than that you can subscribe to StumbleUpon and stumbling your website, promotion of your site is a must, you must submit your site to all the major search engine as well. You also create a lenses for your website on the squidoo. For more advance, you can create a video related or with attractive content and put a link on the video for your website. I think there are many more way you can do. Just look around and you will be able to find out.

Interesting question. I started a website in March, 2010.
You can view my philosophy on the testimonials page there.
I suppose it depends on the purpose of the site in regards to attracting views/viewers/friends/customers etc.

I think there are many steps prior for a website to be successful. Posting your website to popular blogs, writing articles, get your site listed in so many open directories available, promote through social media sites such as facebook/friendster/twitter/youtube....
There are enless ways to get there, only determination and a good content as well as regular updates on the website will keep visitors returning for more visits.
Best of luck to you and hopefully you'll get your website noticed :D
