I never had this habit before. But now, it is difficult for me to stay awake as soon as I start reading. It does not matter what time of the day it is. It just happens without fail. I guess I am getting old. But I have noticed that many people, no matter what their age is, have this habit. Anybody here shares this strange habit with me?

I guess you are talking about text books which we use for serious studying at school or college. Most people too share your opinion. Sometimes I do get put off by looking at the thickness of the book. But I do love reading more than anything else. I think it is because of the imagination which you have to do and each character and stroy plays in your mind which keeps you concentrated.

Reader must use imagination in reading so that boredom will be avoided. Indeed reading merely words can fall you asleep. If that books doesnt have any drawings, pictures, or illustrative figures to shown then you wont last long....ShishiShishi! now to break that you must use your imagination to work with you as you read something if that certain book is purely text no illustrative figures to shown...then you must work with your imagination as you read it...so that your mind will divert and you wont fall asleep. That's the trick of it to avoid fall asleep as you start reading any books.

I do use imagination, limknodes. It is like whenever I start reading, the story is getting unfold with all the characters and the places inside my mind. But still, I do fall asleep. I think it is because I am overworked.

This thing only happens to me when i don't like the part of what i was reading is already boring and really feel tired to read. Other than that i don't feel sleepy reading. I make sure what i read is also of my interest and is a good book to read.

Interesting books keep us on the edge and wide awake, dont they? But I seem to have this problem only of late. And no matter what book I read, I simply doze off.

I guess I am not considered old. But still, I do feel tired and i guess that is the reason I am finding it very difficult to stay awake when I read.

Hi there! I love reading as a means of entertainment but there are also times when I must do some serious readings and whenever I am reading serious stuff hmmm like you I also start to go drowsy and sometimes I eventually sleep on it hehehe. Funny because when I'm reading pocketbooks I can even stay up all night and I'll get so hooked that i can't seem to put the book down until I finished reading it. The only problem I guess if we are reading something serious our minds get tired easily or maybe we lose interest in what we are reading or worse our energy are drained easily because of the seriousness of what we are reading. :D Have a good day and happy mylotting! :d

I loved reading before marriage and used to spend hours reading book after book. But after marriage and my kid, well, reading just five to six pages has become a great deal. I do glance through the newspaper though. All day through. I never used to find any book boring, be it text books which require serious reading or the other ones. But now, I guess either it is because of tiredness or lack of interest. Sometimes, when I read books which are very emotional, it drains the energy out of me and that makes me not want to touch such books again. Good day to you too.

I fall asleep pretty well anywhere and I don't need a book. But yes, reading does make me fall asleep. Years ago, before computers, I would read a few lines of my book and drop off to sleep...even if I woke again I would re-read the same lines numerous times. These days, i often fall asleep at the computer after being awake for only a short time.

Sorry for the late response. You are lucky to fall asleep anywhere. I fall asleep only while reading a book. I am pretty much awake when i am in front of the computer. But I do the same as you most of the time, reading, falling asleep and reading the same lines again.

Well, that is a good and effective way to fall asleep. Maybe we should recommend it to people who are finding it difficult to fall asleep everyday.

I guess I am too tired to read nowadays. I do fall asleep whenever I start reading. I do read story books along with my daughter at nights as well as afternoons, but only short ones. If I have a number of pages to read, it is a sure thing that I will fall asleep.

Haha, No worries my friend, we are sailing on the same boat. I have this book which becomes my sleeping pill whenever I feel like I wanted to sleep I just flip through few pages and walah ! I'm snoring in the next few seconds !haha . But then if I really love the book or I'm in climax, I'm always in a hurry to get through the last page.

I am concerned because I do not have that habit. I used to read anything and stay awake. But now, I am not able to finish even my favourite novels. I just come to know that I have been sleeping only after a few hours!

Hi devijay, I too read a lot both during the day when I find time and also at night before sleeping. I am wide awake during day and can read for hours if the book is interesting. However, during night , I am normally tired and sleepy but having developed the habit of reading before sleeping, I manage a few pages and within a matter of minutes I fall fast asleep - all the best and happy mylotting

I too have the habit of reading at least for five minutes before I go to sleep at nights. But since I am mostly very tired and exhausted, I feel so sleepy that I fall asleep immediately.

I agree to your experience of falling asleep the moment you start to read a book because I have experience it also. Maybe it is due to the fact that the eyes are overburdened or fatigue. I am also sure that age will matter. Young reader will have the longer endurance in reading while the older has the lesser capacity of the eyes. In my part, I used to read books when I cannot sleep at night and indeed it worked and helped me a lot. It was a costless sedative. However, great disciple is necessary to avoid sleeping the moment I am reading if there is an examination.
If in case there is an eye problem, medical consultation is advisable.

There is no eye problem ubermensch. Just age I guess and fatigue. Even now as I type this, my eyes are kind of drowsy. As I told earlier, I used to read a lot and now I find it difficult to retain my interest in the book for half an hour.

Listening to sad songs stirs up old memories in me and drains me emotionally. So I never do that at nights. Or any other time. . Yeah, reading nowadays does make me fall asleep. So I guess that might work. Thanks.

It always happens to me, better than any sleeping pill. It's just i get to read than i sleep, sitting, lying or standing. This usually happens when the persons has a mind mora active than normal, to whem to concentrate on one thing, the brain begins to relax. But sleep is a very good thing. Why do now what you can do tomorrow! ^^

You sleep standing? I just seem to doze off lying down and even if I am sitting, I would be lying down when I wake up. I did not used to have that habit. This is new to me that it feels so odd.

Nowadays, no matter what time of the day or night it is, I end up sleeping with the book not read even a little. Sigh!

Well it's happened but mostly I only notice when I wake up, as mostly when I start to feel my eyes closing I tend to put down the book and attempt to watch television or something else. I probably should read books before going to bed, as it helps with getting our brains to settle.
It's happened to me, I've never really considered it strange as I personally feel it's quite common. :)

I do consider it strange because all these years it has never happened to me and now for the past two years I do find myself dozing off whenever I pick up and start reading a book, no matter what time it is or what place it is.

I read for at least an hour almost every night before I go to bed. Reading relaxes me and helps me sleep, and I try to read stuff that can actually teach me something, so I like to think that I am bettering myself as I read.

Unlike me, you have a good habit I guess. I sometimes read murder mysteries which make me stay awake for hours together!

You are not alone in this situation. I do too and I would not accept that I am old hahaha.. I think it will always happen when the book you read is uninteresting. I have noticed myself when the book is so interesting to read I will not feel sleepy. I want to finish the book up to the end. Some people use reading as therapy for sleeplessness. Not sure why many people fall asleep while reading.

I used to be like that Bebs08. But now..... I guess we are all so tired that our minds stop working and everything comes to a stanstill and we fall asleep!

I find some books as sedatives LOL. The medical-surgical book that I have when I was in college is a good example of it :)

I guess that is the case with most of the people who have posted here. They all find serious study boring and would gladly fall asleep.
