Snake Surprise...

Ok, there are a few things in life that I can’t stand…bugs, bees, mice, rats, roaches, snakes, spiders…pretty much everything creepy.
You can imagine my surprise then when a few weeks ago Hubby goes to the kitchen and starts yelling. I go in there and he says he saw a SNAKE go under the fridge. At first I thought he was pulling my leg or hallucinating but just to be on the safe side I called my oldest brother and asked him to come and hunt it down. In the meantime I perched on the table where I knew it was safe. Well, my brother rooted under the fridge and finally I told him to pull it out and he found nothing. Then with a flashlight he spotted it. It was coiled up in the corner with it’s head up…I just about wet myself. I told my brother to scoop it up and put it back outside…then I locked myself in the bathroom.
What a lot of ppl don’t know is that my oldest brother used to love to throw snakes at me, in my hair, in my bed…you name it. He loved hearing me screech and go nuts. It’s no wonder I’m terrified of them. I don’t know how it got in the house but I’m glad it was found and gotten rid of. Can you imagine if we hadn’t found it and it had grown up under our fridge?
The pic is of the kind (gardner snake) and about 6” long.
Have you ever had a snake in your house? Are you scared of them? What would you have done if you’d found one?

Hey there twoey, sorry for the late response. It sucks that your brother threw snakes at you when you were growing up. On the plus side at least he's willing to help get rid of them for you now.
I've had a snake in my house before. It was brought in by me intentionally.
I wouldn't normally bring a snake in or even touch them as I'm scared of them myself. However, I braved it for my kids. Good thing it was just a baby, otherwise I would have never picked it up! LOL
I don't know what I'd do if I found one in the house. Though if it was a rattle snake I would definitely freak out!
Happy mylotting!

I used to look for garter snakes. They were so cute! Well, okay, to me they were cute.
I remember back when I was in about 2nd or 3rd grade, there was a boy who was pure punk and was always teasing the girls any way he could. He once was following me when I was walking home from school and told me there was a snake on my head. I laughed and told him to shut up. He said it again, "There's a snake on your head. If you don't believe me, feel for yourself!" Okay, I put my hand up on my head and, sure enough, there was a snake on my head! I had a hat on which is why I didn't feel it.
I'm sure I disappointed that boy greatly because I wasn't scared at all. It was just a little garter snake, just like the ones my friends and I would go looking for. I even had one of them bite me on my finger once but it didn't hurt at all. I think that's why I wasn't afraid of garter snakes.
BUT, we have a rat snake in our yard now. This guy is probably about 5 feet long. I only saw him once but have heard him several times. I don't mind him being in the garden because they eat rodents and we have plenty of rodents around here, just dying to get a tummy full of whatever I'm growing in my garden. The snake eats those who don't know he's there and scares away those who do so, at least if the weather cooperates, I should have a great garden with my snake buddy out there.
Of course, I do give him a wide berth! Anything that bites and has sharp teeth are on my "keep at least at arm's length" list.
I just hope he STAYS out there this winter! I'd freak if he came inside to stay warm but still, somewhere in the back of my mind, I'd probably be happy that he was inside because we get our share of field mice and similar critters coming into the house in the winter to stay warm. The snake would definitely help keep them at bay or at least control their numbers.

Hi. twoey68. I can see why you were so terrified. This would scare me too, especially just to know that there is a snake that is underneath my refrigerator. I am glad that your brother got rid of this snake too. This makes my skin cringe, just thinking about it too. I have never had a snake that was inside of my house that I know about. Maybe when I was younger, snakes probably crept into my grandmother's house though or around on the outside of the house. If this snake had to have grown, up under your fridge, I can't begin to tell you how scary that would be. Stay safe and take care of yourself!

Hello twoey.
I have nothing against most bugs and spiders - i try killing them, or kicking them out, but i can't stand for wasps - those scare me and i really don't like them. Snakes and rats are not exactly my favorites as well, but i do like seeing snakes at the zoo where there is a protective Plexiglas separating the two of us ;)
I haven't had any snake in the house, as i live in an apartment and they are pretty rare in the city, but i wouldn't welcome one either. What your brother did to you in your younger years was quite cruel, but now i know why you called him to hunt it down :)
With respect,
Alex

The last time we found a snake in our house was a few months ago. It was a small garter snake as well, about 25" long. I caught it and took it outside. I particularly don't like snakes either, but they help the place to control vermin in the area.
About the only things I do not like are Spiders...

