Do you think it is possible to write/type like a man or a woman?

Not being sexist here, but I've noticed, when I interact with people on forums, I tend to have an idea of their gender in my head. Even if their gender is not displayed, and their name and avatar is blank or ambiguous (like a slogan or a cartoon)I am sometimes surprised when I find out what gender they actually are. This leads me to think that maybe there is something my brain thinks is "writing like a woman" for example, and I assume from the writing style that it is a woman, and I am surprised if I find out it is a man!
Does this happen to anyone else? Do you have any theories on what might make someone's writing sound "male" or "female"?

i came across with this feminist quotation once: there is no male or female mind... i forgot the rest. :) i'm not being hard core here but i believe her. some women tend to invest on a lot of appositives when they talk. so with gay people. get the picture?

Some people obviously feel like there is a female or male mind, because they feel like the gender of their mind doesn't match their body!

Ok, I have a couple of ideas about this topic because I think there is a lot of internet fraud surrounding this issue, where people pretend to be male of female, or an attractive figure in order to lure you into some kind of scheme/program. I think that the use of attractive females is an especially strong lure and tactic for scam artists. They will use sexually suggestive photos or attractive, young and usually white women to get attention and then try to write in a female voice but this is where the rubber meets the road and the tactic does not always work especially in live chat situations like Skype, where their language is too aggressive and sometimes obviously not American and usually too masculine and harsh.
We always hear of internet predators as individuals pretending to be someone else in order to lure children but I do think this is also happening in on-lite sites and programs that are promising to pay.
I do think there is a difference in the way that females and males chat/talk. There are mannerisms and language usage. One of the reason that on-line environments cause difficulties is because we are behind screens that cannot give us the clues that we would normally see in the off-line world. When people try to change gender or pretend gender, it is easier if they can just write and never interact, they may be able to pull it off, but in more interactive environments, the gender may be often revealed.
To your question, do we write in masculine or feminine ways? The answer would be yes, I think we do. I think we were designed that way. There is no gender called ambiguous, although many would like one.

Do you feel like the gender you are? I don't feel like my thoughts have any gender at all, most of the time. I don't automatically sympathize with women or female problems just because I have ovaries, and I can't even imagine what it would feel like to think "like a woman."

I suppose if a man did not have any responsibility, he would write like a woman and a woman had responsibility, she would write like a man. I know when you write fiction, you are supposed to get into the character's head to make people believe that the guy is a true man and not sensitive as most women are. That is to make sure that when a man reads the book, he thinks that in the circumstances, he would do exactly the same.
I do think that women are more likely to get flamed, and in that case, would write more precise like a man would write and have a more logical manner in order to protect themselves. Another thing is that men are taken more seriously, at least it was in my family. Now with me, it takes a lot to get me to write like a man. In my novel I am writing I had to change the way my hero was talking because my sensitive what would they think nature got in my way.
I do think it is possible, but it is not easy and the writer of the discussion has to do a lot of rerwrites to get him or her to sound like the opposite gender.

Oh, I think women always have responsibility. Even in traditional households, where women stay home, they have an important responsibility -- to keep the children safe and raise them well. But I can see what you mean, that if a woman took on a more "manly" role in life then her thoughts and writing would be more "masculine"

There was a study done that showed that men and women do write differently, like the poster above said. Apparently it was quite easy to tell when a woman writes things and when a man does, usually due to writing style and due to the words used. This however, differs by culture, as quite a few friends got the gender right, but there were also at least two others whose results were wrong.
The site mentioned by the previous poster should be this one, I think: http://bookblog.net/gender/genie.php

yes i know what you mean^^ if someone talks too sweet and with many smileys or type much and long sentences we think is a girl^^ but if types only a bit and almost no smileys we think is a guy ahah^^ thats normal that you think that way. but this really depends^^ in most part of times guys dont use many smileys but i guess it depends of the guy. some girls also dont use many smileys so^^ i dont know i guess that if the person doesnt have a pic or something is hard to know if is a guy or a girl. here in mylot also sometimes people answer my discussions and im not sure if is a boy or a girl^^ but if they always answer my discussions sure i already know^^ also sometimes for the nickname i can know if is a boy or a girl but for the way they type i dont^^

This would all have to depend on well you can write. if you try to put yourself into the mind of another person, i think it is possible to write like anyone even if you are of a different gender.

It's happened to me a lot of times - it's called stereotyping. I guess its easier to respond to a discussion when you at least know the gender. I actually like guessing a person's gender just to see if my observation skills are still sharp.

Hi Rebecca,
Strange is the fact that Internet allows anonymity and I hope you would agree with this. Many people I have known on the internet use fake names and that is quite common. Some rarer ones live out their fantasies changing their gender on the soclia networks... All of this to hide their identity. If you are aware, sites like Facebook(s) have caused many people to file divorce suits, thefts robberies and all of this just because of being honest on them. So people have a reason for hiding their true identities.
Now that said, it becomes quite difficult to identify who is the writer of the content. I admit that all of us have our own unique styles but on this Internet it is hard to tell. You are blessed if you can identify the gender of the person who posts just by reading the content and style of writing... It might work out when it comes to novels, screenplays and other non-online things but when on Internet... at least I am unable to identify the gender thing.
Cheers,
theSids.

Yes i think it possible to write as a man/woman but not express like them. Many people fake themselves as female on OMEGLE,orkut etc. Though i think male/female has their own type of style of wrting and expressing....
