It stands for "Distributed Denial-of-Service" attack. Basically, it is used to take down servers hosting websites, games, or pretty much anything else. It can be used to take down home internet connections too. When you hear the term "DDoS" it is usually to do with large botnets, which are large networks of hacked PCs that all connect to one server, usually an IRC server, and await commands. From the IRC server, the owner or owners of the botnet can send commands through the IRC channel to all the bots connected, and command them to flood specific IP addresses on specific ports in specific flooding techniques. The average person may think it is complicated and hard to do, but it is in fact extremely easy to do, and anyone using this website right now could learn how to build a botnet and DDoS any IP they wish within a few days. May I ask, why do you want to know what DDoSing is? Do you plan on learning how to perform DDoS attacks, do you want to protect your website from it, or do you simply want to know what it is for general knowledge? :)

Ifbux has a message posted that they are being DDoS'd, and we all wondered what was going on. Thanks, and thanks to nscanada for starting the discussion.

I was not quite sure what it meant and so I went over to Wikipedia and found the interpretation very interesting as it tells you how it attacks and how to avoid. This may be helpful to you too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

As what the other poster said, it means a distributed denial-of-service attack. In simpler terms, it's the most basic form of Internet attack. Basically a DDoS attack takes out a website by overloading the server with requests. Most DDoS attacks are automated via botnets. These botnets send a simple "ping" request to a site. The server then sends a "pong" back to the computer to let it know that the site is alive. A malicious hacker uses a botnet network (as they are called) to send thousands of pings a second, often overloading the server with requests. This usually causes the server to crash as it does not have the capability to handle the requests. Thus you have a DDoS attack.

DDOS means "distributed denial-of-service attack". It is a kind of attempt taken to make the system (computer) resources not available to its users.
