There's nothing to eat....

So the teenager has nothing to eat for lunch, nothing but turkey sandwiches. So I tell her I'm going grocery shopping tonight, what does she want?
"I don't know."
"How about some Lunchables?"
"Well then it's just pizza and turkey sandwiches. There's still nothing to eat."
"Well what do you want?"
"I don't know."
"Well then, you can come grocery shopping with me, and pick some things out."
"Grocery shopping is boring."
Guess what? The teenager is going shopping with me this evening whether she wants to or not. Then if there's "nothing to eat", it will be nobody's fault but her own!
But I'm not going to bet anybody that that will stop the complaining. Nope, I think it comes with the territory!

I am usually the one that complains there's nothing to eat.. and I am the one who does the grocery shopping. Because I'm on a budget I get basic essentials and figure I'll eat leftovers.. but then I never eat them. I just can't really afford to get myself the stuff I really want.. and I don't like to prepare the things I really want.

I eat leftovers regularly. Tonight I had a smoked pork chop in gravy, mashed potatoes and callaloo ( a veggie like spinach) My son had made a corn soup but I am not fond of corn. So I enjoyed my leftovers. Some leftovers actually taste better being leftover as it were. This especially applies to any kind of curries. Now I eat yellow rice as I add turmeric and this has been proven to prevent Alzheimer's so turmeric is added to all rice dishes - that is if I remember

Strange i still do that, Dawny.
Seems there are a few of us, whether teens or not who just cannot decide what we want to eat.
You should see the tantrums and faces this side of the world on those days when i decide to be that "i don't know" kind for a while.
It is fun you know.
TATA.

This is why I am not a mother . The moment she said I don't know to the simple question What do you want to eat , I wuld say well I can't get I don't know at the store ! So until you figure out what you want , You either have to starve or tell me What you want!I am not a mind reader! When I was a teen we had a set dinner I believe. I remember I loved whatever my mom made because she made Only What I loved.back then I was too busy with homework and practicing to moan about what eas for dinner.I don't remember if I went food shopping as a teen but I do remember the last years living with my mom, I Loved food shopping! And now It is Still fun! The hard part? Trying to figure out What I Want . So I can understand the dilemma! And I can understanding not having a answer for what for dinner. But to Not take time to think about it? That's lazy and Stupid. And I would call out anyone who does that! So I wouldn't be a good wife either. I Would say The same exact thing to a husband!

Lunch is different. Would you believe me if I told you from age 6 to 12 I had The same lunch Every school day? I had a tunafish sandwich! Every Day! Then When I was about 12-13 I went to school way early and My lunch was Early so I took some cheese and bread. Not a cheese sandwich but cheese ans bread and something sweet! Now I know the food Nazis would have said my body was in staving mode and that's why my shape is round! But That's what I had! So lunch is Far different. A trip to the store Is necessary! Good Luck.

What she's really saying is that there's nothing saying "Eat me!" to her.

I'll bet I'll be having that same conversation a few years down the line! My little one already wakes up starving and complaining she wants breakfast NOW. Well, I ask, what do you want? She says, I don't know. Then I tell her I'll get her some eggs and some toast. She yells, but I don't want eggs and toast. So I say, well then what do you want? Of course she says, I don't know. Sigh.

Oh sure, do you think I should make the salmon or the chicken for dinner tonight?

The complaining is basically a symptom, of being a teenager, I guess. Mine were not so hard to please. Good luck on shopping and have a wonderful time.

Oh Dawn,
That is so so typical. I spent a lot of money every week on "garbage" according to my girls when they were teens. If they went with me, we spent a lot of money on snacks and junk food. Even if I succeeded in buying all they wanted, well then it was my fault for letting them get flub even though they really had none. You are right, she will find something to complain about.

That too. They take turns giving us a hard time, don't they? Once the normally quiet and polite one was just complaining and going off about everything. I asked her,"What's up here? Does your sister need a break so you are filling in for her?" She actually said "yes".

Hey dawny! I have to say that this discussion definitely made
me smile! She reminded me of, well..me! I am always opening
up the refrigerator and thinking the very same thing...there's
nothing to eat even though there is a freezer full of food to
cook, cabinets fully loaded and well, ya know! So what should
I say? I'm the one that does most of the grocery shopping?

Yep, houseful of food, none of it is what I want, or it will take too long to prepare!

It's not that there's nothing to eat.. it's that there's nothing appetizing and nothing you feel like cooking. I know that feeling all too well. That's probably why I snack on cookies so much.. it's not that I really want the cookies, it's just that grabbing a few of them is easier than cooking some food just for myself.. and I can't afford to buy myself the stuff I would like to eat.

I get the same thing when I am making our evening meals. Everyone likes to complain about what is being fixed, yet they refuse to fix any meals themselves. I often ask them what they want for dinner and they always come up with the same thing. So...the fact that we eat the same things over and over is their fault and not mine.

Their fault and mine is how I look at it. I could still cook whatever I wanted. It's just that I hate to see food wasted...

Spending time in grocery shopping was boring when I was a teenager.
Now I think it is better to take her for shopping, so that she can pick what ever she like.

I try to, but they usually don't want to go. Apparently I must be psychic and know what they want.

I think you are right....when my oldest daughter moved out of the house to college I was telling her how much money it saved me now that she wasn't there....She said...I never ate there...I said...well you might have not sat at the table with us...but while you were on the phone you ate a bag of chips and a couple of hot dogs...I think when they are teens they do like to complain....or maybe they don't notice it. My little story probably isn't relevant but in a way your delimma reminded me of that little memory.

I think alot of times food actually tastes better the second time around. The flavors have had time to marinate and seem to become tastier. Grocery shopping is really interesting if you take it so. Reading those labels and checking for those nasty chemicals and such. Yes, it can be interesting. Hehehe

OMG!! That is all I hear at my house too. Of course I just went to the grocery store, the refrig. is full and so is the pantry, but of course, we will have nothing to eat. I don't understand, I find stuff to eat, my husband finds stuff to eat, my daughter finds stuff to eat...but the boys, oh no, there is nothing ever to eat.

I'd like to hope that she was able to find something that she likes to eat. That said, I also think that complaining about everything (even the food that they picked out themselves) is something that comes with the territory of being a teenager. I remember when I was about sixteen years old I used to go to the grocery store with my mother and I would pick out all kinds of things that I liked, but then the next day I would complain that there wasn't anything to eat in the house.

This discussion reminds me of my kids. Where after we have dinner, they would usually find their way to the cupboard and look around for sweet to eat. And of course if they don't find anything, they would complain that, there's nothing to eat.
But unlike yours, mine love going grocery shopping. So, they could get all the sweet stuff that they want.