I hate snakes too! When I was 7 we moved down to this small little town where we had 4 acres of ground that was half woods. So you can bet we saw a lot of snakes. My dad has sheds in the back and there is a big black snake that always is up in the rafters. I just to have dreams about snakes biting me quite often. But in all the years my parents have lived there we've never been bitten or even come close to it. I've even stepped on one once and it just took off into the weeds. One time my mom started screaming and there was a black snake in the kitchen. It was probably about 4 feet long. Dad got a big pole or something and picked it up and took it back outside.

My daughter had a rattlesnake on her back poarch. That was a scary scene. I went to get a big pot out of the closet one day and found that a snake had been coiled up in it at one time cause i could see the outline of the coil. I have yet to figure out where it went.

My brothers were repeatedly told not to leave the basement door open. Did they listen? No. We had a skunk in our basement once and he didn't want to leave. WE had a gardner snake in our washing machine, 2 doors left open, basement and the washing machine. It was a hot, sunny day. The snake was caught in the yard by the heat of the day. Instead of going to the stone wall and shade trees, he spots a nice looking cave and in the cave is a little small crawl in space just perfict for him. My Mom almost put the laundry in on top of the snake. What a surprise that snake would have had with all that soap, water, and aggitation. Mom had Dad take it out of the washer. My brothers got yet another lecture and this time my Father kept locking the basement door on them and wouldn't let them have the key. He did that for a little while after the skunk incident, but he didn't let up this time. We could have had a rabid animal in the basement.

Dang, if that head was a little wider, I'd think it was a rattler. Most snakes, I wouldn't be up on the table. They don't freak me out that much. But if it there was any possibly chance that it might be poisonous, I'd get everybody out of there, and let somebody else deal with it.

I've never actually seen a snake in our house, but I know that there had to have been one in here at least once because about six months ago I went into the laundry room to do a load of laundry and right there in the floor in front of the washing machine was a snake skin. It freaked me out but I have to say that I initially thought that it was a prank because it was on April Fools day that I saw it. I didn't like it at all though.

Eeks!!!I am terrified of snakes and we have alot of snakes around my husband thankfully gets rid of them but some get away before he can. I don't like them, never had and nobody threw them at me. Because either me or them wouldn't be around..lol When I was 13 I went to a outhouse in the middle of the night and a copperhead was coiled up in the corner of the outhouse..I refused to ever use that outhouse again, and I don't think my feet hit the ground once as I ran all the way back to the house. When I was 15 I had a snake drop accross my feet in the middle of the night. I think my step dad thought it funny to put a black snake in the attic but I had a hole in my ceiling..and it dropped right out onto my feet..lucky because If it landed anywhere else I would have had a heart attack.. I was out of bed and my room in less then 3 seconds..Screaming there was a snake... And where I live now..we see them copperheads, black snakes, blue racers, rattlesnakes and water moccasins. "Shivers" I often wonder why God ever made them..but a preacher told me there is a reason for everything God makes..I would just like to know why..

Darn. With that title I thought it was going to be a recipe!
My favorite story is that my family had a cabin by a river that we used for outings. I walked in one day holding a snake by the tail, asking, "Mommy, is this snake poisonous?"
Then there was the time I was walking in the fields (this time as an adult) and the trail was just matted down grass. I saw movement under the grass, no more than two feet beside me. A huge snake that must have been at least five feet long was going in the opposite direction I was going.
I became very aware of where I was stepping. And I took another trail out.

I've had snakes in my house and also had them as pets. I love snakes!
A snake in your house means no bugs or mice and most are more scared of you than you are of them. I understand your fear of them, considering what your brother did, but snakes are your friends, even the poisonous ones. Leave them alone and they'll gladly stay out of your way. They are excellent pest control.
They can be dangerous, though. They should be treated with respect because they can harm smaller things like cats, dogs and babies if they are big enough. I don't understand people who keep large snakes in the same house as children or small pets, that is gross negligence.

He used to throw snakes at you? Wow that is traumatising! No wonder you are terrified of the creatures! Fancy finding one under your fridge...That would have me a tad nervous. I’ve actually touched a domestic non-poisonous snake at my local shopping centre and felt very safe in fact I have lovely photos of us with the snakes around our necks. I wasn’t afraid in a safe environment but if I found one that I didn’t know anything about in my house I would not be so relaxed that’s for sure!
